According to a supposedly anonymous source who’s contacted Zelda Informer, the next Smash Bros. game will be known as Smash Bros. Memories. Then, tying in with this name is the general concept that the game will feature many older, retro characters, including: Donkey Kong Jr., Ridley, Pac-Man, Takamaru, Mach Rider, Dig-Dug, and Stanley the Bug Man.

But, as with most anonymous sources, this information is bogus. Aside from there being little chance that Sakurai and the rest of his team have figured out fairly minor details like the title of the game (seriously, that’s something the marketing department does way down the line), the source also says the game will be released at the end of 2013. But no. That will not be happening. It’s too soon.

The game started development in the last six months. How could it possibly be started, completed, then released in less than two years? Sakurai has said to “have patience”, and that’s what we need. Patience. It’s not going to appear under any Christmas trees before the end of 2013.

When it was announced that Smash Bros. would be co-developed with Namco Bandai, many assumed the game would include characters from the Tekken franchise. But Katsuhiro Harada has said that:

The fans, rather than asking about Tales or Gundam, or some of our other franchises, the fans abroad saw Tekken as one of the key words and took off on that.

…and:

We’re not really sure at this moment but when thinking of the player-base who is playing Smash Bros, maybe Tekken characters is something they wouldn’t want, so I’ve been pulling back on that a bit. But I don’t know.

It’s something I want. But maybe I’m not the average portion of the player-base.

Masahiro Sakurai has tweeted the above image of Smash Bros. art that was drawn on a whiteboard by the team working on the game for 3DS and Wii U. It’s still a long road until we see something from the game itself, but at least there’s tidbits to hold us over. You can check after the break for a larger version of the image.

An aggravated gamer from Japan sent a tweet to Masahiro Sakurai, the lead game designer behind Smash Bros. on the 3DS and Wii U, stating that Namco Bandai is “incompetent” and should not be involved with the development of the game. The gamer also asked Sakurai to relinquish his own involvement in the process.

Sakurai was not pleased with this, of course, and responded with:

Knock off looking down on them with narrow-minded thinking.

It will be curious to see how this plays out though. It seems odd for them to bring in a third-party company, but I doubt Nintendo would make such a decision without careful consideration. Let’s hope they don’t regret it.

The latest Nintendo Direct broadcast has confirmed that Namco Bandai is participating in the development of Smash Bros. for the 3DS and the Wii U. This is in addition to Masahiro Sakurai’s team at Project Sora.

There were people that expected to see Smash Bros. at E3 2012. They’re what we call “silly”. And once again, Masahiro Sakurai has clarified that we should not expect Smash Bros. any time soon. It’s in development, but we will be waiting for years before it’s available. Here’s the exact quote:

We’ve just taken what you could call the first step of the process. This is the first time I’ve ever had my next project announced before it’s even entered development, and because of that, I fear that players will be forced to wait even longer than they expect to. Please be patient.

This waiting game will last a while.

Update: As pointed out by Franco, this quote is something I already wrote about. It was making the rounds on some other blogs though and I didn’t pick up on the fact that it’s not new. Even so, it’s still a useful reminder.
