Yoshiaki Koizumi of Nintendo has said in an interview that he believes *Super Mario 3DS* is a core experience in that it features the essence of Mario’s legacy. He describes “the core experience” as:

> …something that we may have started to get away from a little bit when we first started presenting games in 3D like in Super Mario 64. The idea in those games is that you walk around in those environments and give the players a lot of opportunity to explore.

He says that “the real basics of the Super Mario series is that players have to get to the goal of a level without dying. You have short levels with a very quick tempo, and it should be a very thrilling experience.” And this is what they’ve done with *Super Mario 3DS*, bringing the lengths of levels down to about three minutes. Koizumi believes that “this feels closer to the core of the Super Mario Bros. experience traditionally.”

    • Nintend0Nerd1000

I have about $500 thanks to a bunch of gamestop deals for trade ins on my 3ds. Heres my order of buying games.

Sunday- gonna pick up Zelda and preorder Star fox, the 2 marios (still not sure about paper), luigis mansion, and kid icarus.

If any of these come out after November 6, then I have to get them at christmas :( BUT, I get my money back!

    • Santiago

@Nintend0Nerd1000 Paper mario is a really fun rpg with mario character and elements. It’s nothing like the wii one, but it’s really fun. :D

    • cacaboy

hey guys, i liv in AZ and i would have to pay 49¢ of sales tax for zelda links awakening dx. But i put in some random california zip code and now i dont have to pay sales tax :]

    • jesse

    • Carl

@jesse I too thought it was rather hard to get into Zelda at first but when you do it’s more than worth it.

  • jesse

    • lizzie1238

Not getting one of the best (if not the best) games ever

    • jesse

im not that big of a fan of zelda

  • Matt

    I LOVE MARIO!

  • iceguy

    well, who doesn’t love Mario?

    • nin10do4eve

i dont cause i am mario and it would be wierd to love myself

    • Yanikun

      I love myself though.

  • Donut

ugh… i miss super mario 64.. I liked how that played, where you can explore the world around you, i hate that they keep trying to go back

    • Carsten

100% agree. What is said about Mario 3DS sounds extremely disappointing. I hope they make a Super Mario Sunshine remake though.

    • http://csdprojects.co.uk/ Alex Atkin UK

I think Mario Sunshine took it too far, it was too big although the size might have been okay, if you were sure you were “going the right way”.

I suspect all they actually mean here is that its more clear which path you take from A to B. The only problem with more freedom was knowing where to go. For example I never finished Mario 64 DS and now going back, I have no clue where I was supposed to go next.

    • Carl

@Carsten Not a remake but Super Mario Sunshine 2 IMO.

    • LookInvert789

      @Carsten
Hmph, wait a generation or two. I still think of GameCube games as modern, or too modern for any remakes.
PS. Personally I hated Galaxy, but loved Sunshine. I guess it’s the uncrappy storyline or something. Super Mario 3DS’s gameplay looks eerily similar to Galaxy minus the space gimmick, so there’s no way I’m buying this.

    • Carl

@LookInvert789 Jeez, that was one of the dumbest things I heard in a long long time (about 3 minutes).

    • http://www.starbits.posterous.com milky

      Sunshine was the best!
I played all the other marios first and then galaxy 1 and 2 and even the mario and luigi games on ds but Sunshine is now my all time favorite platformer ever.

The levels were so huge and there were sooo many secrets and you could take your time finishing,

  • nin10do4eve

oh and people pliz check out my youtube channel, comment and like if you want and i would like if you subcribed. http://www.youtube.com/user/nin10do4eve?feature=mhee

  • Feint

Dang it, I was hoping to be able to explore and spend 10+ minutes in a world… That’s what I wanted…

    • Goob 1246

Me too. Well, I hoped that either the levels are short, but a whole bunch of them (100 would be my choice, but that’s a little too long) or not that many levels (Lets say about 40?) but take a long time to beat them like, maybe 10 – 20 minutes. Oh well, I hope it’s gonna be about as much play time (or more) as New Super Mario Bros. Wii, and the same creativity and difficulty.

    • Willch

What the fuck are you saying!?
New super Mario bros. Wii AND DS were both really, really short. They weren’t difficult to beat and it seemed that Nintendo only concentrated on the graphics.

Also, a game can never, NEVER, be too long

    • Goob 1246

Man, chill out! I was only saying what I hoped for. My thoughts, so you can’t do a thing about it. Just sharing what I wanted. And, just because it took very little time to beat NSMB Wii it doesn’t mean that EVERY person can beat it that fast. In fact, I have New Super Mario Bros. and even though I had it for months, I’m only at World 5. So with that, there can be a game a little too long with some players. Not like everyone plays games the SAME way. Example, look at how some Let’s Players play SM 64.

    • Goob 1246

And the 2D mario games were a little hard for me.

    • Df

You guys don’t get it. They do spend time on the game. its not only about passing missions and saving a princess, its also about getting secret items you can get only by collecting star coins or getting secret missions. in other words BONUS CONTENT

  • shockwave

Mario 3d has: A flagpole Timed levels Levels in World-Level (such as 2-5) format No seeming time limit on the fire flower Mini Mario (and no heath circle like the previous 3d Mario’s, leading to a power-up based life system)

All these things are not components of 3d Mario titles, but of Super Mario Bros. IS SUPER MARIO 3D JUST SUPER MARIO BROS IN A 3D FORMAT?

  • Lazerith

Well, this here made me not want this game anymore. I only like the linear, timed gameplay of the Super Mario Bros. games which are 2D platformers. It works very well with those. But for Super Mario, the thing I liked best about the 3D adventure games was the whole aspect of adventure. So I am more than likely not going to get this.

    • Robert

same here. This tidbit is making me second guess my decision on buying this

  • shamotray

add me my fc is 2320-6176-3412

    • abbe

    • Crazyhobo100

I’ll add you:-D my FC is 0860-3256-3400 do you play Mario Kart/Animal Crossing?

  • Yanikun

I think what Koizumi-san meant to say was this: “2D platformers have always had the exact same goal, reaching the end of a level without dying, so that has never been the essence of Mario or it wouldn’t be as popular as it is today, and the idea of short levels with a quick tempo for a thrilling experience is basically just Sonic, which by the way, is also coming to the 3DS as a 2D platformer instead of the 3D versions on console. We also knew the 3DS only has one 3D platformer – a port of a 12 year-old game – and no original one, while it already has Rabbids Travel in Time in 2D, will have Sonic Generations in 2D, Rayman Origins in 2D, Paper Mario in 2D and Mutant Mudds on the eShop in 2D, so we though, “Hey, why make more efforts when we could just say it’s ‘going back to the franchise’s roots’ and make it basically a 2D game?” so we’re really hoping people will shell 40 bucks because it’s the closest they can get to a Mario platformer on the 3DS while we very well know it would have been a lot better if people had been able to explore vast environments in 3D.”

I am very disappointed. It’s a Mario game so I know it will be good, but they shouldn’t kid themselves thinking they’re doing fans a favor by basically making it as simple a game as possible and missing yet another opportunity to bring us a rich 3D platformer on the 3DS. It’s the 3DS, not the Game Boy Advance.

    • TheFreak

No i think thats not what theyre saying… You know how gameplay on the 2d games always seems very dense and fast? (as in tons of content per level, tons of extra things to find per level). For me, personally, the 3d mario games always seem a bit slow (the walking and hitting etc) and mario never seemed as agile in the 3d games. What theyre trying to do is to densen the gameplay, which is not restricting freedom.

    • Mr. Paper

Umm, Paper Mario isn’t a platformer nor is it full 2d. The character models may be 2D and ,true, most of it is sidescrolling, but the world is 3D and you can move in that 3D space like any 3D game would. And BTW the new Mario game for 3DS will be a 3D platformer.

  • http://MacroManJr.blogspot.com/ Brian L.

    Hmm….

  • RobotMario

I think it’s cool that they’re doing this but I hope this doesn’t become the norm for 3D Mario games

  • Goob 1246

I think there should be a choice to have either a classic option and a modern option (Like Sonic Generations) so in the classic, you would reach the flag like Super Mario Bros/etc. with the timer and bla bla bla and the modern would be like Mario 64, Galaxy 1 and 2, Sunshine, and 64 DS so you could explore the world freely and instead of a flag, you would have get a star with the 3D mario games mechanics. That would be cool.

  • Goob 1246

It’s funny how the last three comments start with ” I think”.

    • RobotMario

You should have said: “I think it’s funny how the last three comments start with ” I think”.”and continued it

    • Goob 1246

      Or you could’ve said , ” I think you should … “

  • Willch

    FFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUU-
This is the opposite of what i want from the Mario series D:
I want a game that is like a sequel to Super Mario 64. By having short levels that means that there is likely to be less content either that or the game will feel short to complete, like Mario Galaxy.

MAKE YOUR GAMES LONGER, NINTENDO! I don’t give a fuck about graphics :@

    • Mr. Paper

Who says the game will be short? Just because the levels are slightly shorter doesn’t mean the entire game will.

  • anaim

If Nintendo love us they share the Super Mario 3D Demo on Eshop :)

  • shockwave

THIS IS NOT 3D MARIO! 3D MARIO IS A TOTALLY DIFFERENT EXPERIENCE THAN 2D MARIO!

Forget Mario kart, get Zelda instead! You won’t regret it!!!!

    • lizzie1238

Oops ignore that post I meant it as a reply

  • lizzie1238

I don’t see why people are complaining about this. Don’t get me wrong, the 3D Mario games are great, but I hate spending forever on a level and replaying parts of it so many times because I keep dying. I like how this game will be just like the 2D Marios, but in 3D.

  • Jmaster720

Most anticipated game on the 3DS besides you know……………….(OOT)

  • dk

Why do Goombas look like cardboards like in Paper Mario there? I don’t like the addition of rolling either, but the game looks yummy.

    • TheEclipse

They’re decoils. In the trailer, it shows a real one hiding behind the cardboard cutouts.

  • imvudude

Wait one minute! there will be Power stars AND flags? Awesome!!

  • Jbluna

unrelated but i justthought f somethhing, since netflix is coming to the 3ds, it will probably be dependent on wifi which sucks and would handicap the use of it

    • Pete41608

u have to have an internet connection to use netflix anyway, so it wouldnt be a surprise.

    • cacaboy

i hav been waiting 4 netflix on 3ds, do u no wen it’ll come out?

    • David Cecil

      How else would it work?

    • elctric

didn’t someone from nintendo say you could watch it on the wii then download it on to 3ds on the go?

  • Silver

I like the idea of short levels, but they had better made the game much longer at this cost.

If they made the game itself shorter, then those levels must be great with replay value.
…Then again, what mario game isnt?

  • https://sites.google.com/site/hybrilynx/ David Hoyle

nintendo is just lazy, probably broke and cant afford to make games better. i cant even edit a freaking thread on pojo.biz using the 3ds internet. i probably cant even edit any simple post on any forums at all! and by edit i mean edit & save the edit. nintendo is lame crap.

    • rod

Someone’s internet sucks. I can write, post, and edit stuff on forums just fine on my 3DS. I type comments on here with my 3DS’s browser all the time too.

    • https://sites.google.com/site/hybrilynx/ David Hoyle

@rod : well you cant on pojo.biz. or at least, you cant edit (you can enter the edit mode) and then save it. to be more exact, after you enter the edit mode (at least for trade threads) you cant save, go advanced, or even cancel the editing mode. that has nothing to do with internet connection. i can click those buttons over & over, but they dont do anything. i can on a dsi browser, but i cant on the 3ds browser.

    • Hydroxianchaos

      TROLOLOLOLOOLOLOLOLOLOL

I can see someone is trying to take their fustration out on this game. Tell me, what exactly does a web browser, made by ACCESS, powered by NET FRONT have absolutely anything that has to do with Nintendo being broke? They’re just trying something new, like they always have. If you can’t accept innovation, you can’t accept Nintendo. Would a lazy Nintendo make Kid Icarus? Would a lazy Nintendo make the Wii U, a console more powerful than either an X Box or PS3?

Though, if you’re a troll, move along, we don’t want your kind here.

And please, for god’s sake man, capital letters, do you use them? And don’t tell me you’re using your 3DS because I am.

P.S. Think Nintendo even cares about “pojo.biz”?

    • Df

Go back to Sony or Microsoft and cry to them about your wifi. It’s not Nintendo’s fault about your wifi. I can write a 2 page essay on my facebook wall using my 3ds only like how I am using it right now to write this.

  • Zarx

Wow, lots of hate on this announcement. Personally, I was extremely excited to hear this. While mario 64 was revolutionary at the time, in retrospect, its probably one of my least favorite mario games. Its just a bunch of wandering around trying to collect stuff, and playing the same levels over and over with slight changes. I don’t feel that that was what mario was about at all. Super mario galaxy started to get back on the right track I think, because it was a lot more streamlined and had smaller, more focused goals. If Super mario 3ds takes things even further in that direction, this could end up being one of my all time favorite mario adventures.

    • dubYA

Totally agree. Mario 64 is an awesome game, revolutionary even, but it did away with many of the staples that gave the classic 2D Mario games their charm. I love the Galaxy games, and Galaxy 2 in particular seemed to give off that classic mario vibe even though it was a 3d platformer. However, I always wanted to see what a 3D Mario would be like if it incorporated the classic 2D elements and rules, and now it looks like I’ll finally be able to find out. It’s almost like Nintendo read my mind.

Very, very excited for this game on all fronts.

    • lizzie1238

      I agree as well

  • DalekHybrid

I loved Mario 64 but I didn’t play much of Mario Galaxy. I hope this game is as good as it looks.

  • rod

God you can’t please people. Yes the 3D Mario games have been nice and fun and filled with exploring, but what’s so bad about bringing the 2D Mario aspects back!? There are probably plenty of kids who have never played the original Mario Bros. so this will be great for them! Plus just because the levels are shorter doesn’t mean there will be less content. It’s Nintendo! Mario games always have a bunch of stuff to do or tons of challenging levels. I think it’s GREAT we’re finally getting some traditional Mario stuff. Don’t get me wrong I also love the exploring and stuff in 3D Mario games like Galaxy, but I think this will be just as fun of a game. It’s not like this will be the only Mario game on the 3DS. We’ll probably get a 3D exploring game later. I for one can’t wait for this game!

  • PorkyMinch

EVERYONE LISTEN! Donkey Kong is now on the virtual console! It’s an awesome game!

    • Mikael

ok, i just realized something, i dont know if its a glitch but in the mario trailer on the 3ds, at the beginning where mario rolls and breaks the goomba panels, when the shards are flying press pause and the eyebrows of the goomba are gone :/

  • anonymous

I’ll judge when i get the game. It still looks great.

  • Great Alex

I’d pay $200 for this game right now.

  • Badada

everyone’s seen the gameplay for Super Mario 3DS right? does the gameplay look a lil…”slow” to anyone else”? i know the games gone be great, and imma pick it up no matter what, but the game just looks kinda slow paced compared to many other Mario games i’ve played…

  • Jake

hmm not sure how i feel about this…

  • The Video Gamer

I noticed this when I saw that you couldn’t really move freely in Super Mario 3DS like you can in Super Mario 64. Well at least I won’t get lost.

  • Sleeper
  • Marquis

Why are people jumping the gun and assuming that this will make the levels shorter?
I think what they’re really trying to do is make the game look more frantic and fast-paced, rather than take the slow pace SM64 had.

    • Mariofan

If I can tell you one thing I have noticed about gamers, ALL THEY DO IS COMPLAIN. No I’m serious, everyone who’s complaining is just……….

Like really, what the heck is wrong with this?!

    • Trulaw

A fixed camera angle has greatly lowered my enthusiasm for this game. It just doesn’t feel like a true 3D world without the ability to choose where I look.

    • me

ur not a gamer if you only love hardcore

  • Chris

To me this game looks fun. I kinda like the idea of combining 3D Mario games with 2D games. Defiantly buying this.

  • Df

A true Mario fan would love any original Mario game from Nintendo no matter how it is.

  • Crazyhobo100

If anyone read a comment by me about Pokémon games coming out I was 90% wrong:-( but, I was thinking about when the Pokémon games will be released and here’s when I think the next game will come out! Ruby and Sapphire version 2003 Fire Red and Leaf Green version 2004 Emerald version 2005 Diamond and Pearl version 2007 Platinum version 2009 Heart Gold and Soul Silver version 2010 Black and White version 2011 Gray version 2013 Remake of Ruby and Sapphire version 2014 and new Pokémon game 2015 now I might be wrong! so, yeah, I guess that means I wasted my time, but, I could be right:-) so you never know and also Gray version might not come out tell after the remake so I’m guessing 2014 but I don’t think Game Freak would do that so, yeah, thats what I think, but I could be wrong so whatevs:-D

  • James

I’m not too sure aboot the short and quick-tempo levels. I kinda liked the Super Mario Sunshine type levels that are pretty long and have a clear objective.

    • Carl

I always thought Super Mario Sunshine levels didn’t have a clear objective.

  • Brett

I wish they made a mario game that was like banjo kazooie in the sense that you can explore massive worlds and collect stars in any order. And you wouldn’t have to leave the level every time you got a star.

    • Mikael

yeah its called super mario 64

  • http://youtube.com/funkyshower101 nick

did anyone else notice that it shows mario getting a star in the picture, but in one of the gameplay videos it just shows him getting to the end of a level… what if there are like 2 adventures, one collecting stars like sm64, and then one like the videos where u explore a 3d environment but ur goal is still just the end of the level… that would be AWESOME!!!!!

    • dunkerloop

thats not what the star is there for. The star is not going to be collected during the game like in super mario galaxy or 64, but used as a power up (like it usually is).

  • Glitchmastermario

Yea, this sounds like a cool idea. I’ve always wanted to get to a 3d flag pole

it’s also wierd how this is still here and not donkey kong in the VC.
plus this is my first post from the 3ds

  • Kuro-puppy

I think they’re being smart with this.

Handhelds are great for pick up and play games.

I wouldn’t mind a “big” Mario game in the future though ^_^

  • 3DS Strider

Yay! Now I won’t have to walk around an empty enemy-less space for an hour trying to find one red coin!¡

  • rafmanXD

cool i hope frog suit and hammer suit comes back plus tanooki shouldve been able to transform in this game
