Over the past week, six of the top ten best-selling games in Japan are for the 3DS:

  1. [3DS] Tomodachi Collection: New Life
  2. [3DS] Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon
  3. [3DS] Animal Crossing: New Leaf
  4. [PS3] Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen
  5. [3DS] Dragon Ball Heroes: Ultimate Mission
  6. [PS3] Tomb Raider
  7. [PSP] Kud Wafter: Converted Edition
  8. [3DS] New Super Mario Bros. 2
  9. [PS3] Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 3
  10. [3DS] Run For Money: Flee From the Strongest Hunters in History

And while I know we’re long past the doom-and-gloom people had predicted for the platform, it’s still nice to see how well its doing after so many’s peoples expectations had sunk so low. Let’s just hope the Wii U can pick up the pace in the same way.

The 3DS XL has taken the number-one spot in terms of sales in Japan for this past week, and the regular 3DS has taken the number-three spot (with the Vita in between them). Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon has also spent another week as the best-selling game in the region. You can check out the complete rankings after the break.

Last week, the PlayStation Vita sold 63,581 units in Japan, which made it the best-selling system in the region (even if the sales of the 3DS and 3DS XL were combined). The important question at that point though was, will it continue? But at least for the moment, it hasn’t. The 3DS XL took the number one spot with 47,985 sales, while the Vita sold 36,028 units. There were also 21,454 sales of the regular 3DS, so the gap itself was a fairly wide one.

Animal Crossing New Leaf Screenshot 20

Nintendo of Japan has revealed that Animal Crossing: New Leaf has sold around 2.7 million copies, with almost 800,000 of those being digital copies. That means that 30% of the game’s total sales have been digital. Which version do you plan to pick up when it launches outside of Japan?

Wii-U-Hardware-White-Small

Between the 10th and 16th of December, the Wii U managed to sell 126,916 units in Japan. This figure, however, was a lot less impressive in the shadow of the 3DS, which managed to sell 319,025 units in that same timeframe. So it seems like even Nintendo has a hard time outselling Nintendo. *smug grin*

Dan O’Leary of n-Space has said that the sales for Heroes of Ruin have been disappointing, sharing that:

[We're] not satisfied with the sales. The 3DS attach rate is… challenging at best and it seems that, for all its promise, Heroes of Ruin did not appeal to enough of the installed base.

O’Leary also mentioned that because of this, a sequel to the game is unlikely.

Media Create is reporting that Bravely Default: Flying Fairy sold 141,529 copies in its first week. That accounts for almost 85 percent of its initial shipment. Project X Zone, on the other hand, only sold through about 58 percent of its initial shipment. And while Bravely Default’s sales numbers do give us hope for a localization by Square Enix, Project X Zone’s sales might discourage Namco Bandai from releasing the game outside of Japan. We’ll just have to hope that isn’t the case.
