The website for Theatrhythm Final Fantasy has revealed that the story involves the crystals that control all music in the world being disrupted by the forces of chaos. It is up to the heroes of the Final Fantasy world to restore the light to the crystals of music. There’s a sub-mode known as Series that will allow you to choose a specific game in the Final Fantasy series in order to play through the music in that game. After you’re done, you can then go back and play the same music at varying difficulties in the Challenge sub-mode.

Dengeki Playstation in Japan has revealed some new details about Theatrhythm Final Fantasy. The game will have three modes:
- Music Game
- SpotPass
- Museum
Music Game has three sub-modes known as Series, Challenge, and another which is unnamed.
There are three icons used during the game. The red icon requires you to touch the screen briefly. The yellow icon has you slide in the direction of the arrow within it. The green icon will have you touch and press down on the screen. The songs during the Field Stage of the game will consist of field, town, and dungeon music. They will be more relaxed and there will only be one rhythm line. The Battle Stage will have more difficult music with four rhythm lines.

Plenty of Final Fantasy fans are wary of Theatrhythm Final Fantasy, a rhythm game which was announced a few days ago. But one facet of the game that may bring skeptics in for a closer look is the music itself. The soundtrack you’ll be playing with is a collection of the major songs from the numbered Final Fantasy games.

- Clash on the Big Bridge (Final Fantasy V)
- One Winged Angel (Final Fantasy VII)
- At Zanarkand (Final Fantasy X)
- The Sunleth Waterscape (Final Fantasy XIII)
- The Final Fantasy main theme
