Good news everyone! Not only can you capture 3D photos with your Nintendo 3DS, but you’re able to transfer these photos to your computer via your SD card in the open .mpo file format. This means that they can be easily viewed on 3D-enabled computers, digital picture frames and televisions. And, I imagine you could use some fancy tech wizardry to take this sort of file and make it viewable in that old-school form of red and cyan type of 3D. That might not really be necessary, but it’s nice to know the option should be possible.

…and at least we can breathe a sigh of relief that Nintendo aren’t using some funky proprietary format.

    Awesome! :D :D

And I dont care whether I’m first or not.

    1. Thank goodness. A good thinker.

    2. skywardsword

Don’t bring it up, if that’s the case…

    3. @skywardsword You’ve done it before…..

  2. Glad to hear this news.

I have my pair of red-cyan 3D glasses here, and it’ll be cool to enable 3D on the photos.

    1. Why would you need to wear them, you do know the 3DS is 3D without glasses right? And not the red-cyan type either. You don’t sound like you’ve heard a lot but I might be mistaken and misunderstood….

You need the classes if you want to see the photos in 3d on your computer or elsewhere

Is there a program that I can use to combine two .jpg or .bmp images into a single .mpo image?

I want to try making some computer-generated 3d images to display on the 3DS.

    1. WingedOne

I was able to find some stuff about splitting .mpo files into single images, but I want to to the opposite.

      Anyone know?

    2. WingedOne

“want to to” = “want to do”.

      Arghh!

    3. Jesse

      Try googling it. :P

    4. WingedOne

      I’ve already tried Googling it.

I’ve only been able to find software that will convert from .mpo to .jpg, but not from .jpg to .mpo.

    5. WingedOne

I found something here that might work:

It’s good that they’re using an open format. It’s even better that they’re using one that basically contains two standard JPEG files which I gather can be split apart ( http://www.srphotos.co.uk/wordpress/?p=574 ). :D This has suddenly made the 3D camera a lot more interesting to me (and it was already pretty interesting to me to begin with!).

  13. [...] The least I could hope for is support for is support for 3D images displayed in web pages. The LEAST. The standard open format is .mpo and fortunately the same format in which the 3DS saves it’s 3D photos. [...]
