In a preview for Animal Crossing 3DS, it has been revealed that, as you take on the role of the mayor of your town (rather than being a mere resident as in previous games), you’ll be able to decorate more of your village, with the specific mention that you can “add benches or street lamps to brighten the place up and make your villagers happier.”
But, because “being mayor can be a daunting task,” you’ll be accompanied by a secretary throughout the course of the game. She’s a dog-like character that’s new to the series who is described as “clumsy” and will point out parts of the town that look good, or may need work. The first thing that pops into my head is that damned Microsoft Word Paperclip, but supposedly, “chatting with her may be one of the game’s highlights”.
It’s also confirmed that it will be possible to “design every aspect of your house, right down to the design of the mailbox and the colour of fencing outside.” In terms of interior design, you can change your furniture by taking it to a special upholsterer shop, which allows you to tweak individual objects so they look like you want them to look. Character-wise, you’re able to have separate top and bottom designs for your clothing, so “if you want your little Animal Crossing boy to wear a t-shirt and a skirt then, odd as that may look, you can do it.”
The village itself is “said to be a lot bigger this time than ever with many separate section”, and you can see its general layout in the image above. There’s also a new section for “Model Homes”. These are homes designed to provide you with inspiration for your own designs. Plus, since the game supports StreetPass, when you pass someone with a save file for Animal Crossing 3DS, their house is added to this section.

What about Paper Mario doesn’t get you into it? Honestly the best part about that series (even though it’s only had 3 installments and SPM doesn’t really count) is the storytelling. The gameplay takes off of SMRPG and each has an engrossing plot compared to the usual Mario games (except for the M&L series). PM was great and you won’t find anyone who won’t agree that PM&tTYD was a home run.
So what it is? The gameplay, story, scheme, graphics, puzzles, mechanics, etc…? What keeps you away? I could understand if it was an RPG (I have a number of friends who dislike back and forth combat).

Definitely me, haha! I love Animal Crossing and was introduced to the series with Wild World for the DS, which I seem to have lost somewhere around my room.. This looks like it greatly expands upon that game, while retaining the perfect amount of nostalgia from the old ones :)
I had City Folk for Wii, but it got boring because i had only one friend and once he traded it in, it got really boring. Maybe this one will be different since i have a lot more friends to play with :)

I tried Animal Crossing back in the Gamecube days & it bored me to tears. There doesn’t seem to be any point to it, & it simply wasnt fun.
The graphics in this look exactly the same as the GCN version, in fact all the AC games tend to look exactly the same

I got a paper form GameStop and it said that AC 3DS is coming out on May 2nd this year. It may not be true but at least we have a date to guess around on. IM SUPER EXCITED 4 THIS GAAAAME!
Well it won’t come out on May 2, that’s a Wednesday and Nintendo always releases games on Sunday, I would say that May 6th is a possibility though…
They also mentioned that it was to be released March 30th, 2011 and also January 2nd, 2012 so don’t get your hopes up.

In all seriousness, can someone explain what’s fun/entertaining about this game? I’ve never played it before…
It’s really hard to explain. It’s basically the most laid-back game ever, but it’s a lot of fun. The game mostly consists of collecting everything in the game. And yes, there’s a shit ton of stuff in this game. You can hang out with your friends through Wi-Fi, er-Nintendo Network, and sometimes you can make up your own little competitions and games to play with eachother. Like I said, it sounds really dull if you just ask somebody about it, but there’s a lot to see and do in AC.
Collecting stuff, and getting out from under the burden of mortgage …
trying to catch the biggest fish in competitions, making friends with the towns people, day by day watching as characters get closer to you and tell you more about themselves.. helping your town expand (eg nooks store) sending letters to friends, dressing up your character, expanding your house, visiting a friends town or having people visit yours.. there is so much content.. and every day, week and season is different! i’ve been playing AC:Wild World on and off for 6 years now.. it never really gets old
At the start of Amnesia, the game tells you to not aim to complete it, but to try and immerse yourself in the games atmosphere and storyline. Similarly, Animal Crossing is a game where you emerge yourself into the town, and everything you do is only for the purpose of having fun doing it. There’s not many things to do in terms of “completing the game”, except I suppose for collecting everything. You can just chill out in AC, chill out and have fun :D

@Free of Birth: Animal Crossing was indeed on the N64. It was called Dōbutsu no Mori. It was only available in Japan though. It was later remade into Dōbutsu no Mori + which eventually became Animal Crossing on the Gamecube.

From one side I’m really excited, but being the mayor might kind of spoil the atmosphere of the game to me, and the new look of the village, though more thought out, doesn’t feel consistent with the other games. After all the original title is “Animals of the forest”: the village should look like a small forest with houses in it. This looks like a village with a side dish of forest.

They can have land octopodes (yes, that is the correct plural form of octopus), a mummified dog, a cat without a face, another cat that looks like an unmerciful deity, even another cat that ressembles an orange, an axolotl salamander (that’s what Dr. shrunk is), living snowmen, a ghost, a guy who wears a pumpkin on his head, etc… and they can’t give you mystical creatures like a jackalope, unicorn, or dragon or even something less mystical but probably impossible: a land shark!
That would be sooooo TUBULAR!!

This is the game I am looking forward to the most(along with Luigi’s Mansion 2), it looks fantastic with the improves that have been made, I read about most of this news in a recent ONM, great to see some news on here about it though. This isn’t exactly “lots of information” since it’s already on youtube. I’m very disapointed in this series now because of the lack of release date. This game has been advertised before the 3DS was even launched, and the release date still isn’t set in stone.

Yeah, I’m not in a big hurry to go out and buy the 3DS, as I just got my $137 DSi about 5 years ago, and the main reason I did so is because my old $124 original DS was wearing out–the hinge was breaking, the battery wouldn’t hold its charge as long as it used to and the touch screen was unresponsive in most areas. That being said, I’ll wait until the model I have now becomes unserviceably useless to go out and buy the 3DS, especially at such an obscene pricetag as $169, which is high to me on an $854/month budget (the first two ones I got were birthday and Christmas presents).
The only MAJOR part this is missing is THE FREAKING RELEASE DATE! I and countless others already knew 90% of the features, WHEN IS IT COMING OUT DANGIT!
