There is a new 2D Mario game coming to the 3DS

Satoru Iwata has shared the following announcement in a recent investor meeting:

Although there is no logo here, we are planning to release a totally new side-scrolling action Super Mario in 2D as a key title for the Nintendo 3DS in the next fiscal year.

This means it will launch on the 3DS between the end of March 2012 and the end of March 2013.

      It’s not. They already have a logo for that, and Paper Mario isn’t the same as side scrolling Mario.

      I’d rather have a 3D Mario game. I don’t count Mario 3D Land, because of the severe linearity.

      I think what he means, is that it will be a Side-Scroller, like Mighty Switch Force, but with Full 3DS Graphics like Super Mario 3D Land, but you view from the side like Mutant Mudds.

      Think of it, like if it was Cave Story 3D.

      That’s how this New Mario Game, will be like.

      So it will still be a 3D World.

      You will just play the game like Cave Story 3D.

      @Kaizar I doubt it, because even the new installment of NSMB on WiiU looks to be in the same style as the Wii & DS versions.

      I’d rather have other games besides Mario, and I know we’ve been getting a lot of that, but I want more. Pikmin 3D, F-Zero, New Star Fox, Wario, etc.

      Paper Mario issint a side scrolling game because it has depth if a game has depth it’s not side scrolling next we will learn why things smell like cherries you are dismissed

      And I personally can’t wait for the New Star Fox.

      Which is obvious that they are working on the basis of a New Star Fox, because the game is like if it was made for the 3DS.

      I know right! Game developers just don’t seem understand that thier fans have been wanting a real 3d Mario game that plays like real 3d Mario game.

      I like the idea Johnathan Metts from Nintendo World Report put forward about any further 3D Mario games: Use them as an excuse to build an entire world.

      Rather than the start-to-finish design of a classically-inspired Mario game (which is also great), future 3D Mario games should expand on the kind of exploration Banjo-Kazooie touched on. In fact, it might be a good idea to use the passage system between worlds we saw in Banjo-Tooie (which might have also been nice for Skyward Sword).

      With the Observatory set as an example of what not to do, if Nintendo set their minds to it they could design areas as well crafted as Peach’s Castle with the right amount of surprises Delfino Plaza is known for (not the amount it had, though).

      Side scrolling means 2D, yes. but I wouldn’t be surprised if they implemented something different to take advantage of the 3D effect.

    we need mario party 3d but it needs to play like the console ones not like mario party advance (I hated that game and I never played mario party ds so i don’t know if it was good)

      Actually the Mario Party announced back then was 9 for the Wii. They just worded the article wrong so it sounded like it was going to be a 3DS game.

      And by “they” I don’t mean the people running this site, I mean the people who wrote the article that later appeared on this site as a reference to the error.

    What I’d like to see would be kinda like super mario world on snes. Not with timed levels, but full environments like mario 64. It’d be awesome to bring the cape to action in 3D!

      If it did come down to that, I’d really hope they’d introduce some kind of level designer with Spotpass and Streetpass functionality.

    Make a game thats just as 3D as super mario 64, super mario galaxy, etc. Thats what i want. Though 2d marios are still fun… And the hybrid known as super mario 3d land was also fun… But still… i want a fully 3d mario game for the 3ds.

      They will make such a Mario Game, but first they want to start off with more basic kinds os Mario Platformers.

      And they will also Remake Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 for the 3DD.

      And they are considering Super Mario Sunshine remake for the 3DS.

      And if we’re lucky, maybe a Sequel to Super Mario Sunshine.

      I have also heard of a Sequel to Majora’s Mask coming to the 3DS.

      Source? Majora’s Mask remake is the only valid thing in that post. I doubt Nintendo would load the 3DS with that many ports, especially given that the 3DS already has an abnormal amount of legacy ports for it’s age already.

      David posted earlier in this site, when he talked a out Nintendo considering remaking Super Mario Sunshine.

      Nintendo said that they are going to remake Suoer Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 for the 3DS, but they don’t want the release date to be too close to when the Wii Versions came out, so for right now Nintendo is considering if they should also remake Super Mario Sunshine for the 3DS also.

    To me, the recent side-scrolling Mario games work better on handhelds than they do on home consoles. I don’t know why, I loved NSMB on the DS, but the Wii one bored me :/ I traded it in towards my pre-order of Luigi’s Mansion 2.

    Wow, that was fast. Not even three months after the first 3DS Mario game got released, Nintendo announces another! Impressive. I enjoy 2D Mario better than 3D Mario, so since I got 3D Land, I’m getting this game no matter what.

    I hope this new 2D Mario game has unique environments. I kind of want the game to have a theme like how Super Mario World had a dinosaur theme and Super Mario Sunshine had a tropical theme. I like how Donkey Kong Country 2 had a pirate theme and I like how interesting all the worlds are in the whole DKC trilogy. They should also add some content from Super Mario Land and Super Mario Bros. 2 like vehicle levels and being able to pick up vegetables and certain enemies and use them as projectiles. Also because Nintendo brought Boom Boom and The Koopa Kids, maybe they could bring Reznor back in this game

    Am I the only one that, despite loving the 3D and 3DLand type Mario games, still loves the 2D games? I am all for a 2D Mario game, and knowing that there’ll be one before March 2013 is gobsmackingly awesome. That might even mean November this year, in time for Chrissus again. (Chrissus = my awesome way of spelling Christmas, incorporating Christ, mass, and Jesus into the one word.)

    How sweet would it be if they made Super Wario Bros.? You play as Wario and Waluigi and it is set in a darker environment. Kinda like Wario World.

    I hope it will also make good use of 3d while not being a mixture of the two. I loved 3d land and feel that game was misunderstood by some, but at the same time, i hope nintendo will keep making seperate 3d and 2d mario games.

      You can take a 2D game and literally stick it in 3D and suddenly it’s a completely different beast. Super Mario 3D Land was different, not better, than 2D mario games. A lot of the non-core 2D mario players flat out ignored 3D land.

    Well this is nothing new. Miyamoto actually stated waaaayyyy back that he was (planning on?) doing two Mario games, one 3D and one 2D. The 3D one is obviously SM3DL if you didn’t catch that.

    It can’t be a new NSMB game because he said “we are planning to release a TOTALLY NEW”
    and the NSMB games have the same art style and concept and will probably stay that way.

    But they can make a new Super Mario World
    because… Yoshi’s Island, while still part of the SMW series, it was a totally new game.

    If it is a SMW game it would be the third in the series.
