Only a few days after the Nintendo 3DS was announced people were wondering whether there would be an XL version and lthough the announcement of the 3DS did steal the thunder from the DSi XL, it sold well and captured its segment of the market, so will Nintendo repeat the [embiggening](http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Embiggen) process?
Technologically there is nothing stopping Nintendo from creating a XL version. The 3DS uses what is known as parallax barrier technology to achieve its 3D effect and this type of display is being used in televisions over 50″ wide, so that’s not a problem. But this technology is expensive.
Nintendo are estimated to be paying $15-$25 for the 3D screen at the moment, and simply adding a little bit of extra size could add $10 or so to the retail price. That doesn’t sound like much, but then there’s all the extra material required to create the new hardware casing, the R&D costs, and a bigger or more efficient battery (the display would be quite the power hog I’d imagine).
It’s no secret that the 3DS could already be quite expensive in its regular size, seeing as it’s so cutting-edge – I’m not sure if Nintendo would be able to ask for *more* money. You could argue that the costs of the displays (and the other materials) will drop significantly over the next couple of years as more devices become 3D-enabled. That’s a fair point if cost was the only issue, but of course: it isn’t.
Do you know why the Nintendo DSi XL exists? Of course Nintendo wanted to continue to milk their cash cow, but beyond that it serves two main purposes:
* Bringing handheld gaming to older generations and those who may not great eye sight.
* Creating a social experience around a single handhed.
But you may have noticed a problem: an XL version of the 3DS could satisfy neither of these purposes, making it defunct before it even exists.
Aside from the fact that I don’t believe too many people in older generations will latch onto 3D content like the youth will, people with eye sight problems are simply not going to be able to enjoy the experience as much. Of course, you could instruct them to turn down the intensity of the 3D effects to nil, but then you lose the main selling point of the handheld. They may as well stick with the DSi XL from their standpoint.
In terms of social experiences, this is what Reggie Fils-Aime (the President of Nintendo of America) had to say:
> In our mind, the big advance with the DSi XL… is actually the wider view angle. We think making portable gaming more social is a big opportunity and I say this from experience. ([Source](http://www.thetanooki.com/2010/03/27/reggie-once-you-use-the-dsi-xl-you-wont-go-back/))
Once again, with the 3DS, this is impossible. There is no wider view angle on the 3DS and a larger display would not accommodate for that because of the need to look at 3D content from the “sweet spot.” It’ll be no fun for your friends to stand around your 3DS and for them to only see a blurry image while your mind is being blown.
Could this problem be solved though? Yes. There are ways parallax barrier technology can be harnessed to allow for multiple viewing angles (aka, “sweet spots”) but it’s still in very early stages. We’re still a good two or three years away from seeing that technology in consumer devices I’d imagine.
So, should we expect a 3DS XL? I’ve been bursting your bubble this entire article, but I would never say “never” because there could always be something I’m missing.
Costs will go down and technology hurdles will be leaped, but the biggest thing I’m thinking about is what purpose would the 3DS XL serve? Could it survive solely on being a “more social experience” if it could be modified to allow multiple sweet spots? Or is there some other reason Nintendo would decide to beef up the 3DS?

i hope, when i had a normal dsi, it really just felt like a normal size, so when i got my hands on an xl, it was like a friken tv! so now that i have the xl the normal size feels tiny!!, so i really enjoy the xl size and hope they make a 3ds xl (man that would be the biggest sistem title ,Nintendo 3DS XL)
I tried a DSi XL on my trip to Japan earlier this year (well, DSi LL over there), and honestly, I wasn’t impressed. The screen was a bit too pixelated for my taste, but moreover, I simply could not imagine lugging the thing around all day. My DSi’s small size allows me to conveniently slip it into my pocket and because of that, I have it on my person at all times. That won’t happen with a DSi, or 3DS XL, though.
Oh, and it doesn’t help that I’m not a fan of sharing a single handheld. I never let anyone but me touch my DSi; don’t see that changing anytime soon, since I’m overly protective of my stuff.
Count me out, even if they do develop a 3DS XL.
Oh no not this stupid joke again, really? (I’ve read too many article comments with that)
hi there the nintendo 3DS should come in with a 30 inch 42 inch 55 inch 72 inch 105 inch 125 inch 155 inch 180 inch 212 inch 3DS and have 3D tv tuner built in soo nintendo 3DS would become a full tv and oh the max size for 3DS is 300,000 quadtrillion light years and 300 inches
Yeah, the same for me. My niece is visiting at least until school begins in her state and she constantly wants my DSi (not gonna’ happen). Though I was impressed with the screen size of the XL in gamestop, I can’t comment on whether I was impressed since I’ve never played one. Though some by standers who happened to be preteens didn’t much approve of the size of the XL. With that said, I can’t help but be curious about how some games would look, even if pixel-ized (I’ll just hit youtube).
i dont see why 3DSxl COULDN’T BE A Wii 2,,, in a ign interview shigsy even hints at it
he says how big would it need to be in order to replace a home console NOW HIS NOT SAYING A 3DS WITH 32 INCH SCREENS AND A COFFEE TABLE SIZED TOUCHSCREEN
what he is saying is how big would it need be to fit in the HD/3Dhigh performance FOR THE tv out mode AND MAKE A HOME CONSOLE NOT REQUIRED i was already thinking hybrid and 3DS XL so this was music to my ears
imagine 3DS being super successful and home consoles dieing off slightly like it is in japan why make a wii 2 if people are playing there 3DS or wanting a3DS XL
why not make xl a hybrid wen in your hand its a 3DS xl wen docked its wii hd 3D/ wii2……
shigsy is clearly hinting at just that then actual hybrid games can be made were they play both ways or have two characters one in the hand-held story the other in the tv out story each character having things suited to each way of playing
that could be huge i think sony is thinking this is what nintendo will do and thats why there working on a playstaion ipad type device BUT ITS WAY TO LATE FOR SONY TO EVEN TRY
i personally do not see why theres any need for 2 separate consoles any more there’s no point to it really
im guessing instead of upgrading mediocre things like screen brightness, cameras, and size Nintendo will enhance the sweet spot of the parallex barrier hopefully
That would be a pretty great upgrade. Still a few years from that being feasible though.
can not bleev it so cool!!!!!!!!
I’m not in favor of a Nintendo 3DS XL. Last thing we need is yearly/bi-yearly debuts of the same consoles but with different variations.
I was pretty disappointed in the Nintendo DSi. I thought it was going to be a great hardware and a possible successor to the Nintendo DS. Turns out we were wrong.
With the Nintendo 3DS, if Nintendo gets there stuff together (Which they look to be doing), they won’t even need this.
The only reasons i want a 3DS xl
1. I have gotten used to my DSi XL’s size, but i can get over that.
2. If nintendo are gonna start marketing the 3DS, i think a BIG point will be the ability to watch 3D movies at home without having to pay the large amount for a 3D TV. A larger screen for the 3DS would make that more enjoyable
4. Finally the submersion of the gameplay would be at it’s MAX.
my daughter has significant sight loss and can not see screen on 3DS so has to stick to her dsi xl, so proves that for some people they do need this
they should never make this because the 3d and size are already good enough for me
