The Nintendo 3DS can recognise augmented reality cards directly from your computer screen. This allows for the illusion of classic Nintendo characters bursting out of their virtual prison. And if you’re one of the readers who wanted me to share the MPO files then you can click here to download ‘em.

  • The Hero of Time

Those turned out pretty well! awesome pictures dude

    • KiroX777

hell yea they turned out well, i dont have a 3d monitor, but i still have those classic red/cyan glasses.

YOU CAN CONVERT THESE TO WORK WITH YOUR OLD 3D GLASSES HERE
      http://www.stereoscopynews.com/download/software/654-mpo-toolbox.html

download it and extract the first 2 files and the exe (MPO2ANAGLYPH) then just drag these .mpo files to the exe and it will create the red/cyan version.

  • cobanermani456

Wow, this is awesome. Just imagine if you had a huge Mac! You could have something ginormous popping out of your screen! lol

    • Michael

or if you had the wii rbowser on a 80 inch tv then theyed pop out of your tv!

  • Nick

Thanks for posting the *.mpo files!

  • http://aldowynsmusings.tk abujaffer

I’m surprised they work on a computer screen; however, I think it’d be nice if you printed out a massive AR card. Someone made a life-sized Mario by printing off 4 pages of one AR cards he put together. I’d like to see you do that. :D

  • 3DS=epic

that sounds pretty cool do they have seperate effects for the character when you play with it on the computer or is it just the same as the normal effects

  • kenneth

sweet hey you should go around outside and takes some 3d pictures of japan of the sights then upload the .mpo files fun!

    • Nupalupe

      hes not in japan anymore

    • http://aldowynsmusings.tk abujaffer

That’s what he wants us to think.

    • Coki

oh boy then im using a projector! can u imagine a huge ass Mario!

  • rod

Wow that’s awesome! The 3DS IS epic. I can’t wait to do this on my computer screen! XD

  • james_bond0014

also try this with target shooting i have a 60 inch sony tv connected to my pc ps3 and wii..its gonna be epic lol

  • Dave Brzozo.

Cant wait to do this on my iphone :P

    • Scizor

That’s actually a really good idea! Have all your Nintendo characters stomping around on Apple products!

  • Ryan31394

Hey, could somebody please set up the .mpo files to be used with red/blue anaglyph glasses?

  • Sumwheat

    Thanks for the MPOs^^

if you put the AR cards on ur cellphone/ipod, make sure it doesn’t shut off the backlight(for my ipod I have to turn down the brightness cuz it wont always read the card)
you can play AR in the dark, and not have to carry around the paper cards and keep them safe.
tis what I do when I’m doing nintendog competitions at 4am XD
and can show people on the spot AR games.

awhile back after I took a pic of kirby drawing(like the first pic) there it looks like hes drawing ON the circle, but change the angle and you can tell he’s drawing a “boy” kirby XD

  • Matt

if you lose your cards, you could download these images on an iphone and play them from there. kinda more reliable compared to using cards themselves i think…

  • Stephon

i was Grand Central in New York today to play the 3ds. IT WASS PHUUCCKIIINNNGGG AWSOME!!!!!!

    • Sam A.

Is there an age limit and was there a huge line?

  • Jbluna

Does the camera HAVE to be infocus w/ the ar cards

    • Nupalupe

      yes, from what ive see

  • http://otakubanzai.blogspot.com/ Cliff

thanks for uploading the pictures I’ve been wanting to play with this format ever since i first read about it. I normally just use photoshop to make my 3D pictures http://otakubanzai.blogspot.com/ as seen on my blog. but i found a good program that can turn the .mpo format into different types of 3D views. link at the bottom. I will be looking into other ways of converting the pictures.

  • butterbiscuit

Curious. If you take the AR card out of the 3DS’s view after the figurine has showed up, will the figurine disappear, or will it remain?

    • Sumwheat

The screen will do static and nothing will be shown and it will as u to put the card back into the shot, after you do, ull get static again and the figure will be back

    • David Turnbull

It’ll disappear. The AR card needs to be in the shot.

  • Jerry

this is awesome but one question can people make custom AR cards for 3ds

    • Nupalupe

no, the games are programmed on the 3DS not the card and what i find obvious is that its programmed to respond to Only nintendo cards

  • http://otakubanzai.blogspot.com/ Cliff

ok i just did a quick conversion of the files. this is the crossed eyes view. cross your eyes till there is a 3rd picture in the center. then more closer or farther away as needed. thats it. have fun.

    http://www.fileserve.com/file/KvYmWhM

    • http://aksoftware.weebly.com DaManWitDaPlan

      *field your eyes

lol this is the opposite of crossing. If you wanted to make them for crossing your eyes, you needed to flip the 2 images.

  • Kardibask

So the 3d camera can take pictures of the 3d effect on other 3ds’s?

  • George Tirebiter

    Wow, those look like crap!

Actually, they’re too awesome for words, but I just wanted to point out how quickly many people will go from saying that about the camera by itself to saying things like “OMG! Those look amazing!” about these shots.

Of course a lot of that has to do with the fact they’re coming out of the freaking screen, but still.

    • George Tirebiter

I just need to reiterate once more: This is best thing Nintendo could’ve possibly done with AR, along with Graffiti. If only they combined the two…

  • Simon Eriksson

I actually was thinking about doing this, way before this was posted Haha :D
Nice to see it´s actually working :>

  • Kirbyfan

  • Dragons_Slayer

These photo’s look fantastic in 3D (cross-eyed) Thanks for sharing the .MPO’s :D

  • http://www.youtube.com/liamrproductions Liam

That’s awesome. Can’t wait to try it out with my iPhone.

  • Wootah

With the nvidia 3D photo viewer and my shutter glasses these things look very cool.

Yet I think that the 3D is somewhat extreme (nvidia calls it depth). I think it’s a little too hard to focus on, which can probably be the cause of eye strain.

I usually set the depth a lot lower in games, it has the same effect but allows your eyes to focus on things more naturally. That way I can play a game for hours in 3D without noticing anything :)
The same thing in a good configured 3D movie, it doesn’t give you eye strain.

  • test

does the 3d-slider have any effect on the depth of the 3d-pics ?

    • milky

I think it only controls the screen not the camera. That way you can view any 3d image and choose your depth at any time

  • bananaoomarang

could you make some massive prints of the cards to have massive miis and mario rockin’ out in your house, in 3D.

  • Ap0c NL

    Thanks for sharing! :)

  • WingedOne

Thanks for sharing the .mpo files. I used StereoPhotomaker to convert them into Anaglyph format so I could get an idea of what they look like in 3D.

My favorites are the picture of the Krusty the Clown plushy and the picture of the window sill.
