Did you think 3D was going to make the leap from the 3DS to whatever Nintendo has in the works for its next home console? I’m not sure exactly how that would work given that you’d need a television bundled with the console for that to be possible. Or Nintendo would have to target the device to people who own 3D televisions, which would be sales suicide.
But either way, Reggie Fils-Aime, the President of Nintendo of America had this to say:
> Glasses-free is a big deal. We’ve not said publicly what the next thing for us will be in the home console space, but based on what we’ve learned on 3-D, likely, that won’t be it.
And Hideki Konno weighed in his thoughts with the exact concern I mentioned above, but in relation to playing around with 3D content on the GameCube:
> It would have required consumers to buy a special LCD screen to attach to the GameCube to actually play. We didn’t think it was worth that investment for consumers, so it never came out.
Can’t argue with that. I am curious to see what features do transfer from the 3DS to the next Wii though.

David, I sent you an email but I didn’t see a reply. I’ve been a long time reader, and submitted one or two stories, could we exchange friend codes? Or are you rather exclusive about that? :P
stalker
Still trying to figure out how to handle friend codes. Hundreds of people are requesting mine. Not sure I how I can do it fairly.
Gotcha, no worries
Good. I dont’t think many people have the 3D TVs needed to have a 3D console. I know I don’t.
This only makes me more curious to what they will be doing.
I’d like 3DS to be the controller.
^this.
No
That sucks. Glasses-based 3D may not be ideal, but after playing games in 3D, buying a game system that doesn’t support it just seems. . . regressive.
People may not think so now, but I’ll bet this is going to be as big of a deal as the Wii not having HD in a few years.
Well, their next console better be HD. if not, they will have the lame excuse, which is:
“Not alot of people have HD or 3D TVs, so it would be a waste to make a HD system”
The market only sells HD and 3D TVs now, and alot of people have them.
One of the Japanese guys did say they won’t reveal anything about the next home console but rest assured it will be HD or along the lines – but that’s all he said. Having a 3D home gaming system would be ridiculous as everyone would need to pay £2000+ or $2000-3000 just to have a 3D TV to play it on. People seem to be confusing the handheld and home consoles as the same kind of thing – they’re not, they’re two different kinds of console and sectors of Nintendo.
All I’m reading is Reggie saying we shouldn’t expect glasses-free stereo 3D on stationary consoles. This is a no-brainer, as it’ll take 10 years or more for such TVs to be released (with reasonable performance and price) – even Samsung says so … and I do too, because I actually know what the deal is.
Supporting stereo 3D for your common glasses-3DTVs of today (and future), is also a no-brainer as it’s so simple for anything which uses 3D rendering. Obviously you can’t call it a prominent feature as everyone is doing it with no actual implementation effort. And just like 3DS, playing in stereo 3D will never be a requirement, it’s just a gimmick … which some appreciate and others don’t.
Also, when talking about gaming start differentiating between 3D and stereo 3D. 3D (mono-view) has been around for a long time in gaming.
That’s a good point. But I just assumed the context of the article suggested that the home console won’t have the 3D of the 3DS. :)
Maybe Nintendo should make their own 3D TV, which could turn to 2D just like the 3DS :p
This is the exact opposite with Sony; 3D on their console but none on their handheld. Baffling I say!
David, make a Review Section to post yours and let people review games on the comments. Just wondering.
Huh. I wonder what they WILL do then. Meh, you know Nintendo, always innovative…
I actually thought about this the other day… the next console most likely wouldn’t focus on 3D… no everyone got a 3D TV, and why would someone only buy one just for the next console? Lets wait for that 3D console til later… in the future… around 2050 xD
They will surely transfer friend codes and friend list.
I have readed something about some very smallsized HD videoprojectors so maybe they could but those on their console and you don’t even need a tv to play it anymore. In home you could use your walls to play. You just need small console like Wii and pair of wiimotes that you take and carry with you where ever you go and you just need to plug it somewhere and play. Maybe not yet because the pricetag could be “little too much” but in somepoint in the future. :)
maybe a 3D projectors?
that would cost even more than 3D LCDs!
OMG Reggie! I have been wanting a 3D Nintendo Home Console, and now that I have a 3D TV, it would be perfect. Now I cant! Xbox barley has 3D games, so im pretty much empty on a 3D home console. WHY?!?!??!?! :(
The ps3 has lots of 3D compatable games like killzone buy one of thoughs!
Didn’t Iwata say that 3D support is a possibility?
that means: “Nintendo does not comment about rumors”
