Planning to wait around for a Nintendo 3DS Lite? Your waiting may be in vain. Kenichi Sugino, the Nintendo 3DS hardware designer has quite clearly stated that “we don’t have any short-term plans for creating a more compact version of Nintendo 3DS like we did with Nintendo DS Lite.” Satoru Iwata, the President of Nintendo of Japan backed up this statement by saying that “we used all our tricks for Nintendo DS Lite – and more – for cutting down on size right from the start.” Maybe a 3DS XL is more likely?

the 3ds seems like they put all the good parts of the former ds-es into it. so if there were to be a next generation of the 3ds it would have to be something little, like a bigger screen, or two analog sticks instead of one. it seems like nintendo really wanted the current 3ds to be the best it could be at this time.

  2. Crillan

Suits me just fine. I really like the look and size of the 3DS. Preordered!

  3. Exlon

I wouldn’t mind a slicker or smoother form (I still think the 3DS looks a little clunky). But otherwise, form factor is pretty much it for me.

    1. Knuckles

You do know the 3ds is only slightly bigger than the ds Lite right?

  4. shockwave

What is possible to upgrade the 3ds without making it a whole new system really? (Like DS to DS lite, DS to 3DS is a new system) Everything’s been done? What is there? 3DSiPhone? 3DS aqua, a 3DS you can play underwater?

But seriously, can anyone reply with a real idea other then lite or XL of what may happen? I’d really like to know.

    1. David Turnbull

Two front-facing cameras. 3G connectivity. Bigger display. Larger battery.

    2. Esposch

Possibly a future one with a larger inbuilt NAND and a wider viewing angle or a second cartridge slot and bigger screens or something. They could shrink the technology in several year’s time, too. Who knows what could happen.

I hope they dont make anymore 3ds types. Really pissed me off when they made dsi. Id be fine if its just like a 3ds XL or whatever but if they add different features it would be a total rip off to people who have the original 3ds. They’re probably gonna release a new 3ds around the release of the “ngp” psp

  6. Lizzie1238

Really a 3DS XL? The dsi XL was the dumbest idea ever.

    1. macz

The DSi XL actually was a pretty overlooked, but good idea by Nintendo.

It catered towards older audiences, and I know quite a few people who upgraded to the XL for size (like my dad)

    2. dadesilaeoneBez

it only sounded dumd cuz they annouced te 3ds lie 2 months later

  7. Tayo

I wish I could really get it into peoples’ minds that the 3DS isn’t just a DS. I mean it in the sense that’s not just part of DS generation. I mean, it’s next generation handheld gaming. Seriously, all the DS upgrades can play DS games, and any 3DS upgrades will play 3DS games. The 3DS is backwards with the last generation of games, which were DS games, just as the DS was with the Gameboy Advance games, and Gameboy Advance with Gameboy games.

    1. ethan

yes i think that calling it a nintendo 3ds was a mistake on nintendos part i mean i can imagine people saying ” huh 3ds dont i already have one of those?” they should have called it nintendo 3d or something

  8. malikds

sumthing nintendo shud add to there up coming app list/e-shop is skype if uv heard of ,or used skype u’ll agree

    1. JD2995

yep, I also want skype on the 3DS

    2. STEELFLEX

      That would be awesome!

    3. Reese

iv’e been saying add a skype app from the beginning, man that will boost the sales of 3DS, skype app, facebook app, & twitter app

  9. DryYoshi

Size is good enough, and XL is clumsy.

  11. Some Guy

Does Iwata’s quote imply that for the DS phat they didn’t use all their tricks? Did their trick budget run out or something on that one?
It’s probably going to be some sort of hardware design improving due to new tech of some sort-my hope is better batteries.

  12. Mr.Guy

I would compare this with HeartGold and SoulSilver. (although not a fair comparison since theyre games not systems.) Almost every other generation of two pokemon games has had a third come out a few months later that just improves on everything. But with HeartGold and SoulSilver, they added so much stuff that making a third version would be pointless. Theyve done all they could.

  13. macz

I thinks it is inevitable that they will release a smaller Lite version of the 3DS in the future, but just not in the next year or 2. Because they will need either a new 3DS upgrade or a new Wii to continue sales and profits, but can’t release a brand new handheld.

  14. Miles

Do you think theres any chance that the 3DS will have a price drop before a 3DSXL or w/e the update will be called comes out?

  15. Carsten

Well, the Lite version of the DS is not cool because of the reduced size, its cool because it has got a slick design over all. And the 3DS hasnt got that.

  16. Charlie

You shouldn’t cpunt on that being true though. Seeing that they would cash in some extra if people bought both the original and then an upgraded version.

  17. Adrián

Well, i am sure that they will make a few new models in future. I just hope their improvements to be as innovators as color was to gameboy color, and not just change their color or size.

The fact that this was even brought up tells me that, without a doubt, there are plans for an updated 3DS already in the works. As long as it doesn’t come prior to the Holiday Season of 2011, I am a happy camper!

  20. McCool

people can finally stop complaining about gettting an upgraded 3DS system.

I’ll be waiting for the 3ds Xl

  23. No 3DS Lite? Whew, now I can get the 3DS with no worries. And if Nintendo goes back on their word, I’ll just trade in my 3DS for this new alliteration. Simple as that.

  24. Flip

    That’s beacuse they’re planning 3DS Diet

Could you please make a video about applications that will be available in the future from the eshop?
