Wired reported that Shigeru Miyamoto was retiring from his current role at Nintendo and would from here on out only pursue smaller projects. As it turns out though, this is incorrect. Here’s a new statement from Nintendo:

Video game designer Shigeru Miyamoto’s role at Nintendo is not changing. He will continue to be a driving force in Nintendo’s development efforts. In discussing his priorities at Nintendo in a media interview, Mr. Miyamoto explained how he is encouraging the younger developers at the company to take more initiative and responsibility for developing software. He attempted to convey his priorities moving forward, inclusive of overseeing all video game development and ensuring the quality of all products. Mr. Miyamoto also discussed his desire to pursue fresh ideas and experiences of the kind that sparked his initial interest in video games.

So yeah, that’s good.

  • Bill

There’s a few conflicting reports though. I wouldn’t be surprised if he does end up retiring.

    • Read me

      Sham on you

    • Evan

smh @ Nintendo for delaying his retirement like they delay everything else.

    • Matt

      This should clear things up:

More clarity on Miyamoto’s role comes courtesy of Bloomberg Japan.

According to a Nintendo representative, Miyamoto will be focusing more of his attention on training younger developers. This will result in him “reducing his involvement” on game development, but he will still focus in on major titles. Miyamoto is not leaving his current post as the director and manager of EAD.

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE REST OF THE UPDATE? ._.

  • 3DSNERD

Miyamoto is awesome. good thing hes not retiring right now!

    • http://chibi-creations.blogspot.com/ ChibiKage89

Yes he’s not finished just yet. This will give me more time on that cloning device so I can create my own Miyamoto army to create the ultimate video game. One that will make every other game like Super Mario Bros. 3 and Halo look like they should be shit on by the Angry Video Game Nerd.

  • g-man

don’t you just feel like hugging that face right now?

    • Belinni

No, but I only feel this way because I am, in fact, not a face huger.

    • Xarreno

Heh, huger? I guess your not great at enlarging faces of people like everyone else can.

  • http://www.youtube.com/jeftenintendonerd JefteNintendoNerd

Dude.. Why would he quit? That would make him stupid and Miyamoto isn’t a dumbass.

    • Supa64

Maybe after 20 something years of working, he got tired of it? Making video games can be stressful.

  • knightboy

i was “no mr. miyamoto you cant retire!” and then i saw this and was like ” whoa he changed his mind in less the 24 hr?” im happy hes staying :)

    • Belinni

He never said he was retiring in the first place! It was just an error on a news site!

  • http://brotherlylover.blogspot.com Brandon

Of course Nintendo would respond to this pronto. What a major PR and investor problem that would be otherwise.

  • Rift

I’m glad hes not retiring, what a relief. Miyamoto is the best! :D Go Nintendo!

  • Zed

This just made my morning :D

  • nintenaxi

Glad it’s not true , but remember it’s just not true for now :-(
Sooner or later there won’t be a Miyamoto anymore, so I’m glad they are giving lots of his responsibilities to others gradually, because then he can still check on them while he is still here.
Until they day comes when he finally gets he’s well deserved retirement: BRING ON DE GAMEZES!!!

    • Pete41608

as long as we remember The Legend of Miyamoto-San, he will ALWAYS be here.

May be off topic but question.
Is Flipnote STILL being released?! XD
It’s been far too quiet :<

    • Mr Guy

I’m pretty sure it is still in development. Nintendo has been doing a lot of things lately, and Flipnote, unfortunately, has fallen off the radar, but i highly doubt Nintendo would kill off a game that was so ridiculously successful on the DSi.

  • Pete41608

he can’t retire til we hold Mario HD and Zelda HD in our hands!! ITS A BEAUTIFUL MORNING

  • ellio

    How old is he?

    • Matt

      59

  • vdoggie

    Damage control

  • Matt

Although he’s not “retiring” (which the other article also said). Will he still at least have an influence on the big franchises? If not that kinda sucks but still good that he’ll be able to make his own games, seeing as he’s created many franchises over the years.

  • Charlie

I hear he’s giving away a golden ticket, stashed in some lucky sods copy of mariokart 3ds, the winner gets a tour of nintendo hq! …sounds fishy to me!

    • mdlmemorybank

      lol

    • Eragon Fowl

He is! where did you hear this?!

    • Battlefrog

A Willy Wonka movie Nintendo style. Now, I’d pay good money to see that!

      Don’t use 3D if you’re under six

    • Xarreno

^Not true. Nintendo put up the restrictions about 3D for children for safety precautions, but doctors have proven it to be not true. They actually confirmed that the 3DS is helpful in finding eye disfunctions in children. That’s nice to know isn’t it?

  • kenneth

thats good because its hard to see Nintendo without him :-)

  • Mike S

Hey guys :) I’m posting from my iPhone, Disney is AWESOME, see you all on Sunday when I get back :) Also its good to hear miyamoto isn’t retiring :)

    • http://www.en.gravatar.com GameManiac

I remember going to Disneyland (the one in Los Angeles, California) with my band class.

It was this “every 2 years” event, where the entire band and orchestra class goes there for four days. I played the trumpet there, and we played six songs during our concert.

the songs we played were Mickey Mouse Club March, select pieces from The Lion King, Bohemian Rhapsody (Queen’s song), Aztec Fire, and a couple of others that I forgot.

We ALMOST played the orchestral theme of the first Kingdom Hearts game, but never did.

    • Eragon Fowl

Are you going to Epcot? I spent three hours in japan at epcot.

    • Mike S

I always go to all the parks, so yes :) right now I just got off Tower of Terror and I’m waiting for my brother and cousin to get off Rockin Rollercoaster. I didn’t on on cause I don’t like going upside down :(

    • Mike S

      *go on

    • Eragon Fowl

      Tower of terror was amazing.

    • Ruīji !

Wha?! You don’t like crazy roller coasters, I LOVE them! =D It is great news too that he’s not retiring!
I hope you have a great time at Disney and make sure not to get stuck in the “Middle of No Where” especially at night…

    • Mike S

I o on Rollercoasters, just not upside down ones.

    • http://www.NintendoWorlds.net TurboPikachu

I’ve been to Disney World in Florida, and I have to say my favorite ride by far is Space Mountain. Nearly complete darkness aside from a strobe light here and there, tunnels with sci-fi-styled light patterns, and hairpin turns, it makes for a really fun ride.

    • Mike S

My favorite coaster is Expedition Everest :)

  • http://www.sundaughterpress.com Shroomgirl

What a great guy Miyamoto-san is. The other exciting news is that he is going to be working on some special projects of his own. I can’t wait!

    • Battlefrog

Hooray!!! Can’t wait for some new IP’s from Miyamoto!

  • http://hybrilynx.net/ Hybrilynx

  • http://chibi-creations.blogspot.com/ ChibiKage89

yay. Can’t have Nintendo without Miyamoto-Sama.

    • Mike S

Eventually he will die, and to me, it would be like when the Disney company lost Walt ;( I just hope someone good, and knew how he did things takes his place…….

  • Gary

This is off topic but i had a question. so can you only downlaod demos from nintendo zone? or can you also do it from the e-shop?? someone please answer

    • http://gravatar.com/elffcc Big E

eShop and Spotpass only (As far as I recall)…Maybe Nintendo Zone…

  • http://gravatar.com/elffcc Big E

I heard EVERYONE (But me) in the world freaked out over the news of him retiring…Is that true?

  • Eragon Fowl

Where are my demos promised today?!

  • http://en.gravatar.com/miiworld2 miiworld2

Oh, thank you Lord. Phew… xD

  • oh…

It was pretty obvious that he wasn’t retiring to begin with. Just for the pure fact that he has been preparing Pikmin 3 (WiiU) for forever now. Why would he retire before at least seeing this last project hit the shelves… Maybe not, maybe I’m wrong.

  • Free of Birth

    What a relief.

  • Kayriss

    Happy happy, joy joy

  • Ark

Obviously paid him a lot of money.
