Everyone still knows what he’s talking about. Plus, it’s also easier to type “3D” than “dream drop distance”.
3D could also be inferring Dream Drop Distance. Which was probably intended (by David). What’s easier? DDD or 3D?
That’s probably why the title is the way it is, because it’s on the 3DS. If not, they could have called it Birth by Sleep… wait…
Joking aside, it could have been “Trials of the Heart” or something… considering it’s the Mark of Mastery.
It’s not that hard of a mental leap to figure out 3D means (1)Dream (2) Drop (3)Distance.
Aside from being the generic “Hey this game is in 3D!” it’s also a shortened version of the true name.

This game looks really impressive, but could somebody help me out though? Like a lot of people, I was really put off from the KH series because of all these frikin’ spin-offs…do I need to know what’s going on in the story in order to play this?
It looks really awesome with the TRON world and TWEWY…it’s really making me wanna break and get it when it comes out even though I would not have a clue what was going on story-wise.
PS…TWEWY character designs looked great in the DS game…but does anyone else agree that they look slightly off when trying to blend in with the KH atmosphere (still cool though)?
The only “Spin-off” Kingdom Hearts game is Kingdom Hearts Mobile…And the one for that Vcast thing years ago. The rest add to the main story.

Kingdom Hearts games are heavy on story, so to get the most out of this game, I’m afraid you’ll have to sink some time and money into previous games. I suggest KH 1 and 2, Chain of Memories (if you can get it) 358/2 Days and Birth by Sleep.
If you have the time and money, go nuts. Buy all the games. You’ll probably have a better grasp of the series than I do–which isn’t saying much… You can still enjoy the game without the others, but you’ll be very lost as far as the story goes. The revelations given in this game will probably be meaningless without the other games to reference.
Square Enix was trying to maintain the style of TWEWY in Kingdom Hearts (like they do with the Disney characters), however, TWEWY was very stylized so the transfer from 2D to 3D didn’t work as well as it could have (if they had a bit more of a waist they might not have looked so odd…).
Like many people, you assume all the handheld titles are spin-offs. All the games, other than V-cast, contribute to the main story line, and as such aren’t truly spin-offs.
If you’ve played Birth by Sleep, that will probably be enough. Days will help with a couple of characters, and Re:Coded is largely skippable apart from the ending and the secret movie.

Don’t judge a game by looks. This game series is amazing in my opinion. Although, you might wanna go out and get a PS2 and the first 2 games and a few of the games that cover events in between before you buy this one. You wont understand the story, otherwise.

That’s what makes the series so good. Where else will you see Mickey Mouse weilding a giant key-shaped sword and using it with a Yoda-level skill?

I started with the original Kingdom Hearts for the PS2. However, if you want to grasp the story right off the bat, then get Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep for the PSP. For the record, that’s the only KH game that I’ve yet to play.
I’m currently playing it on the PSP that I recently bought. (Don’t worry Nintendo fanboys, I still have my Ambassador cartified 3DS!).

That’s a Kingdom Hearts screenshot. Are you blind? It just has Final Fantasy characters (notice Sora on the right). That’s what the series is known for. *facepalm*

Also: Square Enix did a really good job with these screenshots–they’re some of the best I’ve seen for the 3DS.
I remember the ones from Mario Kart 7 looking somewhat pixelated.
They’re probably using the shots from the game on a moniter. Recently, (as far as I can tell) Nintendo has been using screenshots that look like they came directly from the 3DS screen itself. That’s probably why, although, it could be that Nintendo has just been using inferior technology/shots.
