Nintendo explains why the 3DS XL was not shown at E3 2012

This is what they said:

At E3 we had very specific announcements that we wanted to focus on. We had a lot of things to talk about, and we had to decide which things were most appropriate for each method of announcement. E3 is just one of the many opportunities for companies to make announcements, and we’re always looking for the most appropriate ways to both inform and surprise consumers.

But that’s just how they’re spinning it. The real answer, I think, is that Nintendo wants more control over how and when they announce whatever they want to announce. The reliance on E3 forces them to announce things at the same time every year. That doesn’t always make the most sense though. As such, they’re “training” us to expect big announcements via the Nintendo Direct broadcasts. That means they can announce things when it suits them, rather than on any sort of external schedule. Or at least, that’s how I see it.

      Get with the times. DS has the specs of a home console from 1996 (N64). 3DS has the specs of a home console from 2006 (Wii).

      So what if DS is the perfect size? That doesn’t mean that the system itself is any good.

      4]gpu can be overclocked at more than 1ghz so think about it 3ds haters.underclocked at 400mhz
      5]its 3d think before you talk.
      6]1.5gb of flash memory.
      7]overall cpu of 3ds can be more than 3ghz if overclocked.

      ps vita:-
      1]4 cpus 4 cores running each at 1ghz it isn’t even cable of going up to 1.2ghz.
      2]cpu is same as iphone 4′s
      3]526mb of ram it can be more than that…cause its much better than ps3
      4]gpu is cable of going upto 300mhz..so think about it ps vita lovers.
      5]even if 3ds and ps vita will be hacked..people arent gonna download those 8gb to 16 gb sized games of vita..so 3ds wins
      6]cartridge capacity of 3ds is same as ps vita.
      7]over all cpu of ps vita is upto 4ghz so it sucks.

      3ds havent showed its true capacities and you people are just bragging about ps vita what a shame..but still ps vita has its own advantage.

      And here are Wii Specs:

      CPU = 729 MHz single core

      GPU = 243 MHz

      Audio = 5.1 Surround Sound

      Frame Rate = 30 – 60 fps

      Polygons = 4 to 12 million a second

      PS Vita Polygons = maybe as high as 33 million a second

      3DS Polygons = 15.8 million a second or more

      3DS Frame Rate = 60 fps per eye, in sync

      Are they just awesome with 7.1 Surround Sound Headphones on OR am I the only one playing in 7.1 Surround Sound.

      My Headphones are “PLANTRONICS GAMECOM 777″ and I can wear them for 11 hours in 100% pure comfort.

      I heard about these headphones on Yahoo Answers! And I love every second of it.

      Even Kid Icarus: Uprising is Awesome in all 7.1 Surround Sound its in.

      Because I don’t even seem to hear stereo even & it sucks.

      And have you heard about eyeio, that Netflix is going to use this year.

      We can finally get 3D 60 fps films with such great encoding on Netflix end.

      And finally get 1080p & 7.1 Surround Sound…..and that’s with no extra Bandwidth……but if we want both 3D (60 fps) & 1080p, than they are going to need extra Bandwidth at Netflix as well.

      Phase-relationship based pseudo-surround can’t be quantified as “7.1″ because “.1″ indicates a dedicated subwoofer channel, which is impossible, and “7″ doesn’t work because it’s still encoded in a stereo signal, so it doesn’t have any further discrete channels. This _does_ matter.

      Psychoacoustic surround is neat, and can be effective, but claiming 7.1 is nonsense.

      Actually, most of your evaluation is nonsense. Two cores at a given frequency cannot be added together to give a higher clock rate. Clock rates are fairly pointless to talk about anyway. Lots of stuff involved in efficiency.

      Using the potential power of chips as opposed to the actual possible usage.in a particular device.

      We all know who Willie is: that same crazy 3DS preacher who comes here once in a while to worship the super duper power of the 3DS.

      How can a person knows the range of clock speed by opening up his 3DS and looking at the chips?

      Anyway clock speed don’t determined the speed as much these days, its the architecture and number of cores that matters. Especially for portable devices, lower clock speed reduces heat and conserves battery.

      The DS earphone jack output was Surround…..i.e. Mario Kart DS & other DS games.

      The 3DS & Wii U both output 7 speaker sound thru their earphone jacks.

      The DS only out 6 speaker sound, which is still really good but doesn’t compare to playing Swapnote & Mutant Mudds & Dillon’s Rolling Western & Zelda 3D with 7.1 Surround Sound Headphones.

      With Swapnpnote, you here where exactly in front of you the message is being drawn as it is being drawn…..when you receive a message from Swapnote.

      And both Dillon’s Rolling Western & Zelda 3D, really show off how important playing with 7.1 Surround Sound Headphones is.

      Well, that’s my personal experience since I myself bought a 3DS and played with my 7.1 Surround Sound Headphones pluged in, since I got my 3DS in September.

      And half of all DS original games.

      And why do you think that half of all Surround Sound Headphones have an Earphone Jack Plug.

      But also half of all Surround Sound Headphones have a USB instead for their built in microne with headphone; which I don’t like, because I only need the Headphone without built in microphone, and also, I don’t like to use any of my 2 USB ports for Headphone, when I can just p,ug in both the earphone jack plug & microphone jack plug into their respectful jacks in my Windows 7.

      I have real need for my USB ports…..unlike other people.

      Number of cores definitly matter. I have a Laptop running a Dual-Core chip while my Friend has a Single-Core clocked higher then mine. In the end my Laptop responds faster and can do more since it’s able to Process two threads at once compared to his one.

      Although I personally don’t care about the PSVita’s Quad-Core abilities because I’m never really bothered by how “Real” a game looks. To me it still looks like a Computer-Generated image(even high budget CGI movies like Kung Fu Panda). For me what I care about is the Games and Gameplay itself, and for me the 3DS has the most Games I’m interested in(not to mention I’d prefer SDcards any day). Sure the PSVita has some games that interest me (Gravity Rush, Katamari) but that’s the usual situation of having to pick one Console over another.

      “Surround” doesn’t mean “7.1 Surround”.
      It’s phase-relationship psychoacoustic surround.
      It uses the difference between two channels to create the illusion of space/movement, not just in general content/volume, but with the phase differences of various sounds between the two channels.
      If it’s not outputtiing 8 individual audio lines or a digital signal containing the same data it’s NOT 7.1.
      I’m not saying your stupid here, but _I KNOW MORE ABOUT THIS THAN YOU BECAUSE I HAVE STUDIED IT IN-DEPTH AND SPOKEN AT LENGTH ABOUT SUCH THINGS WITH PROFESSIONAL AUDIO ENGINEERS._
      Not everyone feels the need to learn the details of such things, nor has access to people who spent 30 years doing professional sound work which included designing/building their own equipment.

      Headphones == two monophonic analogue signals.
      You can’t encode 7.1 audio in that for a number of reasons. If you _really_ want me to get into that, I could, but I’d rather not, as it’s boring.

      Adam, the new design doesn’t make the old one obsolete. There are a very good many amount of people who are satisfied with the original and would like to keep it at its highly portable size. It’s not a small group of people either, it’s a rather sizable amount of people who will keep the normal 3DS’ and probably just as many would try out the XL.

      Well it doesn’t exactly make the current 3DS obsolete. Other than the larger screens, the hardware is exactly the same. Neither is better in that sense.

      It’s just personal preference- whether portability is most important to you, or screen size. It’s not like the screen is even better, either- its the same resolution, just bigger. It’s a very minor tweak, if you look at it objectively.

      I think the original (aqua blue especially) looks nice and very well-built. Some would agree the original looks newer than the XL. That’s what Nintendo was going for. If they make a stainless steel model that will never break then I will buy that in a heartbeat because it’s functional for me but I’m not forced to buy the XL just to stay up-to-date.

      You could just take the SD card from your current one and put in the new one, assuming you still have it by the time you pick this up. I personally don’t plan on getting the XL, but my 3DS spontaneously stopped working after I recently dropped it ONE time. I guess if worse comes to worst and a new battery doesn’t work, I would have no choice but to get this. It’d be nice being able to hold off until a true redesign comes out though.

      you should. my brother said the first wii’s had trash hard drives, that was only meant to last a few years until it breaks down. nintendo doesnt respect first come first serve people. the people who gets stuff early gets trash.

      but, since i really want to play wii games again, i mean my wii is broken becuz we got it too early, im probably going to get a wii u when its released anyway. even though it might be $80 cheaper if i just wait a few months too.

      i dont think so. my brother didnt find that out until he went searching on how to fix a wii to read discs after we ordered and didnt work, a wii lens cleaning kit. the wii crashes on wii games easily, and when it plays gamecube games, it crashes maybe 15-20 minutes later. probably becuz gamecubes are easy to read. im pretty sure my brother is correct just becuz of this. and becuz it always worked fine until we got skyward sword which we still CANT play since christmas last year.

    I don’t like the way so many people completely focus on E3. Even things like the Tokyo GS became secondary events.

    If we really had to work this way, we would have news and announcements only once a year. Sounds stupid. Nintendo Direct already became a much more efficient communication tool. They really need to make European versions, though.

    Not really. I see it as more of a marketing strategy. The 3DS XL’s announcement doesn’t impact when it will be released. However, when you announce the 3DS XL earlier, interest in the 3DS will be slightly lost, meaning, less revenue.

    2 months is probably the result of whatever formula Nintendo is using to determine ample time for maximizing profits. -

      I don’t see how it’s overpriced. It’s $199.99 with now a better battery life than the vita, a bigger screen (think about it), and an upgraded SD card (4GB instead of 2GB). The Vita is $250 with no card (that I recall). I think the price is about accurate. I’m not saying the Vita is overpriced, by the way.

Now that this is coming out ( too early in fact ), they screwed the people who’ve bought the original and would’ve liked to buy this if given the option earlier. And trust me, Nintendo had this planned ever since they thought about making the 3DS.

      I think you’re speculating into the situation too much, and I understood perfectly well what you’re trying to say. The PSVita isn’t overpriced, though as its power does justify the price. The 3DS XL could have been planned from the beginning, but you can’t say they really were trying to do this. Nintendo really listens to their fans, so I think your argument is a bit too critical.

    My external battery gives me 10-15 hours, so the “extended battery life” doesn’t attract me. Those screens are sexy, though. Not sexy enough for me to get one at launch, but sexy enough that if it comes out in a color I want, I may snag one. For now, I’ll be fine.

    But like you said, David, it’s all about when and how they will announce the biggest things. But then of course, I don’t want Nintendo Direct to be the only place where Nintendo places their biggest announcements. Because it will only make fans expect too much from them; and when fans expect too much and they only get too little, they get disappointed and mad and in the long run, immature. So Nintendo Direct should be like drips of honey; and gaming conventions like E3 and such should be like big fat Christmas gifts.

    Expect something but don’t expect too much.

      Also I’m glad it doesn’t have another circle pad. If it did, it would mean a lot of new games would support it, and it would mean the current 3DS owners would have to buy the CPP. It means new games wont be using/relying on it. :) so I’m happy there.

    If you think the handheld you bought was a hard earned investment, you should have given it more thought that a revised version is bound to surface. The system is already over a year old and things are getting more competitive each generation.

    This revision is actually a move for Nintendo to get more Europeans to buy the system since the 3DS isn’t selling very well in that region.

    ummm am i the only one who noticed the rim (sorry the only word that popped up in my head) around the touch screen looks like it is bigger and when you shut your 3ds it leaves permanant marks on the screen…..imagine it on this screen and the fact that the marks are going to be closer to the center like shit…….did they not notice it???

    I’m really starting to love these Nintendo Direct Events. They get announced and I just want to be online to listen as soon as they stream. I love their we announce when we want attitude. To wait all year as a gamer for E3 kinda sucks. Yes there are other showcases but none like that. The Nintendo Direct before E3 showed off alot about WiiU. Nintendo can stream direct through their consoles or site to people who want to hear. The Nintendo Direct yesterday proved they are willing to drop big announcements at anytime. Who would have thought going into E3 hey they would have not mentioned Smash Bros or a new 3DS if they had news on them? I mean the 3DS is releasing just around the corner and they kept it under wraps. I love Nintendo, keep it up. I mean, who knows? In a month we could be talking about how they just announced how Monster Hunter 4 or Braverly Default is coming to 3DS in NA and Europe or a new Metroid or F-Zero for WiiU. I have a lot of faith in Nintendo to deliver but now on top of that I have this almost constant anticipation that as pleased as I’ve been with the 3DS hardware and software and as excited as I am for the WiiU hardware and software, on any given day they can outdo themselves.

    I prefer the small one.
    Why?
    1. (My opinion) It looks ugly.
    2. too big, not that portable.
    3. pixels will be stretched
    4. Battery is just the same
    5. The original ads looks better.

    I like my 3ds the way it is. Looks more sleeker n sexier with that black trim around the screen. The 3DSXL looks like a DSXL with all the 3ds functions. Just still waiting on a green 3ds in NA.

      Just turn the 3D all the way up on your regular 3DS & you won’t want a bigger 3DS…..i.e. Dillon’s Rolling Western & Ketzal’s Corridors.

    look everyone! It’s the revival of the DSi!!! :D but seriously, look how close the design is to the DSi and DSi XL. They must want it to look like the DSi XL for some reason, because they dropped a ton of the awesome design aspects of the 3DS.

    The DS earphone jack output was Surround…..i.e. Mario Kart DS & other DS games.

    The 3DS & Wii U both output 7 speaker sound thru their earphone jacks.

    The DS only out 6 speaker sound, which is still really good but doesn’t compare to playing Swapnote & Mutant Mudds & Dillon’s Rolling Western & Zelda 3D with 7.1 Surround Sound Headphones.

    With Swapnpnote, you here where exactly in front of you the message is being drawn as it is being drawn…..when you receive a message from Swapnote.

    And both Dillon’s Rolling Western & Zelda 3D, really show off how important playing with 7.1 Surround Sound Headphones is.

    Well, that’s my personal experience since I myself bought a 3DS and played with my 7.1 Surround Sound Headphones pluged in, since I got my 3DS in September.
