There will be no Pokemon Gray

Ah, the soul crushing continues. A Spanish website interviewed folks from GameFreak at a *Pokemon Black* and *White* event in London. They asked the team if there would be a *Pokemon Gray* coming to the Nintendo 3DS, to which GameFreak replied: “Not at all. We finished this comes with Black and White version.” That’s not a perfect translation obviously, but as you can see via Google Translate, it’s quite apparent that this will be the first generation of the Pokemon series that won’t receive further editing in the form of a game like Yellow, Crystal, Emerald, or Platinum. But perhaps that means the Pokemon game in development for the 3DS will be a “real” Pokemon game?

**Update:** Nekki (in the comments below) has provided us with a better translation of the above quote, “With B&W, we have concluded this iteration.” We also have a similar translation from Luis: “We have finished this series with the Black and White version.”

Wow, you’re stupid. Of course there will be a third game, it just won’t have the name ‘Gr(a/e)y’. Which was already logical to begin with, as none of the other third games were ever a mixture of the previous two (i.e. Platinum isn’t a mixture of Pearl and Diamond, Emerald isn’t a mix of Ruby and Sapphire, etc.).

I can handle criticism, but I do dislike being misunderstood. I’m not trying to be a journalist. All I want to do is write about the Nintendo 3DS and report on the things I find interesting. GameFreak directly said they will not be working on this generation anymore. If they’re telling a lie, then so be it, but I can only report on what they’re saying and let people draw their own conclusions.

You know, if you’d actually read it, you’d know that they said, as Nekki translated, “Not at all. With B&W, we have concluded this iteration.” They didn’t say “There will be no Pokemon Grey”, or “We will not be calling it Pokemon Grey”. It’s pretty clear what he meant.

No iteration means version, or type of something. So Pokemon Pearl, Diamond, and Platinum are all one iteration. And I think this is for the next Pokemon game.

Sure they’ve occasionally made something neat in the 3rd iteration, but honestly, I find it kind of cheap when they do it. At least this shows they’ve made Black and White to the best of their ability rather than purposefully leaving stuff out to make a quick buck further down the road.

So yeah, if this means we’re one step closer to having a fully 3D Pokémon world (where you can, y’know, walk diagonally) I’m all for it.

It can mean 3 things. 1: Black and White is the last pokemon game (hope that’s not right). 2: Black and white is the final game for THIS generation (making 5th generation the shortest ever). and 3: There is still going to be 3rd generation remakes and the usual spin-offs.

I don’t think anyone realizes the position GameFreak is in. This is the first time they’ve released two Pokemon iterations for the same system. What this means is now that the DS is at the end of its supported lifecycle it’s unprofitable for GameFreak to make a third iteration; even adding 3D effects or whatever won’t net many sales as a DS game, even with 3DS funcionalities built in. And updating the graphics for a third version is just too much work and won’t have the high quality of a Pokemon game built ground up for the 3DS. It’ll just be a DS game with better graphics.

Also, they’re already working on 3DS and Wii Pokemon games. This means they hav a ton of development on their hands, as they’re developing for a new system and a current one. Not to mention they’ll have to drastically alter the games to fit the 3DS and/or Wii version, both feature-wise, graphics-wise, and gameplay-wise. I mean that Circle Pad has to be used for something!

The next pokemon for the 3DS will not be an entry in the series but a battle game, like pokemon colloseum or revolution. Pokemon can be beamed out of the AR Card already profided.

Hmm…this changes things up. Maybe the Pokemon game they have confirmed to be in development is 3rd gen remake? Seems kinda soon, though…
I just find it hard to believe that it’s the 6th gen seeing as 5th gen has been in production since 2006, and GameFreak didn’t get information about the 3DS until…early 2010, I believe?

Of course they won’t announce that a third version is coming. Black and White are not even released outside of japan yet, they don’t want to hurt the sale by saying that if you wait only a bit longer there’ll be a new improved version coming.. That’d be pretty stupid.

I think they are lying. They sell many copies with the third game of each generation and the development that game should be extremly cheap so I don’t find any reason to stop this tradition. Of course they have to say that there won’t be a new 5th generation pokemon game because if they say that, many 3DS users may wait until the new edition instead of buying black/white.

So, I’m sure we will se Pokemon Gray, a remake of the third generation of Pokemon (first gen remake was for GBA, second gen remake was for DS, so…) and a new or two new pokemon generations during all this years.

I’m having trouble believing the word of a Spanish website talking with a Japanese speaking company. There is just way too high a chance of miss-communication.
I have to keep telling myself this because I was so looking forward to seeing Kyurem on the cover of a game. Also, why would they make such an OBVIOUS counter-part legendary, if they weren’t going to make a third version?

1. They’re ending the generation early, so as to get a head start on the next Generation of Pokemon for the 3DS.
2. They’ve just fed us lies so we can buy Pokemon B&W, and THEN they’ll come out with Gray.
3. They’ve decided not to work on a third title so they can shift their attention to solely the new Pokemon games for 3DS and Wii.

In what can only be described as incredible, two Pokemon movies will be released this year on July 16th: Victini and the Dark Hero: Zekrom and Victini and the Light Hero: Reshiram; a small scan that leaked on the Internet of CoroCoro magazine has revealed the second title. No other details are known at this time other than there will be two, so we can only speculate what this means. Could there be one real movie with two versions, like with the video games? Could there be two actual movies? Could there be two shorter movies playing back-to-back? Either way, this is quite the development! It’s actually quite logical…

With Nintendo moving on to 3DS, new DS games are naturally starting to decrease (though, there are still some things!) — and that holds especially true for releases like Pokémon. It would be kinda soon for a third version to be released this year, and next year 3DS will be full-blown as a platform.

Porting BW on 3DS? No chance. I don’t think Game Freak would like to make a sloppy and quick-cash debut on the new system. I believe that they’d want a full-blown game to be released on it, and 2013 seems like a right date for Generation VI to come.

On the meantime, how great would it be for Game Freak to make a new non-Pokémon game?! Drill Dozer 2? Pulseman Returns? Heck, something completely new?! This would be very exciting, and would give them the chance to test 3DS so that Pokémon 3DS will be a real beyond-expectations game.

I wouldn’t be so sure about this. There is coding in the game that suggests a third iteration (eg Kyurem’s 2 exclusive Ice-type moves, Freeze Bolt and Cold Flare, that don’t appear in B/W at all) or at least /some/ kind of follow-up game.
I wouldn’t lose all hope just yet. Maybe they’re just deflecting attention of off a possible sequel because they don’t want it to overshadow Black and White’s release in western territories.

Dude, a Spanish guy released the Japanese names of all the new pokemon several weeks before the game released in Japan. Anything can happen. Plus I played the Japanese version of White on my DS lite and it would be tough to add anything to that game besides a small graphics boost. It’s very well put together.

A higher resolution doesn’t necessarily mean better graphics. For example, You can play a Gamecube and a PS3 on an sd tv running at 640×480 pixels, but do they look the same? No. The PS3 has much better graphics. What makes graphics is a processor in the machine. This processor makes all the textures and models in a game. The one in the 3ds is much more powerful than the psp, meaning the 3ds is capable of much better graphics. You get it?

I think he was saying that cos people assume that “Grey” is the next game… I really don’t agree, I think its more likely to be Pokemon Chrome Version and people asked if it will be on 3DS, which he could have just been directly referring too. IF there IS a third game, I think it would be on DS still and then have Generation 3 on 3DS, much like Generation 1 was remade on Advance before the next gen.
