There were rumblings of a 3DS XL announcement at E3 2012, but they were disregarded by Nintendo. Hideki Konno of Nintendo, however, did “express his affinity for the DSi XL’s increased real estate” and said that “he finds the larger screen is much easier to gaze upon”.

In the past, Reggie Fils-Aime has expressed a similar favour of larger screens. It makes me wonder if those reports were simply wrong about the timing of the 3DS XL. I still think it could be on its way.

  • JOSHUA

Hopefully they will make a bigger 3DS!

    • Basil

      Exactly HOW big?

    • http://www.youtube.com/user/Spakiness Spakiness

HD Ratio screen would be nice.

    • RicardoSForever

Well, a 1280×720 screen would be exagerated for the 3DS. But a resolution that equals the Vita would be nice.

    • Green Reuben

big enough for 2 extra shoulder buttons

    • critical

They should make it as big as Wii U controller.

I mean, that controller is the same size as PS Vita… thats why people like it.

    • Craig

@Basil Well, the physical size of the screen (if you put it in relation to length and width of pixels) is 300×180. The native resolution of a game is 400×240 and is displayed physically smaller on the screen. So I’d imagine, the physical screen would have to be equivalent to a physical size of 400×240 – in order to avoid over stretching and making it look awful. The reason for the blocky edges is the smaller view on the screen, so it would rid that on a bigger screen – yet a smaller physical size means textures look crisper… There are pros and cons to it but I wouldn’t go bigger than that.

    • Alex Atkin UK

The resolution will not increase, they never EVER have done that. The pixels are just bigger.

  • ThinkLogically

Ok guys, think for a moment… The DSi XL was simply larger screens, which made it slightly more expensive than it’s predecessor, the DSi. Not only will the 3DS XL be LARGER, but it will also take more engineering to create a much larger 3D screen capable of doing the same things the 3DS is currently capable of. This device will probably run 1.7-1.9 times as expensive as the original 3DS. I’m not saying it’s not going to happen, I’m saying it’s going to be expensive. For those waiting, I’d buy one now, unless, of course, you’re willing to pay the extra $140 – $165 for it. Then by all means, go for it. Seems like a waste of money unless you have severe eye problems, but then again if you have serious eye problems, should you really be playing video games, furthermore, 3D video games, to begin? Personally I think it’s a weak investment for Nintendo, especially if they engineer the screens like they did for the DSi XL, larger screens, crappier quality.

    • http://youtube.com/user/pyroblock pyroblock

the 3ds isnt all about 3d, i cant even see 3d i still have one, you can have one just for the games because you clearly wont get them for the ds

    • invictus4000

Interesting thoughts…but you say it like you’re working at Nintendo and looking at the facts on a sheet of paper. While I agree it will be more expensive, Nintendo knows not to release a new unit with a gigantic price tag (since they already did that once).
The way I see it, the DS was amazing to begin with and the DSi and DSi XL still pushed a TON of units. If there ever is a 3DS XL, I think it will do really well simply because that’s what the trend shows. I know I’ll get one for sure on day 1.

  • lolll

Reading this just annoys me. Both of them said they liked big screens. So why put a tiny screen on the 3ds??? The 3ds screen is so small. Its just nintendo being cheap as hell!

    • Captain Falcon

Nintendo did that so 3D viewing would be easier.
I guess you should be thankful. :P

    • Andrew

its not tiny…..a little smaller then ipod touch screen

    • Perry

Exactly, the reason it’s small is because of the distance between the eye and the screen makes it work. If it were bigger you would have to hold the 3DS farther away. Not good.

    • Tails the Foxhound

Gee, this thread has been saved by Falcon. How swell!

    • Matt

Did you ever complain about your GBA having a small screen? No? Why the 3ds?

It may be smaller compared to the Vita, but honestly you don’t notice the difference in size when you’re immersed in a good game anyways. I don’t ever switch from playing my Vita to 3ds and think “oh my god this screen is much smaller I don’t want to use it”. It’s just simply not an issue.

  • Porkins

Instead of making the 3DS bigger.
Why don’t they just make the screens bigger?
    Thats it.
    JUST the screens.
    Not the whole damn system.

    • Co-Wink-Key-Dink inc.

The battery would drain even more, and on the the buttons and speakers will be cramped

    • invictus4000

I totally hear ya. As cool as that would be…I’d have to agree with ^^

  • SEGAGIGA

It won’t be much of an issue if they made the 3DSXL with the same resolution as the original 3DS. (just like the DSi – DSiXL)

The advantage here would be that aside from the bigger screen, it can have a higher capacity battery and probably have better sounding speakers too. The size however, makes it incompatible with existing add ons like the slide pad. They’ll have to make it built in but things like those will add even more cost to the system which might bring the cost back up to 250 USD all over again.

If they can keep it down to 200 it will remain competitive, but that I guess might just be wishful thinking unless Nintendo has figured out a way to cut manufacturing costs for this revision which I think they already have. They’re just waiting for the right time to release it and it won’t come out any time soon, maybe next year.

    • invictus4000

Agreed. I’m betting holiday season of 2013.

  • megajacobf

i like my 3ds the way it is. just add on another circle pad

    • Andrew

      no……not all games use it where would A B Y X g o then?
Circle Pad Extensions are being devloped by more companies then nintendo now….so you have options

    • megajacobf

just move a b x y down and put the circle pad there and do you think all vita games use both?

    • Lene

Not enough games use the 2nd CC to justify moving the buttons down ( è_é )

  • Flygon

I’d prefer an XL to any other new version of the 3DS. (What the DSi XL was to the DSi, and nothing more. No extra joystick or anything.) Because it would mean my 3DS is not suddenly useless, and those who complain about the small screens can just get the XL.

  • http://nintendo.com tuly

It would make more sense for Nintendo to release more of a 3DS Lite because the DS Lite sold 83 million units, more than all the other models combined.

    • Ness

That would be fucking useless. The thing’s small as shit already!

    • Derpsicle

      Ness is right.

    • adrian12369

agreed. when i first held my 3ds i immediately thought that it was smaller than i thought it’d be

    • invictus4000

Agreed with Ness. It’s small enough already (which I think they did deliberately since everyone was used to DS Lite).

    • the psvita is better

@ness come down dude, now i see why reggie doesnt localize your games anymore

    • Roxas

      This ^ was Funny

  • LittleMofreaky

They’ll probably wait to release a 3DS until after the Wii U is out. They want to market that more than anything right now I’m sure.

    • Total911

      This is exactly it.

  • Pete41608

they should have launched with a bigger screen. i know, money money, but its time for bigger screens to become the norm for Nintendo.

  • http://nintendo3ds.wikia.com J. Severe

A 3DS XL probably will be released one day – every Nintendo handheld has received a new redesign or iteration eventually – but not anytime soon. Nintendo has to deal with the Wii U now, so I’m sure they’re focusing on their hardware skillz on that at the moment. Maybe once the U has found its footing the 3DS XL will be let out of the bag.

  • Brandos12

Hopefully, if they make a new 3DS, they will make add the other anolog stick and shoulder buttons. Also, a better battery life would be great! I’m getting tired of charging my 3DS every single day..

  • adrian12369

i’d definitely like a bigger screen, another circle pad, and more shoulder buttons bult in a redesign. however, i wouldn’t want the redesign to look like a monster either.

  • King Boo

I hope they change to induction charging so they have more space for the second shoulder buttons.

  • http://nintendo3dsblog.com/hideki-konno-talks-3ds-and-bigger-screens/ gannon

OFF TOPIC: I emailed NIntendo about how I was pissed off and stuff about how they didn’t show animal crossing (I didn’t think they’d read it) and they responded today. They said how they were sorry and stuff, and how to don’t worry, the game isn’t forgotten. They apologized a bunch of times. I feel like shit now….I realized what a little animal crossing bitch I was…..SORRY NINTEDNO <3

    • Pika pika

This may be the the first time in the history of the Internet that someone admits to bitching/overreacting. Props to you. Let’s hope the rest of the Internet realizes how much complaining they’re doing about something like video games, instead of real problems of the world. Does anyone else feel that people are more patriotic to video game companies that their own DAMN COUNTRY. Grrrrr

    • cancelln

Wow, I’m surprised they even answered, that’s great

    • Dae

Yeah, nintendo has answered all of my emails. Which is about 4 or 5. It’s pretty great. :D

    • Kaptain Penelope

      That’s…….. kind of sweet.

  • mii

idk but i prefer the smll 3ds lol

    • invictus4000

Haha yeah man. I admit I would LOVE a 3DS XL…but that doesn’t mean I don’t adore my little 3DS. He’s just a dependable little guy to have around! Screw eberyone that complains about it’s size! It’s about the same as a DS Lite guys!

    • Oops

Not to mention its way more portable then the ps vita is!

  • najee

i think the 3ds xl is stupid. think about it bigger screens + 3d = your eyes to spread more apart

    • BR!4N

      (. ) _ ( .)
      Like that?

    • invictus4000

      @BR!4N…LOL!
@najee…I’m sure they will figure it out. All I know is giant screens with 3D gaming would be freakin’ sweet and seeing as I have had a big, fat 0 on the eye-strain scale since day 1, I’m not worried!

    • najee

to replyers: if you play a game like super mario 3d land or legend of zelda orcarina of time 3d they make your eyes may feel funny the first or later on or just one time when played and nintendo says in 3ds mode keep the 3ds 14-in away from face to help reduce eye strain and/or vision problems my bet is that the 3ds xl (if comes will have to be hold farther then 14-ins)but thats what i think in fact in the future nintendo may release 2 handleds in one year and the my make there next gen portables i bet if it happen one maybe the 3ds xl

    • Kaptain Penelope

      Hahahahaha! xD

    • Matt

No, bigger screen does not mean your eyes will have to be spread further apart. They can adjust the angle at which it shoots the light.

  • cancelln

Am I the only one that thinks this would be disastrous for street pass, I don’t think I’d be able to fit a 3ds xl in my pocket comfortably

    • baka

Well, you can always use a backpack or a messenger bag. In Japan they sell small ones for the 3DS, like in the original 3DS concept video.

    • http://gravatar.com/jacknzack27 JacknZack

But i dont carry back packs every where

    • http://hybrilynx.net/ Hybrilynx

my lifetime streetpass after a year has been maybe 4 people. i dont think it matters anyway.

    • Dae

My lifetime streetpass is about 460 tags with 200 with real people.

    • Zeem

If you’re putting it in your pocket you’re doing it wrong. Its going to fall out and break someday, mark my words.

    • SakuMo

This is where being a girl is advantageous. Purses ftw, lol.

    • Kaptain Penelope

Good thing us girls carry handbags. ;)

    • Andy

@Zeem: The solution; stop wearing skinny jeans.

  • Mickey

does anyone else besides me think that the first thing that Nintendo should think about doing is making a system with a battery life that doesn’t suck. I mean they could just make a new battery that would last longer.

  • http://gravatar.com/jacknzack27 JacknZack

i didnt like the DSIXL because it made the system less portable.

  • http://hybrilynx.net/ Hybrilynx

how about stop making rip offs and let us put the 3ds screen on our own tv screen? nintendo already has their own copy of one of these adapter things anyway. just let us have it too.

  • Dae

    Guys.
I don’t know about you, but I’m perfectly content with the 3DS as is. I just want a better battery, which is plausible. However, that’s not keeping me from enjoying my 3DS fully. Bigger screens are just unnecessary and honestly less attractive. It wouldn’t fit in your pocket as well or be as comfortable holding for long periods of time.
So, really, I have no major complaint with the 3DS as is. And really, I don’t know why people really want a bigger screen. It’s not exactly tiny. Look back at your Game Boy Pockets/Colors. Then, you’ll see a tiny screen.

  • Zeem

The DSi XL was always vastly underrated, considering its barely any bigger than the original, grey Nintendo DS.

I’d happily see a larger one, esspecially if they use some of the extra space to give us the second circle pad.

    • Kaptain Penelope

I liked the DSi XL a lot, I have dyslexia so it made reading text much less of a pain in the capital B. ;)

  • sam765

Well since the DSi XL was an instant hit why not?

    • KING Z

      Uh… It Was?

  • sam765

Iphone, Vita and Galaxy S have already bigger screens, I think Nintendo should go with the flow.

  • Sly Cooper

id get it if i could trade my 3ds in and get an xl for 30-50 dollars more and hopefully they’ll fix the whole ds quality problem

  • Anonymus

    y r u so quiet after E3 O.o ???

    • AceOfBlades247

‘Cuase there’s not much news anymore.

  • Luigi’sM

This maybe a bit off topic, but I wouldn’t mind seeing a new improved DS system with graphics to rival the 3DS without the 3D feature, but with all the other features of the 3DS & also for the system to have bigger screens, by not using 3D screens the system would be cheaper.

    • AceOfBlades247

Then that new system wouldn’t be called the “3DS”. And the system would be cheaper by like $15 USD.

    • AceOfBlades247

      *Would Probaly be

    • canthia

That does not make sence anyone with a nintendo 3ds can just turn off the 3d completely that is what the 3ds silder is for.

    • SakuMo

No. The depth slider exists for a reason.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/Mrpigmen1002 MrPigmen1002

I hope that if it comes, and I trade-in my 3DS, that they could transfer everything over!

    • AceOfBlades247

Yep, that’s the Biggest problem I had when buying a 3DS. So, I bought the 3DS and transfered all the data then later on when Starfox 64 3D came out I traded my DsiXL in for…

      TLoZ:OoT
      SSF4:3D Edition
      Starfox 64 3D
      And Accesories

    • Carlinhos

      ^Great choices!

  • http://youtube.com/the8guys Dylan

I guess a bigger one would be cool but I want 2 different models, glossy like the 3DS now, and a smooth back like the DSi/DSi XL soo basically the usual smooth back and glossy front

  • Alex Atkin UK

I think its pretty much guaranteed that an XL will come out, especially as there is good reason for them to build-in the second analog slider.

  • Neil

    A 3DS XL with:
    1. Imrpoved Screen
    2. Better graphics (not that necessary, would would be cool)
    3. ZL and ZR buttons like Circle Pad Pro
    4. Surely a 2nd Circle Pad
    5. Mhm. Maybe some things more :D

BUT the most important thing: the 3DS “XL” should still fit in the pocket! Not like the Vita, that one is TOO big and the analog sticks are disturbing in the pockets ^^
And I don’t own a DSi XL but does it fit good in the pocket? :D

    • King Boo

about as well the original DS

    • KING Z

Yea My DSi XL Always Use To Fit In My Pockets

    • Enzo

I think the 3DS XL should have two circle pads and a bigger top and bottom screen. I doubt they would do much more than that, because the price will skyrocket if they improved the screen quality and boosted the graphics.

  • Aaron

I already have a 3DS, and I have no problems with it. I would consider a 3DSXL IF it has a better battery life.

    • Neil

lol it obviously would have an extended battery life, when not, Nintendo would actually be really stupid lol ^^

    • Kaptain Penelope

The screens would need more power, so the battery would have to be pretty darn good if you wanted even more hours out of it.

  • phantom1472

I think nintendo intentionally made poor battery life a problem with their current model, that way the masses will clamor for a redesign. Nintendo is notorious for redesigning their hardware, so give it time. I’m in no rush for the new model. Although some features really bother me, for instance the lack of a second analog slider… I’m a Nintendo fanboy at heart, but come on your telling me nintendo didn’t foresee these issues?

  • henry

I hope they make this because i personally hate the dsi xl and loved the dsi. if they dont make this then i will be so tempted to get it and waste my money. but if they dont i wont be tempted becuase it would be a piece of shit.

  • Total911

Gonna be honest, I probably wouldn’t buy one because I don’t mind the screen size as it is and I’m not gonna spend the money I could be using to get more games on one. Still, I guess it’s okay but people would just think the next generation of consoles are just remakes of the 3DS, same problem as this generation.

  • anon

I don’t want a larger 3DS. The resolution won’t be increased, and it’s bad enough already. On the other hand I’d get a redesign 3DS if it removed the region lock. Granted, they could probably do that in a firmware update, but maybe they’d see that as losing face or something.

  • Philip Hanan

3DS XL? That thing had better not cost more than $249.99.

  • Nintyfan95

Miyamoto just confirm this isn’t happening, Nintendo plans to basically focus on there next generation portable
