A recent interview with Tetsuya Nomura of Square Enix has revealed that the story in Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance won’t be drawn out. This will be done by having a level of interactivity during cut scenes, so in a way they’ll be playable. This is how Nomura explained it:

Though the story is important to fans as shown by the results of the [Famitsu] survey, it won’t be drawn-out. Not meaning that we’ve decreased the number of cutscenes, but having each one explained one by one reduces the tempo of the game, so we’re introducing a new system to make up for it.

The ‘new system’ refers to the playable parts.

    on 3ds?

    • That64Kid

No, on psvita. *insert heavy sarcasm*

      But yeah, 3ds exclusive :D

  • DanielS

Hopefully that doesn’t make it too confusing.

  • Adrian

I wonder how this will be implemented. I’m imagining movement, like in Fable or Assassin’s Creed, where voices fade as they get further. I’m hoping it is like that and not just an option menu like Zelda.

    • Total911

Yeah, I like that and the stuff in Half life and Portal, where the story goes on while you f*ck around in some other place breaking everything in sight.

    • Belinni

Perhaps they will allow for dialogue decisions sort of like Mass Effect? That or they mean cutscenes with quicktime events that have different outcomes (mash Triangle to win from KH2).

    Thats cool.

  • EpicLight

Yeah, I’m hoping you could make movements that relate to what you’re doing, or options that allow you to do certain things.

  • Santiago

KH 3D is actually a very “pretty” game. It’s the best looking KH game to date, and i love the gameplay shown in the trailer. Hopefully, Square puts more work into this game so we can enjoy an amazing experience next year. :D

  • jeremy molko

what do you mean by “playable” cut-scenes im not sure i understand…….

  • fte

    Quicktime events! lmao

    • Requiem

      Ugh I hope not

    • Soeroah

I actually liked some of Atlantica in KH2. But it would be very annoying to have that system in major cinematics XP

“Press Triangle to tell Leon to STFU! You missed. Sora’s pants fell down.”

I don’t get how this will work. How can you see what’s going on if you’re moving?

  • Josh

Looking at the trailer and this post, it seems like the game will be very fast paced.

  • CCs and Cream

    Interesting…

  • ProtoCut

This is going to reinvent the series. Maybe now people will stop complaining about “spin off” games.

    • Belinni

Personally the only game I think is spin off is Re:Coded on the DS. That story would be unnecessary by the time 3 comes out. I can’t wait for the spin off of how Sora, Riku and Kairi planted that palm tree though! (sarcasm)

Unrelated, I would love to see worlds based on Miyazaki movies like Ponyo or Spirited Away despite how unlikely that would be. If anything we would probably get an X-men world before then. XD

  • Auzzie Wingman

Makes me think of the Duel sequences in Dark Cloud.

    • http://www.YouTube.com/khfanlizzie lizzie1238

      Omg I love those! :)

  • Johnny

That screenshot is actually good, I hope the game looks like that – if not better. I can’t wait for this game, I love getting new info for it but every single time I see a picture of it or some news about it, it makes me sad that I have to wait like a year for it :(

  • Sarah

I don’t really understand how a playable cutscene would work… I don’t really like the idea as I imagine it, either.

I enjoy just sitting back and watching the cinematography and rendering of the cutscenes after battling heartless and nobodies for a while; and the cutscenes do a great job of making you really attached to the characters.

    • [V]ark

Have you played Resident Evil 4?

That game also had some sort of interactive cutscenes. Sometimes you suddenly had to press a certain button combinaton (and if you don’t a painfull death awaits :P )

    • Letat

Thats not what Numora means by interactive- RE4 was “quicktime events” – Interactive cutscenes is a new system featured in Final Fantasy Versus, look at that gameplay to understand what its like.

    • [V]ark

      I see :)

  • Jmaster720

hmm this could be VERY INTERESTING like HALF LIFE Or it could a disaster

  • Roxas

I just want a marvel world where deadpool is your partner (Disney/Marvel merge)

    Sounds interesting.

  • Mwaha…..

  • Paper Mario

can someone tell me what kingdom hearts is and if it is a good game or not

    • http://www.YouTube.com/khfanlizzie lizzie1238

It’s too complicated to explain the story, but the games are great!

  • James Hunter

    ffs. It’s quick time events.

  • Issun

I’m fairly certain he was talking about FFXIII Versus, not KH. Sounds like a case of bad translation to me.

    • Issun

Never mind, I just saw the Japanese and he said they have developed some sort of system for doing cut-scenes so that they aren’t long and drawn out (literally ‘ruin the tempo by explaining everything from start to finish’). He then clearly says that “but it’s not the same as we are doing for Versus, where you will be able to play during the cut-scenes.

    • Issun

No where in the interview does he mention that the approach to story-telling pacing will include ‘a level of interactivity during cut scenes’. Please note this in the story as it’s misleading.

  • NegaScott128

So it’ll be like MGS Peace Walker’s cutscenes?
