Nintendo reveals the 3DS XL, to be released on August 19th in North America

Nintendo has revealed the 3DS XL via the Nintendo Direct broadcast. It features larger screens as shown in the image above. You can check after the break to see a comparison between the current 3DS and the newer one with the larger screen. And, just for the sake of gloating, I’m happy to say that I called it.

It has been confirmed that the 3DS XL will cost $199.99 and will launch on August 19th in North America. This means it will launch alongside New Super Mario Bros. 2.

      I mean, I have all 4 DSs, and the DSi XL is by far the loudest of them all, and you can actually hear decent bass from it if you’re in a quiet room.

      I’m all for bigger speakers- just don’t like the circular design of the holes. Really like the design though- looks better than the original 3DS IMO. Only downside is that the PPI is lower now that it’s bigger. Not as low as the DSi XL’s is though.

      It’s not. The people who said that hasn’t a 3DS. The resolution is just fine, with or without 3D (our brain don’t let you see the diferences between resolutions).

      I think your confused? I do own a 3ds, and your right, the screen resolution is fine for the current system, it was optimized for that system. However if one were to double the size of said pixels, the lack of antialaision will become much more apparent, one of the reasons i could barely stomach the dsixl. It also lackes a second circle pad which means one of three things will happen

      1) the 3ds cicle pad will be fazed out 2) the 3dsxl will be fazed out OR 3) they will make a circlepad pro for the 3dsxl, making it bigger and more of a hassle. This sort of upsets me because i would love more support to the second circle pad, it makes game-play much smoother, but this may just seal the coffin on the second circle pad. lol put on bottom on accident

      But the XL version isn’t a redesign, it’s just a 3DS with bigger screen, Nintendo already said that they won’t do a 3DS with CPP. About the resolution, Nintento already show so many games of 3DS in full screen and it’s exact the same quality (experiment yourself watch a youtube video without full screen in 360p and a video 720p in full screen of a 3ds game, I hardly see differences)

      You do not understand me… you can’t improve textures in a video running in game just doing upscale. It will just improve the aspect of resolution.

      I’m not talking about textures, I’m talking about overall pixel size. If you increase the size of the screen, while maintaining the same number of pixels, the alasian of the polygons are much more clear, making an overall worse/ blockier image to the overall grafix.

      @Chaza2: I think the XL had a modification to sligthly blur the pixels to conceal the fact that Ninty just made the screen bigger but kept the same resolution. So, graphics ain’t a real issue.
      Personaly I don’t like the XL model, I prefeer the shinny and easy-to-travel-with standard model. But perhaps Ninty is gonna include some extra software on the XL like he did before…

      But you won’t notice that because even that 3DSXL has a bigger screen, it won’t be big enough to notice. Belive me, the increase was less than 1.4”, I bet that we will barely notice something worst.

      No one is asking YOU to buy it. Some people will want it and some people don’t have a 3Ds. The DSI XL made it obvious that some people need a bigger screen. Its really just a choice. Its the same exact thing.

      It’s not a redesign… it’s an XL version… just like DSi XL. If they put a second circle pad it would be a kick in the face to those that bought the original. This is not any bother to me, it doesn’t provide anything special my 3DS can’t do. There is literally no reason to be mad about a system you don’t have to buy.

    Sorry, but this will make the jagged-edges on 3DS games a lot worse. The small screen is a better option unless you have bad eyesight.

    Were there a 2nd analog stick, I’d gladly buy it in a heartbeat. But now I’m really not sure. That your whole system networks with itself turns me off to the idea of a second one. But who knows, maybe they’ll allow shared data. That would certainly open my mind right back up.

    Looks fine to me. I think that the addition circle pad and shoulder buttons were meant to be CPP-exclusive. Plus, I think that this was meant to appeal to more older audiences like the Nintendo DSi XL.

    I really want to clarify this. The Dsi XL has been destroying the original Dsi in sales in Japan. This 3DS LL is meant more for eastern markets then it is here. If it was tailored for Western markets it’d be completely different. But Nintendo is still a JAPAN company. Don’t rage.

        I think the design is worse and it looks really cheaper when you compare it to older 3ds. The hinges are the same as they were on dsi. So they could break. I think older 3ds is better quality.

    Tempted to bite, but I don’t have the heart to replace my Zelda edition 3DS, nor buy an additional system. Having a larger screen and better viewing angle sounds pretty nice, though… This will be a great option for people who haven’t taken the plunge yet. The silver and black unit looked sweet.

    I’m depressed by this.

    I was happy to toss my old DS Lite out for a new DSi, and I was even happier to toss out that piece of crap for a DSi XL.

    But I’ve got too much to lose by leaving my 3DS for the 3DS XL. My Colors 3D account, and most of my online information is permanently tied to the system, and I won’t be able to transfer that over to another system. ;-;

    I guess I’ll remain faithful to my Aqua Blue launch 3DS throughout the rest of its lifespan. I mean, I want the 3DS XL, but not everything can be transferred to it. T.T

      I think you can access your colors 3d account from any 3ds. as for games, you could probably transfer them. but friend codes/ other info stays with your old 3ds

      GBA: I had an original, and ignored the SP and Micro because it was good enough for me.

      DS: Had an original, it was crap so I tossed it for a Lite. Lite was crap, so I tossed it for a DSi. DSi was the worst system I have ever owned, tossed it for a DSi XL. I still have the XL. (notice a reoccurring thing there?)

      3DS: Had an original since launch day. Will most likely ignore the the 3DS XL, because the original is good enough for me.

    It is absolutely amazing how childish gamers are now. Nintendo announces a larger 3DS and people still complain. Its another option, and the 3DS seems to be doing just fine with one analog stick. Its a day one purchase for me… I am fine with one slider pad.

      I own 2 3DS systems.. Ambassador Blue and the Zelda Edition… I don’t feel like it went down at all to me… Did people feel like the DSi value went down when the DSi XL was launched?

      The 3DS XL is just another option put on the table from Nintendo. I will keep my 3DS’s and also but a 3DS XL…

    Why didn’t they integrate the Circle Pad Pro? It would be nice to have a system that’s like 3 inches thick. Density makes the system FEEL like a powerful device, rather than a cheap toy.

    Plus, if they did that, it would alienate the previous 3DS model owners, by making their system essentially obsolete. They’d pretty much have to trade up for the new model- just like what Apple is doing with the iPad, which is why they are making so much money! I thought companies WANTED more money.

    great. now i have to save up for this peice of crap. my 3ds screen cracked. so i called nintendo to ask for a new screen and they said they couldnt do it. i really dont wanna buy a new 3ds cause all my data will be erased. even though if i get the new XL, maybe there will be a transfer program. so mad at them

    It’s not THAT ugly. I personally think it’s decent-looking.

    Also, it’s clearly something present 3DS owners DON’T NEED TO BUY, or trade for either. I’m not willing to exchange my Cosmo Black 3DS for something new. I’ve got those 20 free games from the Ambassador program on my 3DS, as well as a year’s worth of history on it.

    Of course, I’m just speaking out because I treasure my belongings.

    Nintendo is whoring out. Making a new version that does not have any extra features rather than a larger screen and more battery power, which the 3DS can already achieve from 3rd party publishers, giving it a price that is much lower than the 3DS’s at launch AND pairing it with a new Mario game, and also having 99% of the software the showed at this Nintendo Direct on a 3DS XL screen. I really hope Nintendo will allow you to trade your 3DS so you can transfer all your data on a 3DS XL and get the new model. Which still I’m not really sure on the design.     Honestly, I think this is not a great idea. The resolution of the 3DS screen is pretty bad, compared to most devices out now. Stretching those pixels even more can’t be healthy.

      Nintendo DS (2004): 106ppi
      Nintendo DS Lite (2006) 105ppi
      Nintendo DSi (2009): 98ppi
      Nintendo DSi XL (2010): 76ppi

      iPhone first gen (2007): 163ppi
      Nintendo 3DS (2011): 132ppi
      Nintendo 3DS XL (2012): 95ppi

      So for anyone who’s wondering how crisp these screens are, there it is.

      Nintendo stated that the resolution will remain the same, despite the bigger screen. So we get bigger, non-stretched graphics. That’s awesome. The only flaw is a lack of a second circle pad.

      The biggest issue is that the competition has much better screens. The PS Vita has a PPI of 221, so the image is really crisp, and it has more than twice the PPI of the 3DS XL. I think the bigger pixels may effect the way the 3D effect looks- it will definitely make things more jaggy looking.

    Two reasons not to buy this.

    1. They also said it won’t come with a charger. You’ll have to buy it separate. Making the cost $210 or so instead of $200.

    2. Lack of second circle pad means it wont be able to have that functionality in games. It doesn’t fit in the cpp.

      Dunno about future 2nd pad add ons, but about the charger: i just read on gonintendo that it will be bundled with the system in USA, since it’s different from the current 3DS one. In Japan, on the other hand, the charger is going to be sold separately, and it is the same model of the 3DS’.

    Well. Can’t say that I didn’t see that coming. I did expect a second analog though(they OBVIOUSLY have plenty of space for it), and a screen that was at least as big as the Vita’s(for competitions sake).

    But alas, Nintendo goes with this ugly thing. You know the sad thing? I’m probably going to buy it. Just so that I don’t feel like i’m missing out on the best experience.

    I’ve read some stupid comments before, but never have I seen a full thread that was so consistently idiotic. Think about this for a second, something that is apparently very rare for many of you. If they would have made this with the second circle pad, that would have made the current 3DS obsolete. The DSi might have included some new features, but never has a redesign from Nintendo actually made games that work with the original system work better, gameplay-wise, on it, aside from a few enhanced but unnecessary features. Plus, if they would have included it, the early 3DS owners, many of which are complaining for some reason, would have been left out because THEY had to buy a separate add-on to get the same thing the later adopters got built-in. (And yes, you would have been complaining if they did include the second circle pad)
    Probably even more important, though, is that this DOESN’T AFFECT ANYTHING. If you already have a 3DS, then just don’t buy this. If you don’t have a 3DS, then all this means is that you now have an extra choice of which one to get.
    Also, how does this look ugly? I think it looks pretty good in my opinion.

    I knew this would happen…. ugh. honestly. if your gonna release a successor. why release an XL Soooo soon? isn’t that sort of a contradiction? the 3ds is good enough and doesnt really have defects besides the streaks on the top screen for closing your ds alot. the 3ds has only been out for a year and three to four months. I thought they denied the rumors of a 3DS XL…. I dunno. i just hate being suprised into things that couldve waited or save me money. this is disappointing. Sigh…. i don’t even like the XL design anyway. its no longer pocket size and the loss of the top dark screen = loss of style..yeah.. i’ll just stick to my standard 250$ 3DS. just like i did with my DSi…

    For those complaining about there not being another circle pad, did you guys think about the consequences? The 3DS community would have been severely divided. What about the people who don’t have the money for another 3DS or for those who don’t want the upgrade? The games made that would actually need the second circle pad would only be available to those who bought the “new” 3DS. For the ones who didn’t they would be left out and the rift would grow quite big.

    Yes it’s nice to have 2 circle pads but there are sever consequences.
    Do you ALL understand why Nintendo didn’t add another circle pad now?

    Seriously though, first they abused early adopters in Europe [UK specifically] with the price drop then allowed retailers to drop the price further than anywhere else [they could have at least made exclusive bundles] then they spat in our faces with a laughable Ambassador program giving out retro games that in no way, shape or form have the monetary value of £80 and they forced them on us [we had no say in the matter], all of which occurred during a barren spell of game releases AND now they announce the ’3DS XL’. What the heck for? The 3DS needs games not a pointless revision that devalues the original system before anything good has come out of it. What the f**k Nintendo? How much hate do you want? Watch when all the young kids grow up and become parents. I for one will make sure my kids are wise to the corporate machine that Nintendo has become. Art is no longer primary, it is secondary.

    This made my day, actually! My finace is visually impaired, and she’s been all about her DSi XL because having bigger screens for the same games makes them so much more available to her! She’s been unenthused by the 3DS thus far… partly because she can’t see the 3D effect, but also because it would be a huge step down for her in accessibility. This, however, might be a good upgrade for her, especially since it will do everything the older one will do while playing new games so she doesn’t feel left out :)

    But still, the only one you listed with worse pixel density was the DSi XL, which is not only in the same boat, but an entire hardware generation ago.

    1) the 3ds cicle pad will be fazed out 2) the 3dsxl will be fazed out OR 3) they will make a circlepad pro for the 3dsxl, making it bigger and more of a hassle. This sort of upsets me because i would love more support to the second circle pad, it makes game-play much smoother, but this may just seal the coffin on the second cicle pad.
