Revealed: The list of NES games to be made available via the Ambassador Program

Nintendo of Japan has revealed the full list of NES games to be made available for free via the Ambassador Program. There’s a chance the games will differ between regions, but I think we can expect it to be consistent throughout the world. That’s just speculation on my part though. Anyway, here are the games:

  • Super Mario Bros.
  • Donkey Kong Jr.
  • Balloon Fight
  • Ice Climber
  • The Legend of Zelda
  • Wrecking Crew
  • NES Open Tournament Golf
  • Yoshi
  • Metroid
  • Zelda II: The Adventure of Link

    These are great games, but no SMB3? No Kirby?
    If Wrecking Crew and NES Open Tournament Golf were switched to those, I think it’d be perfect, but what do i know?

    I like these games a lot. There are some games I don’t really know about, but they’re good. I’m glad we got a variety. I’d be a bit annoyed if we just got Mario games.

      “Too much of a good thing” and so on. It’s got to the point where the world is drowning in Zelda titles. Then again these are downloadable’s so it’s not like it’s a particularly huge deal.

    If they’re the games for Europe as well I won’t complain as I only have two of those on the Wii Virtual Console (I was expecting to get a load of games I already had).

    A lot of games I’ve been tempted to try as well, like Wrecking Crew, Balloon Fight, Ice Climber etc.

    I’d imagine the golf game is the one that was just released as ‘Golf’ in most places as I think it was first party. Never played it, so it’d be reasonably cool to try it out as it was featured in all the old Nintendo sticker albums and official magazines that came out back in the day.

    Sick to the back teeth of Zelda stuff to be honest, but will give Zelda 2 a quick go at some point as well. Yoshi’s Cookie has never really interested me all that much, but maybe it’s better when you play it.

      3 . gta how long was it in between games its been a good 3 years at least since gta 4 and rock star has 8 gaming studios all of the world . they can make multiple games at great equal calibar ! 4. gta is one of the most popular games ever very open world and u have many choices of things to do . 5 . rock star is the BEST game company for console games . so comparing cod and crap theft auto ur a large turd . becase gta was around back in the 90′s and cod game around early 2000′s and shud NEVER be spoke about in badness similarly to cod .

      Hasn’t been a good a good GTA game since San Andreas, not to say Rockstar isn’t a great company (L.A. Noire/ Red Dead Redemption) but the GTA franchise is withered.
      CoD has always been a generic FPS, that could have come out of any Tom Clancy novel though.

      ok mentos man, theres a difference between each call of duty. black ops is made by treyarch and Modern warfare is made by Infinity ward thats the only reason there would be one a year but since I only play ones made by infinity ward theres one ever 2-3 years for me.

    Eh, not really excited to be honest. I’ve played Super Mario Bros 100 times and not many of the others look that appealing…

    Although I always did want to give the first Zelda another crack and balloon fight has always intrigued me.

    Sorry I’ve never really cared for GTA or COD. To give you a better perspective on my kind of games,
    Mass Effect
    Any Zelda game.
    Almost any Mario game.
    Dragon Quest
    Just to name a few.

      No, it not Yoshi’s Cookie. It’s a tetris clone were you have to destroy enemies and hatch yoshi eggs. I got the eupean Gameboy version (where it’s known as “Mario and Yoshi”, although that’s from memory ;-)).

      plus, you would think that with uprising coming out, nintendo would put Kid icarus on the ambassador list to show people where uprising originated. More people will play it if it’s free

      Give it a shot, just because the game is much different from all the others in the series doesn’t make it bad. But I could understand being turned off by the difficulty, if you’re not up to a real challenge.

      I had a gameboy advance as a kid and all the games I had were bad because nobody in my family ever gamed so the only good ones I had were mario and luigi superstar saga and mario vs. donkey kong

    Sure hope they give Super Mario Advance 4 (the SMB3 port for GBA) with the GBA games… SMB3 is as essential as SMB or LoZ..
    I like Zelda 2 and never finished it, but it isn’t a must have.. the only ‘must haves’ in this list are SMB, LoZ and Metroid.
    The NES has games that are much more interesting than these, so as always Nintendo is giving the middle finger to us, loyal costumers, even when it’s supposed to be giving us a gift for being loyal. The really cool games will probably be sold in the eShop, at exorbitant prices, and remember to keep your 3DS close to you, kids, because if it’s stolen or breaks, then that’s it. Buying another one won’t bring back the games you already bought, even in an age where you have digital accounts and can get your PSN and Live content anywhere, in any machine and… man am I grumpy today.

      oh, and one more thing: Balloon Kid is muuuch better than Balloon Fight, they could put Balloon Kid in the eShop and put another NES game in it’s place.. Ice Climber is nice but it’s kind of a drag after some time. Well, at least they didn’t put Popeye in the list… talk about a repetitive game..

    I used to love Wrecking Crew, not to mention that it has many levels. But… kinda think that Nintendo could pick other title to substitute it for this program. No idea about NES Open Tournament Golf and Yoshi, but Metroid definitely is a wise choice!

      Used to play that golf game and I have no bad memories of it. It could be nostalgia speaking and the game might turn out to be totally horrible but we’ll see.

    Not bad choices at all. I just wish some of these games had a little more replay value. Other than Zelda I, II, Metroid, and Mario, the other games are ones you can pick up and beat in a single sitting. I know that’s what the NES was about, but still. I would have liked to see a Castlevania, Megaman, or Mario II even. Can’t wait to see those GBA games though.

      @ABEzilla – Yep, Metroid is my all time favorite franchise as well.. I’ve played and beat every single metroid game out there( all of the primes on their initial release within a few days and even got the trilogy seeing as I played the first prime so freaking much it fails to work). I’m still excited to rampage through the very first one again.. That and metroid fusion.. Ohhh Baabbbyyy.. Also, this treatment makes my blood boil too. I’ve already celebrated its 25th anniversary by starting and ending the day with all the metroid games.

    I have the original Zelda on my Wii, and I haven’t played it more than once because of how insanely hard it is! I had always heard that Zelda 2 was a difficult game, but it this one I had to try multiple times before I could get to a dungeon without dying, and then I couldn’t even beat the dungeon! Surely Zelda 2 MUST be easier!!!

    I never expected NES Open! I love that game! I’m kinda disappointed with the rest f the games, though. But it’ll be fun to get a bunch that I’ve never played. And other games I wanted will probably come to the Virtual Console some time later, so I’m perfectly content :)

    Ok, now I expect a “and that’s not all; ambassadors will also be receiving an EXTRA 2 NES games and five, that’s correct FIVE more GBA games, which now pushes the grand total to 27 games!”
    Who can SERIOUSLY say that they are satisfied with this list???? If not for like 4 games, the list has stuff I would have never accepted for free while the NES was in it’s prime, so naturally I could care less for it now.
    *Covers eyes with hand, faces floor and begins to shake head in disappointment…Donkey Kong style.

      What some people would say- These are FREE games. SONY, or MICROSOFT would never give you free games. You’re lucky you got something at all!
      What I say- I am in full agreement of this. I am not satisfied with this list. Metroid is good, and Zelda II is okay. Everything else sucks. We paid a good $80 for these games. Some people are getting them for free! I feel like this list is ripping me off of my money. I would rather have my $80 so I could buy something I’d actually want. I like Nintendo, but if NOA doesn’t shape up the list, then I’m going to have to think about my wavering loyalty to Nintendo.

      If your “loyalty” is wavering because you can’t hand pick the FREE games you’re getting, then I doubt Nintendo would really care if you jumped ship.

      And just to clarify, everybody who is an ambassador is getting these games for free. I also don’t recall having to fork over 80 bucks for them either. Sorry to hear you got conned into a scheme like that.

    As for the lack of Kid Icarus, I expect that’s because it will be available on in Uprising (likely as an unlockable like the original Metroid in Metroid Prime was). If we’re lucky, they’ll release the GB game in the VC not too long after.

      That would make sense. I can see them possibly putting the original Kid Icarus on the game.

      We ARE talking about the head guy who made Super Smash Bros. and Kirby games formerly with HAL Laboratory as being the one responsible for development of this game–he’s known for stuffing nostalgic goodies in his games.

      We can certainly hope so.

    I can’t help but laugh at all of the kiddies who would rather have Zelda 2 than any other of the amazing NES titles, they’re going to be crushed when they play it.

    Pro tip: Zelda 2 is the worst game in the franchise (bar the Philips CDi games)

      Probably because yall couldnt beat it i’m sure. Zelda 2 is a phenomenal, difficult game. More nintendo games need a steeper difficulty curve. Their stuff, while good, is just too easy. It’s laughable.

    NES Open Tournament Golf? YEESH! That game is barely better than Golf. Replace it with Kid Icarus and we would have had a decent lineup. Well, maybe Yoshi should be replaced with Punch-Out!, but I think Punch-Out! should be a 3D Classics title.

    I called nintendo today because im having a problem with my club nintendo account and before i hung up the reminded me of the ambassador program. I asked what games would be available and they mentioned all 10 of the nes games and all 10 of the GBA games.
    I know they haven’t been formally announced but this guy let them slip. the 5 remaining titles include

    -Kirby nightmare in dreamland
    -Donkey kong king of swing
    -Mario tennis advance
    -Pokemon pinball advace
    -F zero GP legend

      Its a good thing we aren’t getting any of the DBA Donkey Kong Country games. The GBA versions were gimped and they were changed too much and Donkey Kong Country is one of my most favourite Nintendo IPs. Hopefully we get SNES games too so we can get the original DKC trilogy on the go

      I have to say that i highly doubt that nintendo would let a person spill the beans about the rest of the GBA games. But if in fact that those are the rest of the GBA games then i’d have to say well bad choice in some of those Nintendo. I will wait for a true confirmation from Nintendo. But if those are the true games i will only get Mario Kart and Yoshi’s Island. If we get another Mario game it should be Superstar saga and Donkey Kong King of Swing might be ok if this list is true. But Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga deserves a rerelease more then pokemon pinball advance or even way more then Mario Tennis Advance.

      So i highly doubt this list is true. Even since Zelda’s 25th Anniversary is happening right now. So it might be Minish cap or FS/ALTTP over pokemon too.Also i know if four swords got rereleased that it would have to be updated to support the 3ds’s download play but i would be ok with that.

      I just highly doubt that someone would let info like that slip so it is very doubtful.

    This is pitiful, no WAY this is worth the half of the price drop. Give me SNES games, not NES games.

    I’ll download these, and feel great joy holding my 3DS and dusting it off, and after 5 minutes, I’ll get bored, close my 3DS, and not touch it until the GBA games come out, at which I will repeat this same process, but I might get bored after 10 minutes.
