It sounds like the price drop for the 3DS is having the desired effect in Japan. The handheld has sold about 207,000 units in the week starting on August 8th, making it the second best-selling week in the handheld’s lifespan so far. Plus, the price drop didn’t go into effect in Japan until August 11th, so the vast majority of these sales would have been within a period of four days.

3DS was never dead. It just was not selling as fast as it could.

  • DT-Fox

Yeah, for Japan alone, that’s pretty good numbers. And if its doing that good there, imagine how many units were sold in EU, NA, and AUS!

At least, I hope its a lot.

  • http://www.mohdfikree.com mohdfikree

  • ProtoZX

(sudden clap) That’s what I like to hear!

  • Joko

    STREETPASS IS NOW WORTH WHILE

  • paulrenzo

I’m correct in understanding that 207k 3DS units were sold AFTER the price drop right (i.e it doesn’t include units sold since March)?

    If so, daaaang!

  • raedjhn

0_0 now I’m happy for nintendo

  • Isaac Gemal

    AAAAAAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWWWW YYYYYYEEEEEEAAAAAAA

  • Marsalis

Please. Overpricing the 3DS in the first place, and then realeasing hardly ANY good games on it. The Wii was originally $250. How are you going to release a HANDHELD with the same price? Yeah with that price drop, of course its doing better. Not a bad thing, just wondering what Nintendo was thinking in the first place.

  • SAY WHAT!

woot nice ill be supporting as soon as flame red comes out!

  • Ubifan

This is crazy. And it has been proven that most of what Nintendo ships in Japan and North America, North America sells more.

  • ManByMyles93

Good bye, PSP. I knew you well. You had a good run.

    • ManByMyles93

      In Japan.

    • carlos77

this goes to show you that it wasnt that the 3ds didnt have any good games it was the PRICE afterall!!even will only 1 AAA title in zelda it manages to shift an incredible 207k a percentage increase of over 5000 percent after last week in japan the 3ds only sold 10k!!!can you imagine what this is going to shift over the holidays when mario land, mario kart 7,star fox 3d,driver renegade and then next year we have paper mario, kid icarus, resident evil revelations, metal gear solid, super mario sunshine 3d,animal crossing, luigis mansion, and many more!!!:)

    • SCRK

What about professor Layton 5 (Mask of Miracle)?

    • EpicLight

If everyone was an AC fan, they’d get the 3DS without a doubt when the game releases :D

  • Matthius

See? Nintendo knows what they are doing. Now if we could see more handhelds in U.S pockets.

  • wohoo

    Now capcom, bring back Megaman!!!

  • Eric

What are the numbers for the best selling week?

    • Coolguy

It was the launch week so about 400,000k.

    • PrincessZeldaOfHyrule

@Coolguy but that was worldwide wasn’t it so 207,000k in JAPAN only is absolutely amazing.

    • 符思議

      1. first week (371,326)
      2. this week
      3. second week (206,087)

  • Nick

Now for Rhode Island in the U.S. Everyone around here seems to be in love with COD, I haven’t gotten one streetpass tag other than family (which doesn’t count to me.)

    • Ocn_Ctzn

I was from R.I., what I know is that we’re so commercial. Everyone seems to follow trends, hopefully it would be the trend of 3ds’.

  • cacaboy

i just hope that i dont see a bunch of kids running around with 3ds’s, it makes me feel…….wierd

    • Nick

Its bound to happen. Kids all over are gonna be getting the 3DS now; whether it be for their birthdays, holidays, etc. The 3DS is cheap now- its not even worth getting the DSi anymore, for a few extra bucks, you have 3D and better graphics. I just hope to see more people using it in general.

  • https://sites.google.com/site/hybrilynx/ David Hoyle

profit yo. who wouldnt buy a 3ds just to sell it for more money? im talking about for the ambasitor thing.

  • Nick

Bravo, Nintendo, bravo. Now, would you please start working on a messaging system? Maybe a join-game feature on the friend menu? Or how about voice or video chat? I haven’t picked up my 3DS in weeks now, and I’m glad you’re doing better, but I think we could all use some new stuff.

    • LazyKite

a “3DS Book” is what the system needs, something we can send simple messages to our a friends, so there is a reason to actually have friends… also to be able to invite peeps into a game would be cool.

    • gskelter

im from monterrey mexico and here is the same in a lot of places is sold out after the price drop

good for nintendo, only need more good 3rd party games like the nds

  • Peter

Yeah! This is great news! It seems as if everyone in the Dakotas is all caught up in this Call of Duty craze, so hopefully this price drop will get some people to buy one. I only have 2 Streetpass Friends, both of them from different states.

  • TheFreak

    Holiday season, here we come.
I still consider the console’s actual launch to be now. I got it in the first month, but it wasn’t worth it then. Whens shin megami tensei coming out again?

  • spencer

I have done the biggest mistake of my life buying a dsixl a month ago when the 3ds was out..i thought that 3ds was just another ds and was pricey because it was new .i did realize that it had many better apps but i didnt want to wait for its price to drop because by that time my vacation would be over.now after reading the capabilities of 3ds and that its games cannot be played on ds and all i m disappointed ;(((((

    • kidbuu42

ummm yes. its the difference between a gameboy advance and the DS. the dsi is the ds version of the gameboy advance sp. it may look cooler but on the inside its still 7 year old technology

    • Nesyaj0

Not really the DSi has apps and no GBA slot unlike the DS. I still prefer the DS/DSL over the DSi, I still have my DS lite along with my 3DS, but my DS’s L button is getting screwy… justlike every other DS I’ve had… I hope that doesn’t happen to my 3DS…

    • Perry

      @ Nesyaj0

This may sound funny, but have you tried wrapping your mouth around the L button and blowing into it? The same thing happened with my DS phat, DSL and DSi. It works! Somehow dust manages to get in there and screw it up.

    • Ocn_Ctzn

Don’t feel so bad, wait ’till all the awesome games start to roll out and maybe it might force you into trade-ins. Keep a look out for that, stores have been competing with trade-ins so you could get 3ds. Or like me, I game my DS Lite to my sister and we could still play together, 3ds is backwards compatible also.

  • kidtendo

    Yay, go Nintendo!!
let’s hope the US sales start to pick up next :D

  • KnightRider25

Wow, 207,000 3DS in just 4 days? (Since the effect took in Aug 11) Well I know Nintendo is happy with this number.

  • Sean

    Good

Now hopefully there will be a similar success outside Japan.

They could be doing more to promote the 3DS though, I want to see 3DS ads being rammed down my throat..

  • Craig

I definitely think Nintendo have learnt from their mistakes now – the ads are telling people it’s next gen, the price is maybe too low but low enough that people are buying it and I’m so happy that even in Japan alone, it’s working :-) people can realise what this machine can do first hand now.

  • SuperTacoMaster

This is just awesome, its always nice to hear sales go up it gives everyone a higher chance to streetpass ive only passed 5 scine school went out, about 3 weekly whenever I was in schoo, theore the merrier! :)
Oh and theres a new nimtendo video up now, so this is “it girl” ( by jason Deruro) seriously :b check it out

  • Kip

Not being pessimistic, but I think we should wait till the end of the next week before we can truly rejoice. Fingers crossed that the momentum continues on…

    BUT HOORAY 200K FREAKING UNITS

  • http://nintendo3dsblog.com cori

yes! more people more streetpass :D

    • EpicLight

      ^ Likelikelikelikelike

  • Joe Cullen

Also, Super Pokemon Scramble sold 116,000. I swear that has at least a lil’ bit to do with the huge amount of sales in Japan.

  • manowar

i bought mine on the 9th AND got it for 169.00 AND got a 10% discount WOOT WOOT!!!
