Nintendo has published the above image of the circle pad add-on for the 3DS to their official website. Plus, they’ve also announced that these games will support the accessory:

It may not be the prettiest addition to the 3DS, but it seems like a solid fit for those games in particular, so it’s good to see that developers are supporting it.

  1. me

    UGHHHH

    1. mol

what about the nerk case how is it going to fit

  2. JustinOde

There really planning on going on with this

  3. Billiam

Also, it takes AAA batteries.. I’m not bothered with this addition. Whatever draws in the third parties.

    1. FieraDevilWings

Wait, what? Really? Would it really need it? I suppose it would have plugged into the 3DS somehow…unless it connected wirelessly, then your comment would make sense.

    2. what AAA batteries?? i would have guess the charger. if only i worked at nintendo T-T

    3. Wildman

Oh noes! It needs one AAA battery! *sarcasm*
Won’t bother me any. It’s only $19 anyway.

    4. Monster Hunter…Metal Gear…and Kingdom Hearts.

Thank god this attachment will be getting some use, since those are the three games on that list that I’ve taken heavy interest in.

  4. Cilan

    *Sees KH3D*

Crud. I hope it’s not game breaking or anything.

    1. nintendo_fan

Apparently, if you watch the Theathrythm video on the Nintendo conference site, you’ll see one of the developers playing KH3D without the second analog.

      It’s a good treat.

  5. Brett

Guys. Just please don’t buy it. I want nintendo to know they really screwed up.

    1. nintendo_fan

ohmygoshie, you don’t support Nintendo anymore? 0_0
      I may not be a big fan of that accessory but that hurts. ;_;

    2. chip "shiny teeth" skylark

@Brett Why not try it out first and see how well it plays?

    3. yoyo

i have to buy this i want to play khddd

    4. Sarah

you prolly won’t need it to play khddd. i wouldn’t worry about it too much. Monster hunter on the other hand…

    5. Dae

I don’t see why we shouldn’t. I mean, I believe they could have handled it better, but whatever gets more, higher quality content to the 3DS is a good thing for us all. If you don’t want to use it yourself, then don’t. But the options are always nice to have.

    6. Markes

Of course I’m gonna buy it, I really like this addon :P I don’t see why everyone thinks it’s ugly

    7. molk

      What about the nerf case

    8. Wildman

@ Brett… Dude… It’s 19 dollars. I practically HAVE to buy it at that price.

    9. miiworld2

@Brett HA! Like that’s ever gonna happen. I’ll check out the accessory no matter how large the population are opposed to it.

    10. xnamkcor

I say, buy it, just to show Brett that he really screwed up.

  6. Roxas

Can’t wait to see how KH plays with this…hope doesn’t cost much

  7. cc

    :-/

  8. cacaboy12369

hell yeah, Cant undo da past so just ad it in da future, i love the supported games!!!

  9. miiworld2

I don’t know about you guys, but after thinking about it, I think this accessory could be a good thing.

My guess would be for the Wii U since rumors have it that the 3DS will support the WiiU as an additional controller.

This is just a guess. So please don’t bash me.

    1. Roxas

Actually…that sounds pretty plausible…hope you are reading this stuff Nintendo

    2. Rodolphe

I thought about the same thing :D

    3. Sarah

i thought nintendo said it wasn’t going to be using the 3DS as a controller back during the E3 interviews. hmmm, i’ll have to check

  10. Jericho

What the…? Why didn’t they just make the 3ds with a 2nd analog to begin with? It’s not like they JUST realized they needed one; the games in that list have been in development for a long while . . .

    1. miiworld2

      I have two theories:
      1) if they’ve done that, the 3DS would probably cost twice as much due to additions to development. And 2) they’ll have some rough time with its sales considering how sucking the launch titles were… Well, most launch titles.

    2. miiworld2

And 3) there’s a chance they might use it for WiiU purposes (ie extra controller for WiiU, or Smash Bros. additional content… the works.)

Also think of it as the Classic Controller. Different ways to play 3DS Games but still fun.

    3. Bob

And 4) It would have been a lot larger to fit the circuitry and wouldn’t have matched the old DS’s form factor.

  11. as long as it dont bother the abxy buttons its ok to me. :D

  12. 523

My first thought was for this accessory when I saw it was “Kingdom Hearts could use this”.
    I’m glad now.

  13. chip "shiny teeth" skylark

…….hold on. why is the right circle pad next to the buttons?
shouldnt it be below them (via Gamecube)?

    1. chip "shiny teeth" skylark

funny if they added kid icarus on that list

  14. MENTOS MAN

    ugh so lame :(

  15. mohdfikree

This is coming out in December 10th, 2011.

  16. SDDMN

Accessories aren’t added to the system as a requirement. This is EXACTLY like every other accessory Nintendo has made for it’s past systems such as the Gameboy where there was a light accessory that let you play games in the dark, and this was continued until the GBA SP where Nintendo started backlighting their screens. There was the rumble pack for the DS, and now the 3DS has the second analog accessory. It’s basically traidition for Nintendo to add SOMETHING as an accessory to the current generation handheld people. You can be upset about this if you want, but I’m just saying, Nintendo’s done this before with the handhelds to the point where it’s tradition.

    1. SDDMN

*tradition Geeze I type so fast sometimes I mispell >.>

  17. Personally I’d rather have this than a 3DS redesign

    1. youre right dude. :D

    2. chip "shiny teeth" skylark

of course he is. i’ll be willing to try it out before buying

    3. Belinni

At first I wondered why the heck they put it next to the buttons and why not put it BELOW them…

… but then I played Monster Hunter Freedom 2 for a while and realized what genius placement the analogue stick is in. I will buy this, unless of course it comes bundled with a game like the classic control pro was bundled with MH Tri.

  18. yoyo

what i need this to play kingdom hearts omg -___-

    1. chip "shiny teeth" skylark

maybe its optional, its not really required.

…then again you do need a camera control. CURSES!!!

  19. KIKU-007

1500 Yen, so it will probs be like, $15 US here? Guess thats not bad, but hopefully it will be included with MH3 like people are assuming. I’m all for it, I’m no hater!

    1. More like $20.

    2. KIKU-007

OH, and I think it has the same release date as MH3, so that is promising.. Or has it already been revealed that its packaged with the game?

  20. why cant they understand that nintendo will not put this if they think this is a destruction .

    tsk.tsk

  21. Oscar F.

well, the damage is already done so lets move forward… this accesory doesnt look that bad u_u

  22. say what?

all i got to say its way better then nothing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! its like ppl wanted nintnedo to announce a new redisgn so they can go apeshyt but instead they give the best solution possible and ur till mad? guess u really cant plz every body and to those who say IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN THERE its not and i dont care so get over it =D)) DOUBLE CHIN!

  23. I wouldn’t be caught dead using this thing in public. What in the world is Nintendo thinking?

Hoping this won’t be a requirement to play these games…

  24. wcailum

    Yay :D I can’t wait!

  25. chip "shiny teeth" skylark

..maybe there’s a reason why the space between the abxy buttons and the power button is empty…
maybe the circle pad was suppose to be inserted there? idk

  26. adfbibasjdlgnk

Ugh, I knew KH3D would be in there.

And while camera controls for BBS weren’t bad, the unit was easier to hold onto and hit the shoulder buttons than on the 3DS for me. I may just have to give in to this money-sucker. -__-

  27. Sarah

have fun trying to reach for those face buttons lol. i’ll make do with the screen thnx

    1. chip "shiny teeth" skylark

      i lol’d hard when i read this

  28. FlyGuy95

    …I’m OK with this!

  29. AidanSazer13

I sure freaking hope this is compatible with Luigi’s Mansion 2, and Kid Icarus Uprising!!!!!

  30. Rodolphe

Frankly, it does not look bad at all.
At first I was going mad because, we have to admit it, that ruins completely the delicate design of the 3DS.
But I realised that I always thought that the 3DS was to small for my hands, this might be the solution that I was looking for.
And also, it looks quite ergonomic, if you come to think of it the thumb can go fast and easily between the pad and the abyx buttons.
Definitely I will buy it !

  31. Unknown

I just hope that there will be more fps games on the 3DS. I dont mind getting this anyway.

    1. Sarah

      eww

  32. The Great Alex

    I’M GETTIN’ ONE!

  33. Marcos Luis

And what does that thing do?

  34. PhazerEffect

Kid Icarus and luigi’s mansion two
    should use it!!

  35. PhazerEffect

Kid Icarus and luigi’s mansion two
    should use it!!

  36. Trulaw

It should at least add rumble or a extra battery or something.

    1. kevin

      RUMBLE!

  37. DT-Fox

I don’t see why people are so off put by it. From what I’ve gathered, it won’t make the 3DS any bigger than the old PSP. And if you could put up with THAT thing…

Doesn’t matter to me, though. For only roughly $20, better gameplay, and compatible with 4 games that I’m interested in, I’m totally getting it. :D

  38. MrKenta

People hate on this accessory too much. It’ll be like the Classic Controller, it won’t be required for any game, but it’ll greatly improve the controls on some of them.

  39. Sean

You know, having a clearer look at it….it doesn’t look too bad…

  40. Exlon

    KH3D?

…Dangit. I was hoping to skip this accessory.

    1. your not required to us this accessory

  41. Sean

It’s disheartening to learn that it needs an AAA battery to work, it’s already annoying enough with the Wii remote.

I think I’ll manage without one.

  42. Austindo

Im going to have to get this seeing as how Kingdom Hearts supports it. I don’t think it’s going to be awful, although it will take out some of that portability factor.

  43. People, if you’ve seen the latest KH3D footage, you would know that this is COMPLETELY OPTIONAL. The guy isn’t using it in the video!!!

    1. miiworld2

That’s true. Video once again can be found in the Theatrythm developers interview video in the TFF website.

Hopefully they’ll be more to come.

  44. JacknZack

They have said it will cost $15-20 in america

  45. FjÀllbaggen

The only thing that I am worried about is the need for the AAA-batteries. I hope it comes with rechargable ones, but looking at the price, that is not very likely.

  46. Orkboy

I just love carrying an extra, bulky peripheral bigger around with my portable handheld “all in one” console. If the peripheral is bigger than the console itself, it sort of defeats the purpose of portable gaming doesn’t it?

    1. It’s still smaller than the PSP and vita in terms of length XD

  47. Cody

This is something that should have been on the 3DS in the first place.

  48. AM

It is optional for most of the above games, so you do not need it to play games (thank god!)

    1. Orkboy

But you’ll likely miss out on the ability to pan the camera around. They’re not going to simply let you use the touchpad instead, it’s going to be either buy our unwieldy peripheral that is bigger than the 3DS itself, or miss out on full control for these games.

  49. desolationstorm

The only good thing is that it is coming out early. Now for the new model which has it built in.

Then we don’t need to worry about accessory failures.

Just seems like a big attachment. Wonder if they thought about adding extra battery pack in there.

  50. deityofanime

If the third party device comes out that barely juts out and doubles as a battery I’ll buy it. But not this thing.

  51. MOZAKI

for the people says it looks ok now…
dont forget how thick this thing is if you saw it from the bottom

  52. invictus

STUPID. I hate it and I’m not buying it.

  53. Anon

As long as it always remains as “supports” the accessory, I’m willing to put up with this.

  54. SorryIPissedYou

No thanks… I’ll buy a psvita if i want a handheld with a second analog stick.

  55. aznhomieboi1689

They shouldve included two analog pads in the first place

  56. Han Solo

Dumbest idea Nintendo has ever made. If any game requires the add-on, I’m not playing it. Don’t care how bad I want the game.

  57. Jasmyn

Well, at least I know I wont have to buy it until KH Dream Drop Distance comes out. I don’t mind shelling out $20 for a game that I love. I just can’t wait until Nintendo releases an “updated model” of the 3DS in 2-3 years. Then maybe I won’t have to pull extra cash out of my ass to play a decent game.

  58. zxride64

I will buy it, it also includes an L2 and R2 buttons so i guess i will have a more of a cosole controller feel. I will definetly use this.

  59. Toby

I am I the only person who thinks this actually looks pretty cool?
September 20th last year and I was PRAYING they would add that second circle pad to the final design even though I knew it wasn’t going to happen.
And now, listening to what their fans are saying, they added the circle pad, what’s the biggy here, I don’t get the problem. KHDDD is going to be awesome with this, Resident Evil is going to be awesome with this, MONSTER HUNTER will be awesome with this, don’t give me any crap that it’s not necessary or whatever, it totally is for FPS, stylus controlls are a joke.

    1. Toby

      *Am I, sorry :P

  60. I still think this addon is a terrible idea.

Addons rarely do well plus its a real kick in the nuts for those of us with the Nyko battery as I doubt it would fit.

Yes it might make it more comfortable to hold (which is a biggie for me), but with the addon its going to be a LOT more bulky to carry than a redesigned 3DS XL would be.

    1. Peter

Then don’t buy it. This is for people who want to play 1st person games comfortably… I still don’t see why this is such a big deal to everybody.

  61. Orkboy

You should never make a peripheral that is bigger than the console. It’s a handheld, not a desktop.

  62. samori89

Nintendo really makes dumb decisions, why not just include it on the actual device from the start? maybe the just wanted to make it a selling point with their next redesign.

  63. AfroKoopa

Will this work as a solution for lefties?

  64. JustMe

I’m curious to see why two circle pads will be needed. Perhaps for the left-hand mode in games like Kid Icarus. And does the second circle pad seem smaller?
Anyway. None of the games listed really intreats me but I do really want to try this out. I hope it comes in com ors other than black. It would be stupid to buy a black add-on for my blue 3ds.

  65. cree'az

Id never thought id say this… STUPID NINTENDO! Why didnt you think of this when the 3ds was still in development. Now those sony fanboys have an other reason to dis the 3ds. Sigh

  66. Nate

    hey!
any idea how this is supposed to connect to the 3ds???

    1. loganku

      i wonder the same thing

  67. drwill439

Alright, Nintendo, now we’re getting somewhere. Just wish that you had this figured out in the planning phases of this system (and that I wasn’t forced to go out and buy batteries for it.)

  68. drwill439

Holy crap, wait a tick! This heightens the chance of Monster Hunter coming to North America and other regions!

  69. Szayel

See people, its not going to REQUIRE you to use it. I might pick it up for 10 bucks so I can play some awesome first person shooters at home and leave it off on the go.

  70. Szayel

Also… If you don’t want to carry it around, don’t. Its not like you HAVE to.

  71. loganku

they should of made it look like the guiter hero thing it had a thin plastic around it and th as

    they should remodel it too

  72. GERRELEY

Ugh, I know it says that it supports the following games…but, it better not be required. I’m planning on getting KH. T_T

  73. Josh

If Monster Hunter Tri G is localized, I WILL buy this, hands down. Having two analog sticks for Tri on the Wii (classic controller) was amazing.

  74. Makan95

Hey guys i did some research and it adds R1 R2 L1 L2 buttons. Im buying this and donating the rest of my money to nintendo

  75. Trev

capcom should make an update for resident evil: the mercenaries so that it can support the second circle pad!
