Nintendo undecided on whether to remake Majora’s Mask or A Link to the Past on 3DS

Nintendo is undecided on whether Majora’s Mask or A Link to the Past should be remade on the 3DS. This was revealed when Shigeru Miyamoto said that:

We haven’t quite decided yet, whether we’re going to do A Link to the Past, because there’s also the possibility of doing a remake of Majora’s Mask. This is something we’ve certainly been talking about and doing a little bit of experimenting with, to figure out which way we’re going to go.

But in the meantime, which remake would you prefer? And why?

I personally would prefer A Link To The Past over Majora’s Mask (Since it is my fave Zelda game of all time). It’s just that always having some form of a time limit stresses me out.

Id prefer majora’s mask, because LTTP already had remakes on gameboy advance and on the wii virtual console.
I found out that there was a french version released IN CANADA!!!!! (some amiracans find that funny for some odd reason)

That wasn’t a remake on the GBA. That was a port with added stuff. Both ALTTP and Majora’s Mask are available on the Wii’s Virtual Console. People seem to have forgotten about Majora’s Mask being on the Zelda: Collector’s disc which also had Zelda 1 and 2, Ocarina of Time, and a demo of Windwaker. So both ALTTP and MM had the same amount of re-releases.

ALttP already had a remake, but in all honesty, Link to the past had that feeling of where you felt forced to 100% it, like it was part of the game, I never played MM though. I thought Nintendo said they didn’t want to release a Zelda remake after a Zelda remake for the 3DS… Majora’s Mask looks like a depressing game, It would seem weird to release it to this generation.

If we’re talking a real remake along the lines of Ocarina of time 3D, I’d rather they go for LTTP. I can still play MM on my N64 or my Wii, the graphics are still good. But I’m too curious how LTTP woud look as a remake. If it’d just be a port, I have to wonder: Why not just release both for 3DS?

Don’t kill me, but I would like to see Link to the Past remade in a 3D world. I didn’t become a Zelda fan until Ocarina of Time so I never really was a fan of the top-down view Zelda games.

The most possible way Nintendo would choose to go about this is probably they’ll just make Link to The Past a downloadable game like Four Swords was and make Majora’s Mask the full scale game like Ocarina of Time. I can’t really see how Link to the Past will benefit from 3D…..

You realize Nintendo has prioritized making a new Zelda on 3DS before either of these are developed, right? Plus, remakes are made because there is demand for them. Most fans WANT remakes, because they are easier to develop (thus released quicker) and are great nostalgic experiences with new perspectives. Win-win. The only losers are the ones who refuse to buy it because it’s not a brand new story, even though such new games take priority the vast majority of the time. I only partially agree with you because of a few particular Mario games.

Well If I remember correctly, Miyamoto has been talking about a LttP remake for a while now…

and also for everyone who says LttP has been over ported/remade… MM got ported to the gamecube and wii… LttP got ported to the gba and wii…. so thats two times for both…

And LttP was my first game ever and favorite game of all time, I’d like to see it remade, maybe even in 3D style… I think if they did MM they would just upgrade the graphics to OoT3Ds style… but with LttP they would probably have to rework certain puzzles, and it would be interesting to see…

I’d be more than happy with Majora’s mask. LttP already had a handheld version, and since literally every official zelda game until OoT has been ported/remade for handheld so far, I’d love to see MM, especially because I’ve never gotten into it because of the lack of time to sit in front of the TV.

Ocarina of Time has already received an upgraded port, not really a “remake,” on the 3DS. It makes the most sense to give its sequel and sister game, Majora’s Mask, the same treatment. It’d be much more easy and economical for Nintendo to pull off, too, since a lot of the assets already exist. And fans will be pleased to get an updated version of it either way. I know I would.

If Nintendo’s going to actually straight-up REMAKE an old Zelda game for a modern system, then I can think of none more worthy than A Link to the Past. But if they’re going to actually remake it, from scratch, then they should really go all-out for it, and create that sucker to be a shining and amazing example of what the WiiU can do.

LttP is already on a home consol as well as a handheld, but doesn’t warrant a retail game, and as such, should be released only on the E-shop.

If we are talking about retail games, MM should be the right choice because:

1. Operation moonfall was a fan movement based after the idea was already mentioned, opportunist fans loved the idea. It wasn’t a random outcry.
2. Having a remaking a game over another for the sake of the original not being a hand held is stupid; it’s not even logical.
If they remake either I’ll be happy, since ALTTP is my favourite game and Majora’s mask is close second. So I don’t mind either way.

No, that’s what a PORT would be. A remake is only lazy in that they aren’t coming up with something totally original, but rather they are revamping an old game and updating its graphics. That still takes a lot of work, though. A lot of things would need to be considered.
Example:Nintendo3DS

No, they give a new generation a chance to play classic games that they wouldn’t have played before. They are easy to make, and are able to be released much more quickly than new titles. They allow fans of series, such as Zelda in this case, to play classic games while they wait for the next new game in the series, which is at least 1 1/2 years away, maybe more. They can be worked on at the same time as new titles, allowing Zelda games to come out every 1-2 years, instead of 3-4.

I love both games a lot, but I think it would be smarter to remake Majora’s Mask. It makes more sence, since it is a direct sequel to Ocarina of Time, which is already remade on 3DS. I don’t know, it’s just my opinion.

I’d like a remake of MM. I think more people need to see the true “dark” Zelda game.

Don’t get me wrong, Twilight was rather dark and creepy but MM is in a whole different league.

The NPCs are far more connected in their stories and a lot of the stories have the depression sort of feeling, so saving the day feels far more satisfying.

Just my two cents; I’m sure a lot of people rather have LttP remade because people say it is the best Zelda game ever. (Which I highly disagree with)

I disagree with Derpy as well. OoT3D wasn’t simple. The graphics difference between the original and the 3D remake is too much to be considered a port. A port would be something like HD pixels with the same graphics, but they did things like add reflections on the Temple of Time’s floors in the 3D version, as well as remodeled buildings and some things were designed differently.

2A: if you compare SM64 and SM64DS, the DS version was a REAL remake. Ninty added more stars, worlds, missions and minigames to enjoy what the DS had to offer to us. TLoZ:OoT3D can have betters graphics, but it still being the same thing as the 64 version, The only thing they added was the Master Quest, and WOW, you call it a remake.

You know, Derpy, you’re still wrong. SM64DS would be considered a remake, yes. However, you don’t need to add new content to a game for it to be considered a remake. A port can have lots of content added to it and it will still be considered a port. Also, OoT3D also had several other additions, though they were small they surely were there.

Ports tend to be almost exactly the same as the original, and pretty much always the same in graphics. For example, the Virtual Console versions of Majora’s Mask are ports, because they pretty much are the exact same game with the same graphics and all. Remastered can mean remake to some people, and seriously OoT3D is definitely fitting into remastered, at least. The whole “enhancement” thing we’re talking about pretty much IS what remastering is. They didn’t simply get the OoT game original and just add more pixels here and there. I mean, I think you really should take a good look at the difference of the Temple of Time in the original and the OoT3D “remake” or remastered.

@Enzo: ports doesnt need to have the same graphics. As you can see, Rayman 3D and Rayman DS (ports of R2), the DS one have ugly textures and graphics if you compare it w/the 3DS port.
Ninty simply ported TLoZ:OoT3D and added a few things. A remake is mean to make AGAIN a game and add a lot of new features that the old version hasnt, not just upgraded graphics that make temples or locations look better.

There is no way the engine used in OoT3D is the same as the original. It no longer falls into the port category, and is either a remake or partial remake. By definition it is NOT a port.

Let me elaborate on why I know it isn’t a port. A port would generally use a lot of the same data they used in the original to make the port, which would mean things like using the same engine or codes. It seems like you don’t have a lot of insight in this area, and maybe I can’t blame you since it is an esoteric kind of area. The N64 and the 3DS make-up of this game use an entirely different code, and are many generations apart. Even the DS beats the N64. The 3DS is something like 10 times more powerful than the DS, so that is saying something.

If OoT3D was ported, then they would have adopted the engine used in the original and slightly altered it to make it 3D and fit the controls of the 3DS. However, that is NOT what happened. The developers of this game actually had to make it all from scratch, with the original to look at as a rough draft. I was told that some of the physics of the OoT3D game were also changed, such as how high and fast you side-jumped. The game wasn’t “simple” in its development, and only simple in the fact that they didn’t have to come up with a whole new gameplay scheme and storyline.

I think it kinda sucks that alot of you are only saying Majoras Mask because “You never played it” and that is a decent reason to want to play it but that doesn’t make it deserving of a remake. personally I would go for Link to the Past but I’m not so sure really. I never really liked Majoras Mask as much as the others but its a great game and since they already put out ocarina, I think the smart way to go is Majora’s mask. BUT if they do remake Link to the Past in the way that majoras mask and ocarina are, that would be fantastic! It would be a whole new game in its self. I guess we just have to wait and see what Nintendo pulls out of it’s ass this time :/

IMHO they should do MM like they did OoT AND do LttP as a 3D classic, either for the e-shop, or possibly built into the MM cartridge. LttP to me would feel wrong if it was too far removed from it’s original style, but it’d be perfect for a 2D sprites with 3D depth of world type stuff. MM is already a 3D world game, and being built off OoT wouldn’t need quite as much work to update. Compared to OoT both games are a bit on the smaller side, so I could see both of them living on the same cartridge quite easily. I mean, on the GBA LttP they added the original Four Swords, on a 3DS card they could easily pull it off.

So yeah… if it was up to me I’d say just do both together.

I’ll take the third choice you forgot to mention, a sequel to ALttP. Although I would not say no to an OoT-style remake of the original, as ALttP is still one of my favorites. Majora….I would like a remake, as it would make cohesive sense with OoT 3D, but I’m in no hurry for it because I really didn’t care for it, so much so that the fact people actually really like that game surprises me greatly.

Oi Fi… Nintendo made the sky boring to fly in because there is no way to warp in the sky only speeding up and compared to the ocean in wind waker there is no BIG reason to fly to the all the islands unless you found the cubes on the ground and I’m sorry if it seems like I’m ranting, as for the items while they were fun to use in order to equip another you HAD to open the sub menu, it picked that up from PH and ST, and Fi was Navi on cocaine and the fact that you can’t speed up the text did not helpat all. While it was a good I don’t plan on playing it again anytime soon.

I see A Link to the Past as a “3D Classics” remake. I just don’t know why, though. But, if they want to do something new with it, I also see a remake of it with the graphics from Four Swords Adventures. I have a feeling that if this was to be developed, it will only be released through digital download from the eShop.

Oh, and we shouldn’t forget the original Zelda 3D titles too. :p

Majora’s Mask over a Link to the Past any day, It is my second favorite Zelda title, (first being Wind Waker and yes I did play Skyward sword), the atmosphere was chilling unlike any other game you could see your impending doom over head all the time (unless there is a roof in your way) which pushes you, bosses were fun and in my personal opinion the timer was perfect, not only that but unlike every other Zelda game you feel compelled to help the people of clock town and you are rewarded for collecting every mask with the fierce deity mask, there isn’t a reward worth getting 100 percent in aLttP.

Majora’s Mask is such an overlooked game and is one of the most original Zelda titles. I grew up with that one so I’m bias but what I would absolutely love to see would be a Majora’s Mask 3D to follow Ocarina of Time 3D since it is a direct sequel. I’d rather have ALTTP over MM. Majora’s Mask is too slow paced for me, it shouldn’t take me 2-3 hours just to get my sword and leave the city. In OOT I got to the first dungeon within 30 minutes, and the time system makes everything feel rushed and stressed, buts that’s just me. Alos, I’ve never fully played a 2D Zelda game so this would be a good start

I prefer Majora’s mask ( my favourite zelda) since OOT did so well and since MM is its sequel, I can’t see why not. Then again, both MM and LTTP did end up on Nintendo’s other consoles (MM gamecube + wii) ( LTTP gameboy advance and wii). And LTTP is a lot older and may need some spring cleaning….Nintendo could you love me and remake both? I have money to fund it….perhaps…:)

Simple solution. Get Grezzo to re-touch Majora’s Mask for the 3DS and then as the hype for that builds announce a sequel for the Wii U. Those Wii U prospective owners seeing the hype for the 3DS port will be intrigued and want to play the first game so more money for Nintendo in short. It’s a great game, best Zelda yet IMO.

A Link To The Past, it would require much more work and creativity for Nintendo to remake that into a 3DS game. It better not be some top down 2D side scrolling game just with 3D effects, that would be COMPLETELY lazy on Nintendos part an I’d be pissed. I want a ground up reimagination of A Link To The Past.

I think I’d prefer a remake of LttP, making it look more like recent handheld Zelda titles like Spirit Tracks. Majora’s Mask 3D would, in my opinion, just appear too similar to Ocarina of Time 3D to sell as well. I’d still love both, though.

I disagree. MM was really different from Ocarina of Time as far as gameplay. Unless you actually mean appearance, in which case you’re right the graphics would the same but I want MM over Link to the Past anyway. I loved Link to the Past but I don’t see how they can make it better with just 3D layers if they’re keeping the same graphics. I’d be more likely to want an LttP remake if they didn’t make it topdown. I loved the top down games but it would be nice to see it from a different perspective if they’re going to remake it.

Well In my opinion i would think that zelda MM would be best if remade for the WIIu, since they can add more features like maybe an easy access to changing masks or built in clock or even the tablet will have the termina clock or such. majoras mask wouldnt quiet fit the 3ds, i mean the 3d would be awsome, but it wouldnt have the same feeling you get when your rushed to do something, since the game is time based and the point is to play through but on the 3ds you can just simply close the 3ds and everything will be in the same spot and time. but if time were to continue while the 3ds is shut will be better but still…

but Zelda A link to the past is another thing, it would look and feel good on the 3ds. im not so sure why, but i just think ALTTP would feel better on 3ds than on a WIIu.

I would rather see Nintendo remake Majora’s Mask on the Wii U than on the 3DS because if it was remade on the 3DS they more than likely would just scrap the character models and other items from Ocarina of Time 3D. Now, Majora’s Mask would be pretty much the same as Ocarina of Time (which would be awesome), whereas Link to the Past could be one of two ways: Either the same top down view game, but with polygons and 3D and some nice camera angles here and there (like Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks); or remade entirely in 3D (which is quite unlikely, I think).

Why not do a part remake of Majora’s Mask for the 3DS that has connectivity to a Wii U sequel to the original? By that I mean there could be more masks added to the 3DS version, some exclusives in one version. SO you would have to own both systems or get a friend’s help to complete your mask collection. Perhaps there could be kind of Zelda-fied QR codes that would be played off as Hylian or some other ancient language in the Wii U version which would be invisible until you scan them with the Wii U tablet camera. You’d then whip out your 3DS and scan the QR codes to unlock some goodies. Maybe trophies for the 3DS version and mini-games/side-quests for the sequel on the Wii U sequel…if any of that is at all possible then awesome! Make it happen Nintendo!

Nintendo will be making the game that makes the most sense to (re)produce. There is already OoT 3DS, and while I don’t know the sales figures for it, it was highly anticipated and even had a limited edition 3DS console bundle.

This generation of gamers (I’m thinking Nintendo’s stereotypical target market of say, 10+ year olds) will be lucky to even know what ALttP is, nevermind believe it to be any good when compared with the 3D of OoT. (assuming Ninty don’t cock everything up and make ALttP 3D as well, which would take some doing to keep it ALttP if you get what I mean)

Meanwhile OoT was a lot more recent, more people know of it and all it takes to make the link to OoT from MM to those who don’t already know of it is ‘the sequel to Ocarina of Time’. Majoras Mask has a lot more potential, plus the fact that thousands of people have been screaming for it since OoT3D came out will surely make it stand out in Nintendo’s eyes.

I believe, and hope, that Ninty make a MM remake, but why not stick the original ALttP in too? Maybe have a free download code for it or something for the software store?

Ideally Nintendo could make an N64 Classics section on the eShop where either they are other developers like Grezzo update well-loved N64 games. Honestly, I think it would be cool to have a FULL 3D game. And I mean FULL 3D, like in OOT or TP, and if that doesn’t work, upgrade the graphics and stick it in the E shop for 10 to 15 bucks. However, I would like to try out a handheld Majoras Mask with better graphics. They are both really good games and I would be happy with either one.
