(This article is *not* hating on the NIntendo 3DS. This article is about shining the light on its shortcomings. Endless praise never did anyone any good!)

There are a lot of things about the Nintendo 3DS that will suck. I think the 3DS will be a great device in general (why else would I have started this site?) but I’ve been burned by high expectations before and don’t want that to happen again. But if we examine *why* the Nintendo 3DS sucks, perhaps we can keep our unreasonably over-blown illusions about its brilliance under control.

It starts with the games. There’s a lot of good titles announced for the 3DS already, but it’s not all sunshine and lollipops as people (including myself at times) would have you believe.

Remakes and ports are, of course, the primary fodder during the launch period. It’s always a risk for developers to create gams for new platforms, meaning most will err on the side of caution and simply re-release already successful titles.

This is not a new phenomenon, but it makes me wonder: **what if all developers have to do is 3D-ify their old creations to get sales?** The casual market isn’t as discerning as the core market and I worry that the ailment of remake and port-itis could extended far beyond a reasonable time frame.

It doesn’t help that Kid Icarus: Uprising [may not be a launch title](http://nintendo3dsblog.com/kid-icarus-uprising-details-paper-mario-3ds-screens-and-luigis-mansion-sequel) and even the Ocarina of Time remake is [only in the planning stages](http://nintendo3dsblog.com/ocarina-of-time-3ds-is-only-in-the-planning-stages). What appeared to be the holy grail of launch line-ups could be far more anaemic than we’d anticipated.

But that’s not the worst of it. Shovel-ware has always been a huge problem in the game industry, but seemingly the most prevalent on Nintendo hardware and it’s back with a vengeance. And, as I discussed in [Episode #32](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=938XN0mfMrI), it does a lot more than merely steal your hard-earned money.

The success of shovel-ware lies in marketing. Naïve children and unassuming parents are swayed by the fancy graphics and exaggerated features that plaster the box. This is where soul-less developers will gladly swoop in and cause a ruckus in the form of low-quality games.

Think about this for a second. **What could be more attractive to this unfortunately uninformed audience than claims of 3D effects that cause objects to fly out at you?** It’s a great selling point, but most people will wrongly assume this will be an enjoyable implementation of 3D effects. But, as Masahario Sakurai – the game designer behind Kid Icarus: Uprising – points out:

> …when you have a lot of objects flying towards the user I find that it’s more likely to cause eye strain so during development I’m using objects moving away from the user which doesn’t have that effect. ([Source](http://nintendo3dsblog.com/masahiro-sakurai-on-how-to-avoid-eye-strain-with-the-3ds))

So yeah, the pop-out style of 3D leads to headaches and eye fatigue, while a sense of depth and volume (like you would’ve seen in *Avatar*) is no where near as painful. Of course, the latter doesn’t sell as well.

What this all means though is that people who hand over their cash for sholel-ware won’t only be paying $30 for a lousy game, **they’ll be paying $30 for a lousy game that causes physical pain**. It’s this type of bad karma that could slice and dice the amount of games parents choose to buy for their children (and Nintendo consoles aren’t exactly known for their stunning attach-rates at the moment either).

Taking a broader view at the underlying technologies available on the 3DS reveals deficiencies that will be passed on to us. Leading the pack in this regard is the bittersweet mistress of choice.

Choice is a [killer of creativity](http://gettingreal.37signals.com/ch03_Embrace_Constraints.php) and yet developers have a huge laundry list of choices and decisions to make when creating games for the 3DS. Do we include motion controls? How should we use the 3D effect? What should the touch screen be used for? And these are very high-level choices too; when you dig down, each path reveals hundreds of new decisions that need to be made.

This lack of constraint during the development process will lead to game designers making poor judgment calls including:

* Supporting *all* of the 3DS’s features, even if the support is poorly executed or unnecessary.
* Taking the gimmicky approach such as having 3D objects flying out at you. This ties back in with the “looks good on the box” syndrome present with shovel-ware.
* Delaying game released to the point of irrelevance or releasing products in an unfinished state because of the inability to prioritise and juggle the various forks during development.

Not every developer will face these issues – as a whole they are quite adaptable to new technologies, but I still get the sense of the 3DS’s gift being its curse. Sure, it can do a lot and is really powerful, but **will developers be able to handle that responsibility?** Many can’t even master the touch screen controls on the Nintendo DS – are they ready for a whole new bucket-load of game design rabbit holes?

Perhaps these arguments are unfair though. They do focus on actions not completely under Nintendo’s control after all. That being the case, lets cherry pick what could be the Nintendo 3DS’s most glaring weakness that Nintendo is solely responsible for: online multiplayer gaming.

I see-saw back and forth between optimism and apathy when thinking about Nintendo’s internet-centric future. With that in mind, I’ll kick off with some pessimistic predictions and perhaps move towards a few brighter outlooks.

At a very high-level I predict that Nintendo will:

* Choose to keep the friend codes system.
* Disappoint us with their “innovation” (and then try to justify it)
* Expect developers to handle multiplayer gaming relatively independently (rather than supporting them with an integrated system).

Like I said, my faith in Nintendo’s online plans waivers to and fro. On one hand we’ve got Reggie Fils-Aime, the President of Nintendo of America saying there’ll be ["significant" changes in this space](http://nintendo3dsblog.com/significant-changes-coming-to-nintendos-online-system-with-the-launch-of-the-3ds), but that’s coming from the fella who tried (and failed) to convince E3 attendees a few years back that trading Pokémon over Wi-Fi connections was an adequate substitute for the lack of an Xbox Live-like system. I’m wary of giving Reggie – or anyone at Nintendo for that matter – the benefit of the doubt in this situation.

Is there hope? Sure, there’s always hope. The team at Nintendo *do* seem especially keen to correct their shortcomings this generation, but it may just be too little too late.

I don’t want to dash your dreams of the Nintendo 3DS being awesome. I do think it will be fantastic, but it will undoubtably face its own set of struggles that I think are better to blow out into the open before our expectations sore past any possible reality.

What do you think? **What aspects of the Nintendo 3DS will suck?**

because of this post, i will no longer be reading this blog.

    bye.

    1. David Turnbull

I’m very sorry to hear that. I have a feeling you won’t end up reading this comment, but could you clarify what you didn’t like about this post? I’m not actually saying the Nintendo 3DS will be bad…the exact reason I started this site was because I feel it will be brilliant. But I also don’t want to endlessly shower it in praise. This was necessary to shine some light on its shortcomings.

    2. Hardcore_Sadism

      RTFA, dude.

      Shut up and RTFA.

    3. sos

oh nooo, what ever will we do?

    4. Roy

      woah, David, you’ve upset him.
Personally I think it’s good that you talk about the bad features, that way we won’t be let down by anything, in fact maybe pleasantly surprised.
For example, you don’t tell an astronaut that his suit is the best ever, and so he decides to go on a spacewalk too near the sun and… i know it’s a wierd metaphor but his spacesuit could be revolutionary, but he needs to be informed of the problems, or he’ll think it’s a little too good.

    5. bye Me, personally I liked it, it’s good to be aware of all the down sides of the system to avoid disappointment when it launches, while all I have been thinking about have been nothing but good. Thanks David

  2. Hammad Ahmad Khan

My only qualm with the 3DS is that the two screens are different sizes and aspect ratios. This will undoubtedly lessen the amount of DS-type games that use both screens in unison like The World Ends With You and Mario & Lugi: Bowser’s Inside Story. We’ll see more traditional games which use only one screen. As I recall, this is the fundamental problem with the PSP in that it tries to be too much like its console counterparts. I feel tha thandheld platforms need innovation to survive and with the 3DS, Nintendo are moving away from innovation in software by making it harder for developers to use both screens in sync. I also don’t like the fact that the touch screen has been merely relegated to act as a control pad and the emphasis is no longer on it.

    1. David Turnbull

Yeah, that’s definitely a fair criticism I’d say, and one I’ve heard from quite a few people. This sort of ties back into my point about choice, but from a different angle. There’s just so much to the 3DS a lot of what made the DS innovative in the first place sort of loses importance. The 3D technology is brilliant, but it seems like everything else could be seen as secondary.

    2. Roy

That’s a good point Hammad. I mean look at spirit tracks, it uses the touch screen but as developers will want the 3d visuals, that control method with the charactor on the bottom screen won’t be used anymore. of course it’s easy to just put your guy on the top screen, but yeah, it does mean less innovation in the controls area.
with the new gyroscope and 3d screen this could of course open up new areas of innovation that werent possible on the normal ds. so it’s a fair exchange i think.

  3. Jem

My only complaints are that : There is not dual analog or a substitute thereof for left handed players eg. a button swap (with the slide pad and d-pad on the right and buttons on the left)
The screen requires a sweet spot which limits the amount of creativity for developers eg. no book style, and as you said they aren’t pushing the online features. I also think they could ditch the motion controls for something better.

  4. GAMERGOD-PHD

the day nintendo has xbox live like set up is the day i stop playing nintendo…shovel-ware is a industry issue a issue with human beings not the 3DS…..hardlycore mentality is destroying gaming /3DS-Wii ARE GAMINGS SAVIORS…3rd partys are a industry issue not a nintendo issue…..and a broad range of games a games machine it makes just shooters = a consoles doom COUGH XBOX 4 BILLION LOSS COUGH X360 5 BILLION LOSS COUGH PS3 6 BILLION LOSS

    case rested!!!!

    1. David Turnbull

Side note: If you use a real email address it’s much less likely your comment will get caught in spam filters.

      In regards to your argument:

      1. Shovel-ware is an industry issue, but shovel-ware inherently is more successful on Nintendo consoles because of the audience, and therefore there tends to be a higher ratio and quantity of low quality games coming from 3rd parties.
      2. Xbox 360 has a much broader range of high quality games than the Wii. I’m not hating on Nintendo, but that’s just a fact.
  5. Viggie24

I find it very unlikely that Nintendo would keep friend codes, especially after all the heat they received from it and after all their promises to make significant changes to their online system. To say you just don’t believe Nintendo even after they told you change was coming is premature. Why wouldn’t Nintendo capitalize on online services? They wouldn’t have a reason for changing a system thats already broken.

3D remakes will most likely not flood the market. If anything, it will follow in a similar fashion to the Wii’s “New Play Control” series. You should know this any better than anyone else. Aren’t you the one saying that all these developers are excited to develop for this system? A system dominated by remakes doesn’t make sense to me.

However, you are right in terms of shovel-ware. Obviously, that is inevitable.

    1. Viggie24

Aha…I fucked up a bit. I meant to say “They would have every reason for changing a system thats already broken”. But you get the point

    2. meizme

I think that Nintendo is very good at finding a completely different way of doing things and still having it rock, so 3DSlive isn’t likely, they might go for Some hybrid android market + Steam combo (which i think is the best and most impressive setup on the planet) the Steam system of being able to redownload any purchased game as a form of backup, with your saved games and configuration settings backed up as a bonus is just incredible. An i have iphones and droids, i like the droid policy way better that apples appstore, again for the once you bought it its yours, not the buy it again to get it again policy.

For the remakes, I am a HARDCORE retro gamer; let me elaborate… i have the entire metroid, final fantasy and zeldas series for GB,NES, and SNES games for my iphone, psp, nes, gb, snes, Wii, pc, DS,and Pandora systems, all dumped from my original carts, or bought on the wii shop channel, at any given time i can have 5 separate progress states for super metroid alone across 5 platforms. The old side scroller games are the pinnacle of gaming. look at all the new games; metroid other M, donkey kong country returns, and new super mario brothers wii, nba jam, and sonic 4 and for the xbox360 LIMBO, and shank, and bionic commando rearmed.
I’m pretty sure the remake and sidescrolling market are the new old FREAKING HOTNESS!!! and nintendo will milk it till there is powdered milk puffing out those utters.

The issue I’m concerned with is nausea… I wear glasses and there are some games that I can’t play because they make me want to throw up… I loved Spyro on the PS1 but 10 mins into the game and it made me nauseas. Same is the case with Doom, Quake and Duke Nukem… Love them but could never play them… The DS rarely ever affected me (Exceptions: Moon, Dementium and sometimes Call of Duty) and although I am SUPER excited about the 3DS, Im afraid that I may have to play with the 3D off…

I wouldn’t really mind ports because I missed the whole N64/Gamecube era and sadly the WII era too (Can’t afford it :( )

  8. Kilano

the only fear i have is shovel ware…

David, dou you remember the times [or heard of it] nintendo used his approval sign
on games [it was not all shiny buta lot easier to find the good games amongst the crappy ones]

i dont fear remakes, not even too much of them, im not that old of a gamer "2x"
but if i talk with emotions and shiny eyes about super nintendo rpg
s [like terranigma, final fantasy 6,secret of evermore and others] most of the younger gamer or
gamer who started with hd-console only talk about old and poor graphics.

there are tons of potencial new good amazing ideas, but like real books
if you don’t Re-Release the tons of awesome old stuff….it would cause some of the best
story’s in gaming history to disappear and in the worst case only
cheap and lazy clones of the past-glory will remain.

even if they transform the 2d nostalgica in good 3D, i don`t ever want that gamer of the future can#t enjoy a ff6, a grandia or something else that the graphic-wall for younger gamers will block.

i hate it that some hardcore nerds are offended with 3d remakes from 8-16 bit games,
they may love it like they are, but that’s no selling point in the present or future for new generations [8-bit and 16-bit will never die, as long our parents and our generation are alive, but in 100 years, there will be no one alive who really knowed the feeling to buy a brand-new supe rnintendo or megadrive cartridge...maybe 8-16 bit will be liked in small parts, but not in thze same scale]

final fantasy 4 was and is an awesome game, but even with the SD-Japan styled NDS Remake [SD = Super Deformed] it was so much better, the voice acting was stunning, the music epic and the whole 1:1 remake of the oldschool gae + good extras and bonuse….yeah NDS Final Fantasy 4 was a lovesong from square-enix to the old fans
and a expierience for new fans.

  9. NOTHING. THE 3DS IS GOD.

i hope you know that the 3ds has a depth slider which changes the 3-d to complete 2-d so before you start saying that it causes pain you can quit whining and turn your 3-D off and if you think that the 3 DS is gonna just come out with remakes of course not there’s only two that have been announced: LOZ OOT 3D, and star fox 64 3D, the rest is just sequels or new games. There are some things i guess you can agree with but maybe the title is little misleading you should maybe just put something a bit less intimidating to other people’s opinions.

    Extremely pessimistic lol
I don’t agree on anything but what you said about developers not been able to handle the choice of what to do with the touch screen combined with the 3D effect….
I totally agree there will be a lot of sucking games like there have always been, and it’s because of mediocre people making them. But on the other hand there are really good games, like there have been on the DS…
My point is that it will be inevitable….. But it will be inevitable that there will be nice and cool games too….

I skimmed through the post. Interesting enough I have my doubts too. Thank you David for putting this out in the open for us to ponder.

@Me- there may not always be appraisal but I’m sure the 3DS will be awesome. I complain sometimes about the DSi but none-the-less it is a grand to have and to fully invest in all of its features. I’m unsure about the 3D effect of the 3DS upon some aspects. I am sure it will work out well, but I wonder if switching view between the touch screen and 3D screen has a terminal conflict with the sweetspot.

  15. Mario

What a stupid post. “$30 for physical pain”

Really? That sentence in and of itself just boasts the stupidity your brain is capable of making. I was hoping to like this blog, but because of this post, this one post, you’ll never see me (and none of my friends, I’ll be sure to make them steer clear of this) again. This post sucks, making the rest of the site garbage. Good job!

I just played it and I think it sucks! The 3d often looks blurry and you have to have it positioned a certain way for it to work. Not only that but it doesnt look like anything is “coming at you”. In fact it looks like your looking into a tunnel or something. If you minus the 3d aspect of it I think that the graphics arent much better than the regular ds and they are worse than the wii. That mean the onyl thing (basically) thats new about this console is the 3d (which isnt that impressive to me anyway)
