There’s an annoying glitch on the Maka Wuhu track in Mario Kart 7 that gives devious players a hugely unfair advantage. A new firmware upgrade, however, will allow games on the 3DS to be patched via the eShop. This upgrade is arriving on April 25th in North America, and the patch itself will arrive in May.

  • Sonic says

Don’t you mean update instead of upgrade.

    • skywake

Well pdate is more or less a shortened version of the phrase ‘up to date’ so the emphasis is on *newer* information or whatever so, in that sense, it is an update. Upgrade however implies that one thing is being replaced by a better thing. The thing doesn’t have to be newer or the most recent but it often is.

If you were moved from economy class to buisness class that would be an upgrade but not an update. If you were briefed on the newest information, like in this blog posting, you’d call that an update but not an upgrade. A software patch can be both so… no need to be pedantic about which is used. ;)

    • Ty

It’s actually called a patch if it is used to fix a bug in the game. It’s called an update if something is being improved upon, and an upgrade if there is a significant difference between it and the previous version.

    • skywake

@Ty I’d call it a patch but it could equally be called an update or upgrade. Also I don’t think update requires it to be an improvement given I could update you with some horrible news or install a software update that breaks something….

but really this is a patch, an update AND an upgrade because they more or less mean the same thing.

    • tnt175

They only need to do the fix for the glitch of Wuhu Island now

  • Outlaw

    Finally…

    • http://www.youtube.com/ZeAllMighty1 ZeAllMighty1

ikr now i wont have to turn off my 3ds when that track gets chosen.

    • stephen

its f***ing anoying when some kids spam the track all the time

    • Belinni

The last time I played online was during launch week before people figured out this glitch. Maybe now I can finally play some online in peace!

    • tnt175

Unbelievable to say, but one time Maka Wuhu was selected and out of the 7 racers, NO one even tried it. I was like :O

    • Glenn

Wouldn’t it be funny if, when Nintendo patched it, you were playing with a friend (not online, just a 1-on-1 between friends) you’d say, “REMEMBER THE MAKA WUHU GLITCH!” and they’d just fall to their deaths?

  • Han Solo

Nintendo has been awesome lately… too awesome…

    • John Morrison WWE

Daniel Bryan sucks, go John Morrison!!!

    • Steve Austin

      What?

  • millsy

    YAY.

  • Franz

and if they offer an optional patch? (not obligatory)

    • mah boi

Chances are that the game must be updated before they can play online again.

    • http://www.gamesradar.com GameManiac

      Seems legit.

I recall a system update occurred with Super Mario 3D Land (I think).

    • http://images.wikia.com/croc/images/d/d5/Croc!.jpeg Mr Rex

I’m guessing you need to patch to play online from that day forward! If you trying playing without the patch maybe an error could occur?! Thats just my Idea of how it might work!

    • Zeem

In the actual Nintendo Direct EU presentation, they specifically told us the patch will be required to play online. =)

    • Derrick

      @Zeem

Yes, here’s a more specific answer:

THE PATCH IS NOT OPTIONAL! WHY DOES EVERYONE KEEP SAYING THAT?

According to the European Nintendo Direct presentation at http://www.nintendo.co.uk/NOE/en_GB/news/nintendo_direct_47764.html on the 29:47 mark, they state that you will be REQUIRED to download the patch from the Nintendo eShop in order to play Mario Kart 7.

  • G.M.M.

I remember before they said they wouldn’t be able to update this… well, at least it can be fixed now! Can’t wait for this and an easier way to organize my apps :D

  • Connor Russell

Huzzah! Now my VS. points won’t drastically decrease. I couldn’t even do it myself!

  • Jonathan

Glad to hear this issue will be fixed and that future games with this problem can finally receive patches as well!

Not having the ability to patch games on past systems has seriously ruined the game experience of some serious blockbuster titles such as Metroid: Other M (door glitch), The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword (lightning dragon game-breaker), and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (*raises fist* Water Temple) most notably.

However, I have gotta say this:

    If we are already getting:
    Mario Tennis Open,
    Animal Crossing,
    Luigi’s Mansion 2,
    Paper Mario,
    Fire Emblem: Awakening,
    and
New Super Mario Bros. 2 announced for release sometime this year or early next, then we all have to wonder just what in the world Nintendo must truly have its sleeve for the Nintendo 3DS at E3 2012 even more now.

Oh, please…please don’t let Nintendo forget this year marks Metroid’s 25th Anniversary (August 1987 it was released in North America) as well as the Prime series’ 10th Anniversary (November 2002 in North America). :(

They do go by North America release dates, so I hope they keep true to this and dish this surprise out at E3 2012 this year. A Kirby Wii U game would be stellar too!

    • Jonathan

      Oh, and don’t forget.

The games I mentioned in my list are only for Nintendo 3DS. That’s not even touching the Wii’s stellar lineup of games in comparison to last year, or the Nintendo DS’ upcoming Pokemon Black & White 2, and not even touching the Wii U’s upcoming titles as well. Heck, we don’t even know a thing about the final product design of the Wii U yet!

      I’ve called it…Nintendo will dominate at E3 2012.

    • the psvita is better

      yeah i agree with you
i think we wont get many surprises for 3ds
but the wii u is gonna have many announcements and games revealed

    • Matthew

Wow, you didn’t troll about the Vita. Nice.

    • KING Z

@the psvita is better, im pretty sure there will be alot of surprises for the 3DS :)

    • Co-Wink-Key-Dink inc.

      @thepsvitaisbetter
Why you have this username when your not trolling?! Just remember…
“A failed troll is pure failure”

    • luis64

There wasnt anything wrong with the water temple in OoT, weakling

    • the psvita is better

@Co-Wink-Key-Dink inc. because thats my own personal opinion
just because my username shows i prefer sony doesnt mean i am a nintendo troll
it just means i like sony better

    • Jonathan

      @luis64

Weakling? I’ve beaten OoT 64 7 times completely (collecting everything in the game) and finished 4 3-heart runs.

Water Temple was only moderately difficult if you forget the key in the central room after raising the water level. Other than that, the temple doesn’t even come close to the sheer complexity of dungeons in other 3D Zeldas.

My qualm with it is that there is a way you can impede progress (even though you would have to be a complete moron to do so) during the course of the dungeon. It happened to me once when I was a kid playing the game and sucked, to say the very least.

  • KING Z

wow nintendo just wow -_- of course you make it optional -_-

    • Classic Hyper Sonic The Hedgehog A.K.A Rc/AGES

Who said that it was optional?
I had heard that nobody will be able to connect to wi-fi on MK7 until they update it.

    • AceOfBlades247

If it was optinal it would throw the game off balance.

    • Derrick

      It is not optional. PROOF:

  • Mondy

Thats crap. It should update as soon as you go onlIne to play. what happened to give birth did you not update in the shop?

    • Mondy

      Stupid voice controll…

  • rockytem

good. i’m tired of seeing noobs choose that map everytime just cuz they can’t race well.

    • AceOfBlades247

      Ikr
But I do it when they pick it to not lose.

    • AceOfBlades247

      It = the glitch

    • mariomarioman

      @aceofblades
      me too.

    • miiworld2

Me too. And it’s not just the noobs. It’s the freaking experts too. And I’m a noob, but I like to race fair! I HATE that stage glitch.

    • Lene

I don’t do the glitch. And sometimes I even manage to end before the last cheater.

    • Evan

      I can’t agree more.

    FREAKIN’ FINALLY!!!

  • Classic Hyper Sonic The Hedgehog A.K.A Rc/AGES

Heh. I had originally though that it would be the same day as the update, but then I remembered that the e-shop updates the day after…
I wonder if MK7 will also get some DLC.

  • http://hybrilynx.net/ Hybrilynx

i dont even play the game anymore. guess its not my type.

  • AceOfBlades247

Well, I’m Glad I can do it but It so hard to pull off without an item. So it has it’s advantages and disadvantages

  • 5thinline

i hope they patch it to include single player VS mode… not very likely tho -_-

    • my name is of no importance

yes, i didnt make sense to me why they removed it, lets just hope they will

    • Total911

I totally agree. Had so much fun with that on Mario Kart DS. I want DLC, too, if at all possible.

  • ?

lol so pretty much we can avoid updating our 3ds and play with the patch still

  • Matthew

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

    • I have now changed my name to: 3DS and Vita are Both Cool

      the patch is optional

@I have now changed my name to: 3DS and Vita are Both Cool
You have to update to play online, so it’s not really optional. (Nice name by the way, good to see someone else see’s it ok to like both consoles)

    • 3DS and Vita are Both Cool

@ZeAllmighty1 :: Ah, thanks! And yes, both consoles are cool.

    • Derrick

THE PATCH IS NOT OPTIONAL! WHY DOES EVERYONE KEEP SAYING THAT? God!

  • Ty

Eh- don’t care. Stopped playing months ago. Really disappointing game- especially when compared to the DS game.

    • George

      ikr

    • the psvita is better

i am not gonna say its bad because it is not a bad game, is actually really fun ,but the fact that they rushed the game its pretty noticeable
i kinda of hate them for doing that also because they only release one mario kart per console so we just have to be happy with this
i hope they dont rush the wii u version though, there is a lot of potential for mario kart wii u

    • http://passid.ca/paulio LazyKite

Highly agree with you, i traded it in a few months ago…. The tracks where just too easy and kind boring! :/

    • Boosos

There is going to be DLCs for MK7 so hang in there.

    • Sonic260

I must agree, but I still play it. The game just feels unfinished when you compare it to the previous Mario Karts that have become the new standards.

  • George

Good thing I don’t play this game anymore.

    • http://images.wikia.com/croc/images/d/d5/Croc!.jpeg Mr Rex

      Not exactly a good thing!

  • http://new Billy*

    good finally.

  • Co-Wink-Key-Dink inc.
  • Brett

Why do I remember them saying they wouldn’t fix it?

    • http://images.wikia.com/croc/images/d/d5/Croc!.jpeg Mr Rex

They had no plans to do so. and now they do!

    • Boosos

They didnt have plans to do so at that time, but now they are taking the time to do it.

  • Zonic

Thank god I hate losing VR just because of that glitch. Maybe I’ll finally get the last gold part lol

  • loganku

oh and you cant play mk7 online without the patch

    • Duncan

yeah, that way everyone HAS to download it.

  • DT-Fox

Its interesting, because a few months ago, I remember Nintendo saying they had no intentions of fixing the glitch since that’ll give early players an unfair advantage.

That being said, I’m INCREDIBLY glad to hear that Nintnedo’s getting in on the patching game. Brawl and MKWii could’ve definitely used it. But ya can’t live int he past forever. This really gives me hope for future online games, though. :D

  • http://passid.ca/paulio LazyKite

i must say i always took the cut and won online! ;D

    • http://www.youtube.com/ZeAllMighty1 ZeAllMighty1

Well if that’s the only way you can win, I feel sorry for you.

    • Boosos

I understand him, it feels bad to be in last place.

  • Kape

    Good to hear.

  • Calztchi

NO-ONE HAS CONFIRMED WHETHER THE PATCH IS OPTIONAL OR NOT. More than likely, you’ll have to download the patch before you can race online again, and a bit less likely but still a good idea would be to reset the Time Trials data for that track because it’s still affected by the glitch.

  • OmegaPit

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO!

That glitch is what makes maka Wuhu so fun.

Then again, don’t really care anymore because I now play KIU all freaking day.

    • http://www.youtube.com/ZeAllMighty1 ZeAllMighty1

      FUN!
This glitch didn’t make the track fun, this glitch RUINED the track. It’s about time it got fixed. It’s just a way for noobs (like you i’m guessing since your unhappy about this patch) to actually win a race. And not legit.

    • Boosos

are you kidding me freaking noob? This is not cheater kart, inform yourself and start playing justly.

  • Tails the Foxhound

Huzzah! Huzzah! More MK7 online for me! I hope they nuke the ghost data for the track too.

  • Red_Yoshi

Maybe this patch will fix the Belkin Router issue that I have had ever since MK7 came out? (006-0612) I have to go somewhere with free wifi and even then it doesn’t work half the time…

    • Bob

I had the same prob have you tried changing it dns in ur wifi options? That worked for me just change it from
Auto to manual and figure out the code specific to your router.

  • Peter

You know what they’re gonna do ? Fix the Wuhu and add some track for us … I hope

  • DekuShroom

YAY! Now i wont have to play against people that pick Maka Wuhu every game!

  • BR!4N

I found a faster way to do the glitch in time trial, and I hate myself for trying in the first place.

  • Boosos

    FINAAALLLYY!!!!

  • Evan

    YES! No more unfair glitch!

  • Duncan

On the day of the patch, i bet maka wuhu will be the most played track lol.

    • Corey

You bet ya it will be haha. Then it’s time for the cheaters to get sick of it for a change.

  • LittleMofreaky

    tight

  • Matthew

They should add a ”vs” mode while they’re at it

    • Corey

      O__________O

  • Ryan

    YES!! Thank you!

  • Andrei U.

I can’t wait to see some cheaters that don’t know about the patch trying the glitch during online and getting owned.

    • person

How can they not know? They will have to download the patch themselves from e-shop.

    • TheGZeus

      @person
It will force you to download it, but it might not say what’s in it.
Also, what are the chances that an idiot will read any info, as opposed to “go all angry german kid until the game starts”?

  • Colin

Finally! But what about the one on Wuhu Loops? There’s one there, too.

    • http://news Billy★

Exactly, I was wondering when someone would mention that.

  • RicardoSForever

Noobs, go do it while you can.

    • http://news Billy★

      Hahahahaha!!!!!

    • Corey

I’m pretty sure they are. It’s probably flooded with it. I refuse to play online til it’s fixed.

  • Chris

Nintendo means business for sure. Not even the Wii had this kind of support, let alone any of Nintendo’s previous consoles. This reassures my confidence in getting the 3DS. :D

  • DarkBlueNinja

    NOOOOOOOOO!

    • http://news Billy★

      why nooooooo???

  • http://Insonywetrust SyntaxFTW

Shit company nintendo is digging a deeper hole for themselves.

    • http://www.youtube.com/user/dudesonicah22 Rummy

YOUR OPINION…idc also. why are you hateing in a nintendo 3DS news blog -_-

  • Derrick

    More info about the patch!

In other words, Nintendo will be FORCING you to download the patch. It won’t be optional.

    • Derrick

They also stated the patch as “fixing shortcut exploits”.

In other words, the patch won’t just fix the Wuhu Loop glitch. It will fix ALL glitches regarding shortcuts on ALL tracks.

    • http://news Billy★

Good!! people won’t be so quick to choose maka wuhu and wuhu loop.

    • David

and what about the Bowser’s castle 1 glitch they plan to fix it ?

  • Phil

About bloody time, thanks big N!

  • klim

Hoping Natsume will fix their Tale of Two Towns 3D problems.

  • Sonic260

I hope by “Maka Wuhu” glitch, they mean BOTH of the Wuhu island glitches. There’s a glitch on Wuhu Loop that allows you to skip the entire ending section of the course, and it’s just as doable as the Maka Wuhu glitch.

  • Matt3011

    FINALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

  • mick

“”"I have now changed my name to: 3DS and Vita are Both Cool”"”

    update is out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Corey

Just for the patching, the official update will come later.

  • Corey

I’ve heard May, June, and July. So I guess I’ll give it until July…
