The announcement back at E3 2010 that the Nintendo 3DS could play 3D movies was pretty neat. Perhaps not the coolest feature, but still a nice-to-have for long car rides and other situations where a bit of eye-popping good times are warranted. Satoru Iwata, the President of Nintendo has a tad more ambition though, sharing that “Hopes are high for the 3DS as the first device that can show 3-D movies to reach a mass market.” It’s a big call to make, and while I do think the 3DS will be a huge catalyst for people accepting 3D content as legitimate entertainment, I’m not sure if it’ll become a common past-time to crowd around a 3.5 inch display to watch the latest work of James Cameron.

  1. The iPod does it, and it’s not 3D. Plus it could have you connect to you 3DTV and stream the movie. Or to Wii and stream in 2D. Like iTunes but connects all your game systems. ;)

    1. David Turnbull

      I have a feeling the 3DS couldn’t stream 1080p content though. ;)

    2. FrangoST

Well, you see that if you want to play a movie on a 3DTV, the movie would have to be prepared for the screen, which mean it would need 120fps, and blinking between the frames, in order to show 60 left eye frames and 60 right eye frames per second in order to produce the effect on these current 3DTV (which I think they SUCKS… the glasses are expensive and the way to reproduce the effect seems like a homemade workaround… c’mon… blinking at 120hz…. that sucks man… where’s peoples criativity… looks like I’ll have to wait for decente auto-3D screens).
So, what I mean is that, it would suck… I’m tired of typing… if you wonder why, research a little deep into the 3D technology on google…

    3. FrangoST

I guess what I meant when I wrote this comment is that 3D portable devices, such as a 3d Smartphone or the 3DS itself uses a whole different technology to reproduce 3D, and that the 3D effects of 3DTV nowadays sucks… (expensive and glasses and looks like a workaround, blah blah blah)

Here’s my take on this, if Nintendo really want to make the 3DS a multimedia device that can be a viable movie player, increase the resolution from the paltry 400×240 that they have and make it 800×480 like every other device on the market.

    1. FrangoST

Well, the resolution of the 3D screen of the 3DS is actually 800×240, but the vertical pixel lines are divided by two, in order to give each eye a different angle of vision (I’ll not explain how the whole 3DS 3D technology work right now ¬¬), and also, if you mean you want the screen to be more wider, than I don’t think a 800×240 per eye is really a common widescreen resolution, which would mean movies would have lines somewhere (probably on the sides) due to the ratio of the screen.

      Also, 400×240 is actually a valid widescreen resolution… it’s 16:10, I guess….

Well, whatever… I think we’ll have to see it for ourselves, when we’re talking about this whole movie-on-the-go thing….

  3. Cub

I don’t know… maybe a lot of people wouldn’t enjoy watching something like a movie on a smaller screen, but I personally don’t have any problem with it. I’m never going to be able to buy a 3D-screen– so this is something that I would really buy into. I like watching my movies on the go, and taking them with me without having the carry a huge box of DVDs. And besides that, after spending so much time with the GBC (well, okay, I did have one of those screen magnifiers for that– even came with a light so I could play in the dark!) the GBA and now the DS, I feel very comfortable watching things on small screens, and in most cases they look just as good to me as (as far as image quality) as those on a large screen TV. I have a lot of movies on the PSP, and I can say that (if you have a good pair of headphones) it can be just as good as those on TV. And there have been several reports that the 3DS screen “sucks you in” and makes it so the screen feels much bigger than it really is.

Either way, I don’t care if I’m one of the only ones, I’m really looking for it! I’ll be the first in the virtual line when Legend of the Guardians comes out on the 3DS!

Dudes….One movie I want to see in 3D is Speed Racer. Its box office sales were terrible, but the movie was still awesome. The best japan anime live action adaption i’ve seen “EVER”

WAYYYY better than that Dragon ball evolution crapfest.
    [DBZ fan]

My hopes are up, because Warner Bros. was one of the movie companies to endorse the 3DS with its movies. Warner Bros = Speed Racer

    1. A Link to the Present

That would be awesome. Speed Racer is probably the only live action movie based on an anime I have ever seen. Dragon Ball Evolution just seemed to be based off the names from DBZ, and The Last Airbender was the worst movie ever to be created by any living or nonliving person, place, thing, animal, idea, verb, or anything period. If I had a choice, I would watch that movie that is just a person sleeping over The Last Airbender.

An interesting factor with 3D displays is that theoretically, because your ability to determine the distance and size of the screen is subverted by the 3D content itself, one loses the ability to visually tell a difference between a large screen and a small screen. Resolution is still an issue, but fundamentally one of the key optical draws of a large TV is actually achieved by 3D screens. Of course the feeling of depth depends on the stereoscopic separation and convergence parameters used in the rendering/photography. 3DS games will no doubt often be tailored to give you the feeling of small 3D objects in the palm of your hand (well, in actuality it’s user adjustable), but the pre-recorded footage in 3D films will generally be tailored for deep epic viewscapes.

  6. Carsten

movies on the 3DS will end up like movies on the PSP

    1. Darin

I don’t think so. 3DS movies will be in 3D like the movies you see in theaters. That’s the hook.
Nintendo just needs some good movies like “James Cameron’s AVATAR” to really catch on and not end up like the PSP and it’s UMD based disc movies.

    2. Carsten

but is the 3D effect enough to convince non-gamers to buy a 3DS? if not: are there enough 3DS owners who are willing to buy a movie for their device? do they want to watch it on a 3,5″ screen and pay…well, I guess itll like 15$ minimum per movie... for it?
Iwata talks about the mass market. If the mass is not big enough, publishers will not support the 3DS, like it was with UMD. And I think it
ll be like that. Just my 2 cents

  7. Fwiller

because 3d movies are shot with 2 lenses…

    1. A Link to the Present

This is an annoying person who keeps posting about the whole blurry thing and cameras only having one eye. He pretended to be stupid when he posted about a video of the 3DS in action and it looked blurry. Somebody explained it to him, not knowing he was only pretending, and now he quotes him every chance he gets.

    2. Gamer

Just tell him he/she can slide it back to 2D. XD

    3. FrangoST

      @A Link to the Present:

That, or he really have some problems… Kinda possible…

  8. handygamer

TheCrippledNewt your comment holds no water !!!!! E3 everyone said 3D movie video content is super sharp and detailed and looks like a mini hd tv 3D but better because of no quality loss because of glasses and has super depth…

the resolution of 3DS when compared to say a 42 inch HD tv is fantastic as you view pixels that are far more compact at only 3.5 inches

    EXAMPLE :
1080p is around 7 x the resolution of 3DS but the screen size at 42 inch is over 10x bigger so pixel to screen area 3DS wins

no portable screen on earth needs HD at 3.5 inch and HD tv levels of contrast/colour/brightness 800×240 is very much HD in DS terms

you loose battery life and gain NOTHING with HD at this tiny size and colour/contrast/brightness etc are all more important for sharp image quality than the resolution thats a optical fact by the way

    1. A Link to the Present

      Maybe they’ll make a 3DS XL.

    :P
I wil use it but not buy it specialy for this
it would be cool if you can stram it to your wii so you can wach movies on it
(witch you can do already with the photochannel :))

    1. flaboy909

It’s funny when people say ‘ I will or did not buy (insert product here) for (insert reason here).’ Instead of justifying your reason to buy something, just say you bought something as a product that appeals to you on all fronts. Extra things are good after all…

  11. 7

i only have ONE problem if they are letting you watch 3d movies i don’t think they will give you the option to watch 2d movies unless i don’t understand something they won’t be giving us 2d on the go movies anymore but i guess that is not important

    1. A Link to the Present

You can just turn the 3D Slider down.

  12. Zachary

Movies on the 3DS = a nice unexpected (before E3) add on that just makes the 3DS that much better. Weather it’s a failure or a success, at least it’s there. Other than that here’s what I think about its possible success:
    1. Small screen. Some don’t mind, some do. Either way, there’s no reason to complain because it’s there and you have a choice to use it. Not only that, because it’s small you don’t have to worry about super good quality because it’s small. You won’t notice tiny changes unless you took that screen and blew it up to the size of a regular TV screen.
    2. Some movies are not 3D. True, which is another use for the slide pad. Ex. “This is (not) a 3D movie, for a better veiwing experience, please turn the 3D dial (up/down, on/off).
    3. What movies they put on it. This one has no real solution because it’s not like the other problems. I think Nintendo can get good support for movies, I don’t think what they presented at E3 is all. Even if it is, each of those companies usually make pretty decent movies, and like I said, it’s your choice to watch and pay for them or not.

What happened to Nintendoyoyoyo’s post? His replies are just regular posts now.

    1. David Turnbull

He was trolling so I deleted his comments.

    2. A Link to the Present

Cool thanks. He was really annoying. By the way, you always seem to reply to my posts pretty fast.

    3. David Turnbull

I do what I can. It is getting difficult to respond to all the comments though. :)

  14. What would make this really good is if you could stream movies you’re watching to other 3DS users using the local wireless connection (not WiFi). You and your friends/family can sit down and watch a movie in 3D together.
