The latest issue of MCV has revealed that New Super Mario Bros. 2 has sold 29.4% more launch units in the United Kingdom than New Super Mario Bros. did back when it was released for the Nintendo DS. The real test will be whether that margin remains as wide moving forward, but it’s still a nice start for the game to have.

Providing that the world can band together in times of need with the greater good in mind (or maybe we’re just good at achieving trivial milestones), over 35,000,000,000 — yes, that’s thirty-five billion — coins have been collected in New Super Mario Bros. 2. For the moment, 30,000,000,000 of those are from Japan though, so we should all pull a few extra shifts over the next week to balance the numbers.

New Super Mario Bros. 2 is now available via the eShop in North America. The digital version costs $39.99 — the same as the retail version — but comes with the advantage of sitting on your system, always ready to be played. But no matter what version of the game you get, leave your thoughts about it in the comments.

Satoru Iwata has clarified that Nintendo only create on New Super Mario Bros. title per platform, suggesting that we won’t see another title on the 3DS. But although he said they will “probably go ahead and continue at that pace”, he also conceded that Shigeru Miyamoto has a lot of influence in this regard, meaning there is a chance the pace could increase. I sort of like the one-title-per-platform approach though. It’s worked for their other franchises, so I hope the pace does remain the same.

Satoru Iwata has revealed that 5% of sales for New Super Mario Bros. 2 in Japan have been for the downloadable version of the game via the eShop, leaving the vast majority of sales to come via retail. But while most media sites are saying that “only” 5% of sales were digital, I think this is a good start when it concerns a company that has been so hesitant to enter the digital space. Of course, a lower price would surely help boost the numbers in the future, but we might have to wait a while for that to happen.
