An aggravated gamer from Japan sent a tweet to Masahiro Sakurai, the lead game designer behind Smash Bros. on the 3DS and Wii U, stating that Namco Bandai is “incompetent” and should not be involved with the development of the game. The gamer also asked Sakurai to relinquish his own involvement in the process.

Sakurai was not pleased with this, of course, and responded with:

Knock off looking down on them with narrow-minded thinking.

It will be curious to see how this plays out though. It seems odd for them to bring in a third-party company, but I doubt Nintendo would make such a decision without careful consideration. Let’s hope they don’t regret it.

  • critical

Nice. Japanese don’t want SSB to become Tekken.

    • Enzo

I doubt it will. Masahiro Sakurai is the guy who’s mainly in charge here as he’s the one who created the series, and I’m sure that Namco Bandai recognizes that.

    • critical

I’d rather Capcom help them out. Then we can have Viewtiful Joe, Dante, Phoenix Wright and the whole cast of Resident Evil in SSB.

    • waluigi

      @critical
      mega-man!

    • Nintendo Knight

capcom already announced some of their characters will be in ssb

    • austen

yeah and have capcom charge for dlc when its on the disc? no thanks id rather have pacman from namco than a fat megaman from crapcom

    • StarTropics

The difference between Super Smash Bros. and Tekken is that Tekken has you playing as characters use real fighting styles and martial arts where as Super Smash Bros. gives you characters with move sets based on what the games they come from. I don’t think we’ll be seeing Princess Peach use MMA moves or Mr. Game and Watch the Luchador

    • BlueHawk007

Lol, Game & Watch the Luchador! I laughed so hard when i read that I kinda want that to happen now xD

    • Craig E

As bad as a lot of Namco Bandai games are – Sakurai and his team are still making the overall experience. Namco Bandai are most likely implementing the controls that Sakurai tells them to. They will literally do what Sakurai tells them to, as they’re only hired to help make the game and don’t have decisions on making it drastically different.

  • KeigoNiwa

Exactly… anyone who doesn’t think this is a good idea isn’t seeing the big picture. Bandai Namco has a ton of fighting games under their belt, their most notable being Tekken.

Now this game has the main development team from Tekken on bored. What they can add to Smash Bros is heavy hitting action (aka not as sluggish as brawl) and hopefully more character balance.

Also, the art director and sound director from Soul Calibur on board. So not only will this game look aesthetically epic, but we may actually have a coherrant soundtrack again.

Just because Bandai Namco is working on the game doesn’t me they are changing the formula. Personally, I feel this may just be the best smash bros yet just because of this collaboration.

    • Perry

      Yes.

    • anonymous

      >Also, the art director and sound director from Soul Calibur on board. So not only will this game look aesthetically epic, but we may actually have a coherrant soundtrack again.

Agreed man. I felt Brawl had such a spotty soundtrack without any coherence.

    • ToaEnemis

My thoughts exactly, of all the companies to get aid from for a 2D fighting game, Namco Bandai is the best around. Fighting games are like their specialty. If anything, this collab will help Smash bros become better all around. More balanced, tighter combos, and hopefully get rid of that awful tripping mechanic. Most of all I hope this helps the game get decent online features, and finally be rid of the laggy online play.

    • boyonthemoon

I hope the art director from soul caliber adds some much needed official artwork for the series too. the last two games didnt have any artwork in their instruction manuals or, anywhere…

    • BlueHawk007

While with more ‘original’ music and such I just hope we still get all the old and well known music as well. Part of why I loved Brawl so much was all the history and nostalgia from all the collectibles, music, stages, etc.

But hey, I’m all for this. I’m sure Nintendo won’t get it screwed up and will be what we like and better with more 3rd party fighters.

      I’m excited personally. \ (^_^) /

  • Mohammed Harati

all what I can Hope For Is That They Make It As Good as Nintendo Did With The Past Games

  • millsy

Guys, shut up. Namco Bandai is a great company at fighting games. I remember playing Tekken on my PS when I was a kid. It was a great game.

  • Captain Falcon

There’s criticism? I think it’s great that Namco is helping out. Tekken is somewhat balanced; Smash Bros is not. Simple as that. :)

    • http://www.youtube.com/user/dudesonicah22 Rummy

Yeah i agree remember brawl? Pit was a bit too overpowered

    • http://www.youtube.com/user/MadCrainProductions MadCrain

If anything, Namco can make the experience funner, plus, a few characters may appear from Namco, But I doubt Sakurai will let them turn it into a 2D fighter.

    • Marquis

Pit? lol. If you wanna talk overpowered, look at Meta Knight.

    • N_S

Pit was easy to play but easy to counter. Metaknight is your OP character.

    • N_S

Ah, i completely echoed the comment above me xD

    • austen

sonic is way to overpowered he is hard to hit, very quick, and has a final smash thats twice the damage as pikachu’s and way easier to control!!!

    • boyonthemoon

i’d say ike was the most overpowered. i mean its almost impossible not to get KOed by his strong over A move

    • Baka

Nah nah nah Captain Falcon was overpowered. His b move say FALCON PUNCH and distracts you and it can 1HKO YOU!!! His down b becomes an indestructible barrier that lets him travel across the stage, better than Falco’s side b! his up b and side b can spike you under the stage!

    • Co-Wink-Key-Dink inc.

Yah espically when it’s KIRBY CAPTIN FALCON

    • fireburn528

In other words, every character is OP…

    • zeldahero11

Toon Link is cheap, that’s why I play as him.

    • boyonthemoon

but captain falcon is so easy to dodge, especially his falcon punch

  • Mischief

yay looks like we can play as goku loooool

    • Gamer Blue

lol if only that were true…

    • AceOfBlades247

Spirit Bomb… No. It would crash the system.

  • A Link to the Present

This isn’t the first time Nintendo had a third party help develop a game in one of their major franchises. Capcom developed four Zelda games, and Yoshi’s Island DS was developed by a third party as well.

  • Swankenstein

Super Smash Bros is great because you play as Nintendo characters and you hit eachother. As long as this features in the game, I’m sure it will be great.

If the story mode is pointless and boring – it would be an improvement

If they screw up the balance – It’s already screwed up

If the controls feel flighty and inaccurate – they already do

If they add quirky Namco figures to the lineup – Can’t be worse than Snake, Sonic, or absolutely anyone included in Sony’s retarded version

And honestly, this fuss is all sounding incredibly stupid.

If you distrust a developer whose recent releases include Solatorobo, Dark Souls, the Tales series, Tekken and Soulcalibur franchises then I’m sure you’re not familiar with the gaming industry.

If you wish Smash Bros to continue to be developed entirely by the developers who produced Kid Icarus Uprising… I’m sure you can’t even seriously consider yourself a gamer

    • youdomutilate

OMG U R SO STUPED. I CANT BELEVE HOW STUPED U R. KID ICARUS UPRISING WAS AMAZING AND SONICK WAS AWESOME THEY SHUD ADD TAILS SHADOW KNUXKLES AMY ROUGE CREAM SILVER BLAZE ESPIO CHARMY VECTOR ELISE

“If they screw up the balance – It’s already screwed up”
Please, tell me how Brawl was in anyway balanced…

      @Captain Falcon

Brawl was a floaty, unbalanced mess.

    • Belinni

“If you wish Smash Bros to continue to be developed entirely by the developers who produced Kid Icarus Uprising… I’m sure you can’t even seriously consider yourself a gamer”

… Didn’t they do it 3 times before? The only differences here would be the game taking much longer than brawl to make and Sakurai having a new name behind his team (Sora).

    • Nintendo Knight

no it wasent as responsive as melee but it wasent a mess i prefer it over melee

    • BlueHawk007

Really? I felt Sonic fit in perfectly; he is a cartoony character and just felt right in the game in my opinion and I hope people like Shadow or Tails get in as well, it could be a lot of fun.

Snake while more on the ‘realistic’ side has appeared on Nintendo platforms in the past and his moves were fun and made for some awesome matches.

On the subject of Sony’s version; Who doesn’t like Sackboy? I’ve always wanted him in a fighting game his special moves should be proven interesting, a Big daddy from Bioshock, and Nathan Drake will probably be awesome as well. Although, I’m not sure of the gameplay will be as good as SSB’s series is,but I’m all for trying it out.

    • Tailisu10

What are you implying with Kid Icarus Uprising…

    • nintendo knight

the reason i dont think sony smash clone is a good idea is because half the charecters are from shooters and dont fit in with a ssb clone and some of the moves are tacked on they directly stole one of princess peaches moves for princess fat-ass

    • Symbol de Au

@Captain Falcon: He said it’s unbalanced not that it’s balanced…

  • wolon

They pretty much did the same thing with the last smash so I don’t see how this is that big of a deal.

    • TouyaShiro918

Exactly my sentiments. Namco Bandai’s involvement is not that much different than having several developers on board for Brawl, like Game Arts (later going on to make TMNT: Smash-Up! with their newfound experience).

  • holonboy

If anybody remembers, Brawl involved TONS OF OUTSIDE COMPANIES, many of them were second and third party companies.

    • holonboy

And if I remember correctly, Sakurai said that he did all of the balancing himself with Brawl, but with SSB4, he’s going to have an entire team make sure the game is perfectly balanced. Considering how many fighting games Namco Bandai has made, why wouldn’t they be a good choice to work with.

    • Captain Falcon

Exactly, Smash Bros never got balancing right. Namco Bandai’s Tekken games are usually balanced. I just hope the next Smash Bros is balanced, but is still fun.

    • critical

Sakurai blessed his favourite son Pit with more power than anyone else… Talk about balancing.

There are no such thing as equality, some characters are more equal than others.

    • Captain Falcon

      imo
Sakurai blessed blessed hist favourite anti hero Meta Knight with more power than anyone else. Try to escape Meta Knight’s Mach Tornado; it’s nearly impossible.

    • Deboog

@critical You really have no idea what your talking about. Pit really has nothing going for him except his bair and his arrows. Metaknight on the other hand…

    • Belinni

I find it amusing that we’re talking about Namco helping Smash Bros. become balanced.

Think about it, Namco the creators of Tekken which brought us the classic Eddie Gordo; The king of unbalanced gameplay.

Either way, they probably made Eddie like that on purpose. There’s no way Smash Bros. 4 could be as unbalanced as the past 3 games.

    • Nintendo Knight

ah i remember the good old days of being horribly raped by Eddie and meta knight isnt over powered i beat the crap outta him using sonic all the time all the characters can be defeated with the right amount of skill

    • xbvcb

@ critical u read animal farm i see

    • Pbsmurderer

@Caption Falcon Tekken is balanced you say, well I got one thing to say to you….. Eddy…. Cheap Moves….

  • Omancer

I’m fine with Namco working on it as long as they keep their shitty characters out of the game.

I like Super Smash Bros because it’s Nintendo characters. I don’t want it to be flooded with stupid generic anime style characters. Also, Sonic and Snake were stupid characters in Brawl and should be used as a prime example as to why there should NOT be third party characters.

    • http://www.google.com Abdulraouf

      Are you kidding yourself?

The game got better as it added non Nintendo characters which is always a nice addition and always welcome. I don’t understand why Sonic and Snake were stupid characters in Brawl when I assure you Snake was one of the most used characters and I used him as well.

    • http://hybrilynx.net/ Hybrilynx

i want goku, naruto, toriko, and a space pirate. or at least dark samus.

    • Captain Falcon

      -.-
Kojima wanted Snake to be in Melee, but since the development team was so far in development he was pushed into Brawl.
lol, and Link was in Soul Calibur 2.

    • waluigi

sonic and snake were my favorite character in brawl.

    • the psvita is better

i dont think you ever played the tales of series.
one of those characters in smash would be awesome
the game is actually funner with third party characters you know

    • Samurott

That’s like saying Soul Calibur 2 is terrible just because Link is in it. Re-phrase your words, Omancer.

    • boyonthemoon

no, i agree completely. smash bros is suppose to specifically be nintendo characters in nintendo settings, not vast amounts of just any video game characters or even worse, anime characters. if it really has to happen then i hope nintendo limits themselves to only 2 third party characters per game. keep nintendo nintendo u kno?

    • austen

Sonic was way to cheap i can ko anybody with him, and snake sucked i dont want either of them in the next smash bros! but pacman and simon belmont might not be bad!!!

    • Omancer

I’m just saying, the second they announce any anime style character, I’m done with this game.

It’s going to ruin it. I don’t want this game to be just a clusterfuck of stupid unoriginal characters.

@Samurott, I never said Brawl was a bad game because of Snake and Sonic, I just said they were shitty characters and they didn’t need to be in the game because they don’t fit.

    • XL

And the fire emblem characters aren’t anime style? The pokemon characters aren’t anime style? These nintendo games were made in Japan, so many of them will carry an anime style or are at least influenced by it.

  • http://hybrilynx.net/ Hybrilynx

at least its not capcom. or it would get cancelled.

    • Marquis

No, if it were Capcom, we’d be shelling out $20 each for half of the characters :P
But I wouldn’t mind if Capcom helped out a bit. Street Fighter is my next favourite fighter, after Smash.

and THAT’S where balanca comes in.

      B = Gatling Gun
      B Forward = Bazooka
      B Down = Ballon
      B Up = Storm
      Final Smash = Gear 2nd!

  • ZEROWING

    Just going to say…

Don’t expect anime and manga characters just because Namco is involved. Remember those are borrowed licenses, they don’t own the characters.

Ultimately that decision is up to Shonen Jump’s or any other of the stories copyright owners.

Considering Namco’s involvement though, we should be seeing some 3rd party characters from Namco.

Personally, I’m hoping Sonic and Snake will return with more representation from both of their respective series. Liquid Snake, Tails etc..

Support and representation from Capcom would be great too.

Finally, Namco is full of great game developers. All this negative opposition towards Namco is incredibly unjustified.

Not to mention like others have pointed out, Namco have experience in the fighting genre. Tekken and Soul Calibur are excellent fighting games. Its a shame the ignorant fan-boys have to look down on other developers who aren’t from Nintendo.

Let’s hope that the phrase ” The more, the merrier” will ring true for these games. There are many hopes for this game.

      1) Won’t turn out like the Cartoon Network clone
      2) Definitely more characters than Brawl
      3) Balanced character stats
      4) Able to play with your Mii – I’d either prefer distinct Move rosters based on the Mii’s characteristics or ability to copy other charcter’s moves
      5) Better and more involved game modes (i.e. Tag, RPG-like battles, and whatnot)

The top 4 are what I really hope to see. #5… just a hopeful, but unlikely, guess…

    • boyonthemoon

      @rander12
#2 should be a maybe instead of definitely. sakurai already said hes working on quality instead of quantity since he feels he already reached the limit with how much content they can cram into the game with brawl. i’d expect to see only about 30 characters, especially in the 3ds version

    • Rhino Pubes

Let the anime characters stay in Jump Ultimate Superstars

    • George Tirebiter

Have to agree w/ everything but the 3rd-parties having multiple playable characters from a series. As assist trophies, okay, but the playable characters should be the exception to the overall Nintendo population. If at all possible, a developer should get one character to their name, though I’m fine with -Bandai getting 2 given their work on the game.

    • zeldahero11

      Well said, I completely agree.

  • 009soulmaster

Ugh this pisses me off so much. Why is there so much hate on Namco Bandai the people who made tekken, soul calibar, pacman n the Tales series. It’s not like they’re in charge in the first place. Nobody has good reasons to hate them yet they constantly are hating on them.

  • AM

What wrong with Namco Bandai. I’ve enjoyed most of their games.

  • King Boo

so there’s a team on nintendo land, zelda, and the mario team has dlc work coming up. what is everyone else doing? there should be like 3-6 more teams working right now, depending on how big the teams are for the unannounced games are.

  • N_S

I was expecting to see a snipped defending himself and his decision, but instead he naturally chose to defend them. I have a lot more respect for Sakurai now.

  • JohnJ867

Has anyone here Not played Tekken? Tekken 5 DRO was amazing and Tekken 6? TOP KNOTCH. Namco will do nothing but justice for this game, pretty sure people that are complaining are people who suck at Smash anyway.

  • JohnJ867

And capcom? What’s wrong with you guys. They would just make you buy another game in ten days Smash Bros Brawl Arcade edition ! And put fat megaman and terrible MVC3 Jill instead of mvc2 come on people just shut up.

  • Deboog

I am so happy that Namco is working on it. Brawl proved that Nintendo has no flipping idea how to make a fighting game. They need someone with experience.

    • Captain Falcon

      +1
You know what you’re talking about.

    • Tails the Foxhound

So Brawl (which, barring tripping and Meta Dyke, was better than Melee anyways) somehow automatically negates Melee (that everyone seems to fucking worship) because it was “bad”? Man gamers have some fucking gaping holes in their logic.

    • Nintendo Knight

some “gamers” look simply need a reason to complain randomly tripping was fun and meta knight can be beaten with skill his fall save move can be countered easily that’s his weakness

    • Gila Monster

I think the general assumption is that Melee is some sort of fluke. Many elements that make it such a great fighting game are actually glitches or other forms of abusing the engine.

    • Tails the Foxhound

      @Nintendo Knight
No, tripping was NOT fun. It was wrestles control away from the player at nearly ANY given opportunity, even worse it balances the game in now way at all. It is NOT fun, this is a matter of FACT not opinion. As far as Meta Knight, no he has no real weaknesses in his moves, if a Meta Knight loses to anything but another Meta Knight, they suck, period. He is broken, like SF2 Akuma.

    • MadCrain

Dude, tripping is fun when you have friends, it’s funny and gives someone the chance to come out on top, you guys are talking like this is the most serious subject in the world, it’s a game, just chillax and enjoy whats in front of you. Plus, i’m sure the “fans” constant bithcing has caught there eye, they’ll probably fix it.

    • Tails the Foxhound

The fact that you said ‘fix’ proves how you really feel about tripping. It’s frustrating as fuck and you know it.

  • zeldahero11

I think this is pretty good that there helping so development won’t take as long. Plus we might get some characters like Lloyd (but not pacman).

    • zeldahero11

  • Lockjaw

Why the hell are people so convinced that Smash Bros. is going to “become” Tekken or SoulCalibur? It’s not even the director of either games that’s co-directing with Sakurai.

You know, Brawl had an ad hoc development team, meaning developers from various companies formed a sort of temporary alliance for the game. Brawl didn’t even really have a particular developer, and yet with Sakurai still being the mastermind, the game TRIUMPHANTLY delivered.

This is still going to be Smash Bros, guys. Sakurai is one to know exactly what he’s doing.

    • Captain Falcon

Sakurai knows what he’s doing? Let’s hope that he gets rid of his “mastermind” idea of tripping.

    • Lockjaw

      Bahaha. Okay I lol’d.

    • Nintendo Knight

but tripping is funny and gives some noob players a slight chance

    • zeldahero11

  • Tails the Foxhound

This is probably fan reaction to the underwhelming Soul Calibur V and Tales of Xillia (both content wise, not quality wise). However, Namco has so much fighting experience under their belt and Sakurai is always on top of the content issue. Also, Namco made a Smash clone of their own, Tales of VS (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pp6QSMsJ1iU) for the PSP. I have all the faith and hype in the world for them.

  • Bob Saget

You guys are acting like just because the Namco Bandai is gonna develop the game, it’s going to be like Tekken. Come on guys, to you really think Sakurai is going to mess this up? I’m pretty sure he’s aware it’s one of the most popular and loved fighting games in the world. He just finished Kid Icarus, so I think that was just his “warm-up.” I think he’s gonna go all out. Sakurai is the executive producer, he is only gonna let the game go his way. And I really doubt he wants it like Tekken. That would be so awkward.

  • Lemon

I am looking forward to what namco is going to do, I do not understand why people don’t want them on board, I would be happy if even more companies join in, mainly to shove in characters at least.

  • facetouch

As long as they get rid of the elements that made Brawl a party game I don’t care who helps make it. Brawl was fun, but hard to play competitively with friends when people with less skill could still win pretty easily.

    • TouyaShiro918

You know, a tip: If you read the Kid Icarus: Uprising Iwata Asks, you’d have found out that the WHOLE POINT of Sakurai’s vision for games like Smash Bros. was entirely that…or at least, I remember reading that. Can’t remember if that’s in the actual text or not. Cue rage.

  • link2nintendo

i am getting royally pissed off at the people who are saying: oh! namco/bandai is helping!? put it jin, or yoshimitsu!, or kilik!!

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!

Super Smash Bros. is a NINTENDO FRANCHISE ALL STAR GAME!!!!!! keep that in mind people. it was said in brawl that 3rd party guest characters would be kept to a max of 2, so first off, lets get this train of random characters off the tracks.

ALSO!! the 3rd party slots should be left to larger characters in the gaming industry that are well known like megaman, bomberman, pacman (likely with bandai/namco), even Crash bandicoot

BUT NOT!!!! Masterchief, or Ryu, or Scorpion or any of these grown ass realistic men, they do NOT fit in with Nintendo characters. I still don’t think Solid Snake belonged in Brawl simply due to the fact that he DID NOT FIT!! but i get it, he had had some history with nintendo and was begged to be put in the game, but i would have definitely welcomed Banjo & Kazooie much more because they look like they fit!!

    Come on people!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
[end my personal opinion] [end rant]

  • Aaron_m

I feel mean for saying this. No really….. I do. But there is just too much ignorance and stupidity on this page.

    • Rander12

Isn’t “ignorance and stupidity” what makes people human? Just saying; practically everyone is stupid and ignorant – some people just show it more than others. Then there are people with mental disabilities… Hang in there – some day, there will be a cure! XD

    • MadCrain

“The internet is a huge database where people can be anything they want, it’s weird they decide to be stupid” Read it somewhere, super true.

  • Ness

Even Sakurai thinks that fucking studio will miss this game up; he has to keep them under his thumb. I doubt he’ll be able to keep it from becoming a trainwreck though. smh

  • Baka

Sakurai believes in their capabilities, and so will I.

  • CrimsonalCore

“Knock off looking down on them with narrow-minded thinking.” Even I heard Knock means fuck.

“Fuck off looking down on them with narrow-minded thinking.”

    • Baka

He didn’t write it in English…

  • zorbo

LOL WTF nintendo one of your best most loved games of all time and you are now bringing on board namco to help you?LMFAO!!!!
namco are a disgrace and have you not learned since the 3ds was released all 3rd party games have been utter cack apart from capcoms!!!!
seriously namco will screw this up and no wonder they did not say or show anything at E3 coz they would have been crucified for announcing that namco was helping them!!!
If this does not pay off for nintendo then smash bros will be forever ruined!!!
thsi game is the one that EVERY one wants for the wiiu and 3ds so why are nintendo approaching it with such stupid ignorance?
As the saying goes if it aint broke dont fix it…..smash bros was never broke so why bring in an utter cack 3rd party developer to help?
you are going backwards ninty on this one!!!

    • The Fralin Boy

I feel its to speed up the production of the game. The game was announced last year so fans have been waiting for some amount of time for the game to come out. However, it will take a very long time with just Sora to release two games. So I guess they decided to bring in help. Besides, Namco has done many fighting games in the past and I’m pretty sure they’re doing things on the technical side anyway

    • Gila Monster

If it aint broke don’t fix it? Brawl was the very definition of “broke” in a competitive gameplay sense. Even if you don’t care about competitive play (I know I don’t), it’s still might be nice to have another company provide some input. Otherwise the series would stagnate. Just because something isn’t broke doesn’t mean it’s fresh.

    • AceOfBlades247

      Troll.

i am getting annoyed by the people who are saying: oh! namco/bandai is helping!? put it jin, or yoshimitsu!, or kilik!!

also, plz stop with the request of DBZ characters really!?? why??

    Come on people!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
[end my personal opinion] [end rant]

  • The Fralin Boy

I’m indifferent to namco bandai. But it will mean we’ll get at least one namco character, which is nice

  • toker

i think the same, namco must be on this project. its not at the level of a game just like ssb

  • Adrian12369

So you guys all complain. Then this guy makes one statement and you guys are all aboard now? Wow. I never complained about this but I’m getting tired of seeing all the people that were complaining saying stuff like, “well actually they’re a pretty good company. They made tekken. ” make up your own mind guys.

    • TouyaShiro918

Some were on the train, some jumped off of it. The trails are different on each.

  • Andrew Boyle

Sakurai knows what he’s doing. The Smash Bros series needs a little spicing up and this is exactly what Namco Bandai is going to help with. I’m actually very excited about this!

  • Soeroah

Woah. Most un-Japanese response by a Japanese businessperson I’ve ever seen. Is that really the translation or poetic license?

  • Pinkie_Pie

I laugh at people complaining about Namco to potentially ruin the new Super Smash Brothers series.

People should realize brawl already ruined everything what made the smash series so great.

Brawl is a casual bloated mess and im pretty sure any future installment cant get any worse then what Brawl offerd.

    • Ricardo

Shut up, you sound just like those die hard Mario 64 fans.

    • SmashPlayer

Don’t listen to her. She’s just being Pinkie Pie.

    • TouyaShiro918

Don’t tell me it’s the same person I saw back at the Freenode IRC chat that’s saying this…

  • Wondergamer

I don’t really get why they complain about Namco’s involvement. If anythign, the Namco team is quite talented. Besides, the Smash bros series was already ruined with Brawl following its removal of advanced mechanics, dumbing down of the battle system, slow, clunky and floaty environment, terrible character designs and movepools, horrible balance, tons of bugs, etc… Brawl was pretty much a demonstration of what “not” to do when developing a Smash bros game. As far as I’m concerned, Project M is the onlt smash bros game worth playing at the moment. If they want to get us competitive gamers back, they need to treat this game seriously and make a game that can be played both casually and competitively, like Melee.

    • Baka

That’s because Brawl was on the Wii. Because the Wii U is for hardcore gamers, the SSB for this console will obviously be made for hardcore gamers. Don’t go saying Namco Bandai made the next SSB great if it turns out that way. Sakurai makes the best of what he has to work with.

    • waluigi

really I hate people who complain about brawl. brawl is better melee in every way.

    • KING Z

      @waluigi, Coming From The Trophy

    • Beta

I thought brawl was amazing… Why people are hating on it I have no idea. It took what made melee good and made it great, the only clunky aspect of it are the clunky characters… (like ganon)

    • AceOfBlades247

      @Beta

      Ehem… Over Powered Meta Knight.

    • asapisaiah

@AceOfBlades247 If I can beat my friends playing as Meta Knight and can’t even kill more than 2 enemies in Cruel Brawl, I don’t consider Meta Knight “overpowered”.

  • Omarsonic9

    Sakurai PWNED them

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/marioluigiandyoshi MarioLuigiandYoshi

I would love to see Klonoa on the next SSB, because he hasn’t had any shine recently. Pac-Man would be ok though…..

  • Roy Lagendijk

Namco Bandai is awesome, and makes a lot more than just Tekken, Tales of is AMAZING. So everyone who talks crap about them, SHUT THE F*** UP.

  • black-leg jex

I think it’s a good idea simply because with two development teams working on smash it should come out twice as fast. If it was gonna take 6 years to make it may now only take 3

    • Ammnesiac

      Exactly

  • SleepyGuyy

Yeah … I thought Namco was an odd choice too … but then again, I’m an idiot.

  • smash guy

if anyone remember namco was nice enough to include Link as a playable character in soul calibur 2. i dont think it will happen but it would be nice if nintendo repaid them by letting one of their characters join the smash roster. if i had to choose a character to join them it would be Yoshimistu. i choose Yoshimistu becuz i remember him being in both soul calibur 2 & tekken 4 with almost the exact same fighting style moves & stance. i read that theres different incarnations of him which would be a perfect fit for him to be a different incarnation of himself in the smash bros universe. i can already see him doing his same moves & having the same stance in the game. i would play as him often. his final smash should be something awkward & weird to fit his personality

  • LuisKcBoss

There’s only one problem with Bandai Namco.
Now that they’re working with nintendo capcom chars have a lower chance of being in smash bros. Sonic Might get in for the sake of fanbase but if capcom,Sega, Bandai and Nintendo all had brawl characters that would technically cancel out project x zone

    • KING Z

      Cancel PXZ? Good.

    • TouyaShiro918

@LuisKcBoss – Oooookay…makes no sense to me but whatever =|
@KING Z – you do realise some people have been waiting for the chance to play Namco X Capcom for a long time? If Project X Zone gets localised people’ll finally get that chance…albeit with added SEGA and on 3DS instead, but nevertheless, there ARE people who want this game that aren’t from Japan or have imported a Japanese 3DS.

  • RequiredName

Sakurai made my favorite series of all time: Kirby. But he’s a professional. He has the privilege of making video games for a living. That right there disqualifies him from being able to impose his opinion on the masses on some silly social networking website. He and all the Hollywood actors who do the same really should know better.

As for Namco, are we talking about the company that DIDN’T localize all those Tales Of games on the DS? That Namco, right? Oh, snap. That’s called a “burn”, Mr. Sakurai. Maybe Mario’s useless FLUDD attack can cool that one off for you.

    • Belinni

I don’t see much of a burn there, we’re talking about Namco, yeah THAT Namco, the one that didn’t localize the DS Tales Of games because the majority of American gamers at the time wouldn’t even give Tales of Hearts the time of day. If it wasn’t for Vesperia being a cel-shaded JRPG on the 360 (which was rare at the time) the Tales series would probably still be in cult gamer status.

The portable Tales games don’t really get the love they deserve.

  • ESNSWAmo243

Hopefully we can see some Namco Bandai people like Klonoa, Haken Browning, Simon the Digger, Pacman, etc.

  • asapisaiah

I basically read that comment as “Knock that s*** off.”
    Way to go Sakurai.

  • Pit

    What?!
Sakurai to relinquish his position?!! Is he drunk or does he has snot for brain?!!

    • Pit

      That gamer has serious problem.

  • miiworld2

I read more about this. After that Drama Queen show, the gamer’s Twitter account got suspended in a hurry. I’m guessing the Namco fans went rabies on him and he committed… ahem… “Twitter Seppuku”.

Tell ‘im, Sakurai! Speak the truth!

  • BringRoyBack

The Smash Brothers franchise is not meant to be a ultra competitive fighter its a fun party game that is based around nintendo characters. It has been so successful why change the formula? Those third party characters were great but dont flood the game. I love dragonball z and namco yet my biggest fear is that the game will be changed and all these characters im unfamiliar with will flood the game ex. anime characters or obscure characters like in PS’s SB copy.

    • TouyaShiro918

This guy…that’s pretty much it, folks. Smash Bros. was NEVER MEANT TO BE COMPETITIVE AND NEVER WILL AGAIN. Get it through your thick heads, Melee fanbase and Fighting Game Community who doesn’t quite exist in this blog but over at Shoryuken.com who are probably all complaining in unison at this very moment!

  • jokergallagher

well it was said that they are helping production moving along.
so I would imagen that the creativity level is their and well be smash brothers as he well envision it. I think that they well just be behind the programing, model building and what not. I don’t see them having any thing to do with story, or how the game is played.
on a plus side maybe some Namco bandi characters might be in the game.
I think this well also speed up production of the game by a lot. having 2 BIG development teams working on the game. I believe it be shown almost completed by next E3
