Starting in March 2012, Nintendo will be providing the Louvre with five thousand 3DS units that visitors can rent and use to better experience the French museum. Each 3DS will be loaded with special itineraries, audio-tours in seven different languages and custom, Nintendo-made software. We’re not sure exactly what the purpose of this software is though. An easy guess would be that it’s educational though.

    • Samrat

Yeah, it will be definitely an improvement from the MP3 tours they have now…

  • Mike S

Not that i’m going anytime soon, but will i get something special if i bring MY 3DS?

    • Belinni

Special looks from the people who work there!

… but really I wonder if these 3DS’ are made JUST for the tour or is there something else to it.

    • daniel

of course its just for the tour, publicity and fun :)

  • bite me

thats a cool idea. nintendo should do more of this. who doesnt want to do a virtual tour of a french museum? i’d like to see all kinds of art that frenchies put in there.

  • dibbler

It would be cool to offer a 3D tour of the Louvre through the eshop for $1.99 or something…

    • Eragon Fowl

      I know right.

  • Perry

That is pretty cool. I bet they want people to take 3D pictures and there will be an online photo album. Something like that.

Awsome cause im going there this Christmas vacation.

  • mariofan3ds

    Lucky

  • Kamkid

You know what would be nice, if you already own a 3ds, you could downlaod the tour software via Nintendo zone, and use ur own 3ds to take the tour AND take 3d pics and vids.

Ah, to dream a museum would have a paid service for free.

  • JefteNintendoNerd

    wait for update

You won’t enjoy your 3DS as much as you’d think. The Louvre is always extremely crowded. You’d need headphones to hear the thing.

    • Soeroah

OH, that’s what they meant. For a few minutes I thought it was an AR type deal. Move into a room, pivot your 3DS around to see different parts of the room and the like.

As an actual audio tour thing you carry around IN the Louvre? That’s kinda pointless when there are probably alternatives.

    • http://thegreatestwebsiteinhistory.wordpress.com/ Forgael

That’s actually what I gleaned from the part that read, “Each 3DS will be loaded with special itineraries, audio-tours in seven different languages and custom, Nintendo-made software.” The purpose of the software is anyone’s guess, it may even be the AR software we’re speculating on.

    • Lance

Tell me about it. The thing was so ridiculously crowded and busy, our guide got into a fight with a guard.

      It was worth it, though.

  • Zack

    Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh… what?

    • DavidW

We heard you like three dimensional tours…

  • JMan

Anybody else think they are dong it to promote Rhythm Thief & The Emperor’s Treasure. It does seem to feature Louvre and and it also seems to be releasing next year maybe around the same time. Just my guess though.

  • Adam…

That’s actually pretty fucking awesome. I’d do that any day.

  • Jono

Prehaps every museum should just sell their own game cards.

  • GoodSamaritanCritic

Well that’s plainly stupid. Why not use a mobile device or a tablet? The 3DS is so limited in terms of memory. Oh wait, let me guess: “You can experience the education and discovery….IN 3D!!!” -_-’ Usual bullshit. Bravo, Ninty…

    • Zed

Yeah, it’s so limited when it comes to memory! Why don’t they use iPads? I mean, a 16GB iPad is only, what, $500? And comes with a slowly degrading, irreplaceable battery and has no way to upgrade the memory. Psh, you can ONLY get two 3DS systems with 32GB of memory each for that price.

Twice as many systems with twice as much memory? Pass.

  • http://dailynintendo.nl Jordy

    I’ve been there already…
But maybe next time when I go to Paris.
It’s just 3/4 hours away (with TGV).

  • Davidude

Time to get some streetpass!!! :D

  • Buci

    My reaction: oouäh? Wha?

Not that I have something against it. What is wrong with normal audio guides. I mean. The object is still in front of you. So Nintendo is giving france 5000 3ds’s for free, or did the Louvre buy them?
