Reggie Fils-Aime

Reggie Fils-Aime has shared this anecdote at E3 2013:

I was emailing back and forth with Mr. Iwata a couple of weeks ago and he asked me why one reporter in the U.S. was saying that Nintendo ‘wouldn’t even be at E3’ this year. I told him I gave up a long time ago trying to figure out why people report what they do.

But there’s not a lot to “figure out”. This happens for three reasons:

  1. Laziness. Can’t be bothered to get the facts right.
  2. Bitterness. Doesn’t want to get the facts right.
  3. Greed. Misleading to make a story more dramatic, and therefore more profitable.

And for the times I’ve been guilty of any of these (for that has surely been the case), I apologise. But the “wouldn’t even be at E3″ story was particularly bizarre. I did notice a lot of people assuming that Nintendo wouldn’t have any presence at the show. Bit of an odd detail to get wrong.

Reggie Geoff

Spike TV has shared their E3 2013 schedule for the television channel and the live stream via GameTrailers, which includes an interview with both Reggie Fils-Aime and Shigeru Miyamoto at 2pm EST on June 11th. This is the full description:

It’s the interview you’ve been waiting all E3 (well let’s be honest, ALL YEAR!) to see. Geoff Keighley sits down with REGGIE FILS-AIME for an in-depth two part interview about the state of Nintendo. Will Reggie yell at Geoff again or will he check all the boxes and leave the competition in the dust? Find out live! Plus, the legend himself SHIGERU MIYAMOTO joins Geoff as well for a special chat about what’s new at Nintendo. Finally our friends from MEGA64 join us to discuss their thoughts on E3 so far and we show the first E3 demo of SONIC LOST WORLDS for the Wii-U.

Mark your calendars, set your alarms, and prepare for an overwhelming amount of content.

Nintendo will not be hosting a regular press conference this year before the start of E3. They will, however, still be hosting a much smaller press conference where attendees can learn about the games that will be on show, and also get some time with those games. At the moment, we’re not sure if this will be live streamed.

3DS XL Small 4

Reggie Fils-Aime, the President of Nintendo of America has explained that, the white 3DS XL hasn’t come to North America is because the lighter-coloured products “don’t sell very well” in the region. But not all hope is lost, because Nintendo is:

…going to look at the opportunity on a much more limited basis. You might see a limited-time offer with a white or silver 3DS XL, or we might colorize it slightly differently.

Just don’t expect a lighter-coloured version to become one of their always-available options.

Reggie Fils-Aime of Nintendo has confirmed that software sales for the 3DS are outpacing the software sales for the DS, explaining that:

In its first 14 months versus the first 14 months of Nintendo DS, the Nintendo 3DS has managed to sell 10.5 million physical games so far. This figure exceeds the pace that was set by the best-selling system of all time.

Combined with the hardware sales, the 3DS is having quite a good run so far.

It will soon be possible for developers to provide downloadable content for their games on the 3DS. In regards to paid downloadable content, this is what Reggie Fils-Aime, the President of Nintendo of America has said:

…we’re unwilling to sell a piece of a game upfront and, if you will, force a consumer to buy more later. That’s what they don’t want to do, and I completely agree. I think the consumer wants to get, for their money, a complete experience, and then we have opportunities to provide more on top of that.

Basically, Nintendo themselves want to avoid what others developers do in releasing a somewhat unfinished experience that can only be completed with handing over some coin. This is not too surprising though. The trick is to see how other developers make use of the functionality.
