There was talk of the “100,000 Strong for Mega Man Legends 3″ movement on the Capcom Unity Podcast. But while “sincere praise is given on how strongly Mega Man fans have banded and cooperated together”, it’s still made clear that Mega Man Legends 3 probably won’t be coming back. It still sucks, but that’s how it is.

Keiji Inafune told Capcom he wanted to finish Mega Man Legends 3 even though he was about to leave the company. They denied the request and eventually cancelled the game. But even after all of this, Inafune has said in a recent interview that “Honestly, I still wanna make it.” And thus, the hope lives on.

Capcom has thanked contributors whose work was chosen to be in Mega Man Legends 3 by sending them a package including a letter, a Servbot image with the words “Thank you! From all the DASH 3 team at Capcom. 2011″ and two mobile cleaners which were set to be released at a Capcom event in Japan. But alas, the game is still cancelled.

Keiji Inafune, who left Capcom a few months back has revealed that, even though he was leaving, he still wanted to finish Mega Man Legends 3, but Capcom wouldn’t let him. Here’s what he said on the subject:

So, I told them that I was going to found my own independent company and leave Capcom. However, I stated that I was ready to make a contract with them so that I could keep working on those projects that I started. I couldn’t start making contracts with other publishers for sure if Capcom agreed to the proposition, but I wanted to see those projects that I started to completion. But it couldn’t be done. They answered, ‘We have no need to do that.

…and also:

[I went to the trouble of]…Finding the right time, gathering the team members, planning strategies, all so we could barely start on Mega Man Legends 3. I really don’t want to quit at this crucial moment…but I can’t keep going at Capcom. I am too tired to keep going. I wanted to leave Capcom to recharge my energy, and support Capcom from there, but it seems they don’t allow it. I want to make all my effort to keep Legends 3 alive, but I’m really not sure I can do it.

That’s some solid dedication from Inafune. It’s a shame it didn’t matter in the end.

Do you have questions about the unreleased Mega Man Legends: Prototype Version, which was intended to act as a demo for the full Mega Man Legends 3 game? You can get those questions answered by someone who actually got to play the demo. Chris Hoffman, a writer for Nintendo Power played the demo before the game was cancelled and will be answering questions about the demo in a future article on GamesRadar. All you have to do to get your questions answered is post them in the comments section here.

Mega Man Legends 3 was cancelled. People rallied. Capcom listened a little. But nothing seems to be bringing the game back. And within the next eight hours the Japanese developer room for the game, where fans would help contribute art amongst other things to be in the final product, will be shutting down. Sad times, indeed.

It confuses me when people bash the fan movement to bring Mega Man Legends 3, or Operation Rainfall, or anything like that. Don’t people see that these movements are just fun to take part in? And the fact that a large group of people who don’t know each other can work together toward a common goal, that’s the sort of thing that should be fostered rather than mocked. But anyway, G4 has a different stance.

They were sent the following email:

Capcom announced that the long-awaited Mega Man Legends 3 has been cancelled. As I type this now, fans are rallying to bring the game back.

Then Morgan Webb and Adam Sessler decided to kill the buzz:

Morgan Webb: I don’t know if I would have used “long-awaited”.

Adam: Or rallying.

Webb – The problem is that nobody cared about that game, so they decided no one would buy it, so they wouldn’t make it.

Sessler: Have fun rallying.

It’s not like this sort of movement hasn’t worked before. It’s unsuccessful more than it is successful of course, but when has that ever been a valid suggestion to not at least try? There’s a video after the break.
