Something felt strange about those six different augmented reality cards that were revealed in GAME’s unboxing of the 3DS. It just seemed to good to be true that there would be five games based around classic Nintendo characters. And it is too good to be true. As clarified by a NeoGAF user:

> The ? card launches the program in AR games. You’re then given six options for six games. One of those games places Miis into the real world. You can move them around with the stick and change their pose with face buttons. Sadly there’s no animation – it’s like static statues. You can also move around in real space to change the angle of the look you have on them, and then take photos of the Miis. There’s also a program which lets you do the same. All those cards do is bring Samus, Kirby, Mario etc out into the world. Again – static statues, and you can change their pose with the fact buttons. You can also take pictures. I managed to get all the cards/characters to appear at once, which I thought was quite cool. There’s some cool sound effects from their games when the characters appear, too.

So yeah, it’s just for taking pictures of posable Nintendo characters. That same user also shares that one of the AR games we are yet to hear anything about is “basically a Billiards style game. It warps the ‘terrain’, puts obstacles in your way, and then you’re positioned behind a ball. You move around the ball to aim, and hit A to hit the ball – you have to try to hit a target that is around/past the things in your way.”

  2. Elfteiroh

I said exactly this in a comment of the last post! Yeah for me! xD

  3. Adolfo Sanchez

Second and does that mean each 3ds will be packed with 1 AR card that is different from all other AR Cards

  4. james_bond0014

David, whats ur most anticipated game and least for the nintendo 3ds. And whats the feature that u are most exited for? thnx

  6. Brendon

Man…that’s a little disappointing. Oh well, I should still have fun taking picture of the various characters. So, we have Target Shooting, the thing where you pose characters for pics, and the billiards thing. Would this person care to ellaborate on the other 3 AR games??

    1. Technically the taking pictures thing, isn’t a game!So i suppose we know about 2 AR games until now,and we should here about 4 more.Don’t forget,it is called AR games, not AR photo shoot, but then again the photo shooting is starting from the AR games,so who knows?

    2. Total911

There’s the dragon Battle AR game.

  7. George Tirebiter

I’m still glad that the characters can be used at all. I only hope these extra cards aren’t a limited-run thing.

  8. Chris

wheres the videos!! i wanna see mario AR

  9. Doggy

Still…it would be fun to move Mario onto your dog…Ps:David it would be awesome if you responded to this…Big fan of you and the 3DS

  10. Peter

Yay I can put Pikmin on my shoulder!!

  11. Jack

This is a cool little idea I think!

  12. theguy87

I bet that you’ll be able to buy other AR cards and some, most likely, will have special little games in them…. I still am not giving up on a mario game in the real world!!!

  13. drwill439

Well, at least its not a complete letdown. I can make believe i have SSB AR by posing the charcters right with a little photoshop for the items.

  14. So can you place AR cards in the same scene? Like Link with the dragon scene, just standing off to the side? :D

But I am pretty disappointed. Guess I shouldn’t work myself up over something like this again.

  15. james braselton

hi there go too wakia-pedia web site they said there will be 6 ar cards may be if enough reqest they will release thousads of ar cards like pokemon cards

  16. gamma064

  17. shockwave

16th! 17 if you count replies.

This is pretty cool. I can’t wait to see Mario, Link and Kirby together on my kitchen table on a plate with a knife nearby. Mmmm, nintendo.

    1. Total911

Or take photos of you about to eat them, and (If there’s a pose for this), Every character frantically running away from you. :3 I’m a bad person.

  18. [...] This post was mentioned on Twitter by GEEK-MASTER and free3ds, David Turnbull. David Turnbull said: More details about the AR games (and another mystery solved) http://goo.gl/fb/mYyfL [...]

  19. AR man

So David, when you get your 3DS will you post a video of these AR statues? I really want to see what they look like.

    1. David Turnbull

Yeah, lots of videos like that will be coming. :)

    2. AR man

Cool look forword to it!! :)

  20. Amy

    It’s still pretty neat

  21. Dr Fell

hey that still seems kind of cool but would be nice if they had animations! :-D

  22. Mr M.C. ClapYoHandz Willy Waka Wonka Flocka (aka Benjamin BootyCrisp)

the “?” card pops out a Mii AND is a target shooting game. so the character cards pop out a character for pictures AND might have a game. if they were JUST for pictures, they would have added more popular Nintendo characters like Donkey Kong, Yoshi, Pikachu and maybe even a Pit. so yeah, theyre most likely for character pictures AND games!

    1. Mr M.C. ClapYoHandz Willy Waka Wonka Flocka (aka Benjamin BootyCrisp)

      *Pit = Kid Icarus.

ALSO, if they were just for pictures, the artwork of the characters on the cards would be different. they would have used better artwork (like for the Mario and Kirby one). and people would rather have OoT Link instead of Toon Link.

    2. Mr M.C. ClapYoHandz Willy Waka Wonka Flocka (aka Benjamin BootyCrisp)

and that one Nintendo guy said he hopes that the AR card games are as good as Wii Sports. the target shooting looks very fun, but short. and that alone wont stand up to Wii Sports. the 5 characters cards are most LIKELY for character pictures AND games!!! :)

    3. Mr M.C. ClapYoHandz Willy Waka Wonka Flocka (aka Benjamin BootyCrisp)

(hopefuly Nintendo puts more AR cards in games such as Kid Icarus, Paper Mario, Star Fox, ect. they would let you have more character pictures and a mini game. that would be a smart move of Nintendo and would be soo cool to have those cards)

  23. Pikmin Fan

It should be really fun taking pictures with the pikmin one outside.

  24. Red Deer01

I find it hard to believe I mean “The ? card launches the program in AR games. You’re then given six options for six games.” which initially makes you think that there are 6 games attached to 1 card. but then it goes on to say “I managed to get all the cards/characters to appear at once” and it kills the awesomness.

Was totally hoping for a top-down Toon Link Zelda game with an endless enimies onslaught complete with a highscore counter and bonus weapons or something.. Still i’ll wait for the previews.

  25. Schultz38

Sad :( But I’ll still have a good bit of fun with these, and showing them off to friends :D

  26. Ikki

    I knew it

  27. sammaster9

kind of a bummer that they’re just statues, but I’m happy nonetheless :D

  28. Kirbyfan

YES, Kirby in AR!:D (Kirby is my #1 favorite Nintendo Character <3)

  29. Huh. Maybe I can take a photo of Nintendo characters chasing Mii. :)
