Cliff Bleszinski of Gears of War-fame has shared a beautiful tribute to Nintendo Power, which will see its last issue released in late November. Here’s the introduction:

The Nintendo Fun Club, and later Nintendo Power, were incredibly important periodicals for me growing up in suburban New England. Remember, I grew up in an era pre-internet, so any data one could acquire about games came from only a handful of sources—the back of the box, or from a network of friends. The latter were often unreliable in the fact that they’d make up urban legends, such as the one about the negative worlds in Super Mario Brothers in which Mario allegedly got to go skiing

But you’ll want to read the full thing for his complete warm and fuzzy feelings.

Nintendo has confirmed that Nintendo Power will be coming to an end, with the last issue — the December 2012 issue — set for release in late November. This was their official quote:

Nintendo can confirm that Future US will end the production of Nintendo Power magazine with the last issue slated for December 2012. For Nintendo Power subscription inquiries, please visit nintendopower.com/customerservice. Check out Nintendo at nintendo.com, on Facebook at facebook.com/nintendo or on Twitter @nintendoamerica.

There will also be refunds for recent subscribers:

If … your subscription extends past the final December 2012 issue, you will receive a refund or credit card credit of the remaining value of your subscription. If you reside in the US or Canada, your refund will arrive within 4–6 weeks after the December 2012 issue; for customers outside the US and Canada, your refund will arrive 6–10 weeks after the December 2012 issue.

And it’s still a shame that the magazine is disappearing forever.

The internet has already erupted with all sorts of emotions, so I’m a little late with writing this one, but it’s true: at some point in the nearish future, there will be no more Nintendo Power. The editors and other staff members will be moved to other properties managed by Future Publishing, and the 475,000 monthly readership will have to find a new place to direct their information-hungry eyeballs.

You might be wondering, “Why?” Well, this could tie-in with the general decline of print media that we’re experiencing at the moment. The world is becoming increasingly digital and many magazines are struggling to survive as a result. But what we also know is that Nintendo was not interested in renewing the contract to support the magazine and apparently, just in general, they have been “difficult to work with”.

There is hope that the magazine will continue in a digital form, but that sounds more like a slight-possibility, rather than something we should be counting on. Either way, people are sharing their support for the magazine with the #KeepNintendoPower hashtag on Twitter, so that’s at least one way you can contribute.

The latest issue of Nintendo Power has apparently confirmed that Kid Icarus as a 3D Classic will be coming to North America early next year. No other details about the game have been confirmed at the moment, but it is still nice to have confirmation that it is coming.

Shifting World was revealed a couple of hours ago and the first screenshots from Nintendo Power can be found after the break. The game is based on Shift, which you can click here to play within your web browser. This is the best way to “get” the concept and, in itself, is a lot of fun. There are sixty levels in which you must reach the end goal by turning the entire game world upside down which changes the entire structure of the environment. There are also teleporters, low gravity, exploding barriers and other elements we’ll hear about.
