GameGear and TurboGrafx16 heading the Virtual Console, Sega reveals their line-up

In amongst the crazy awesome announcements coming out of GDC it was also revealed that GameGear and TurboGrafx16 titles would be making their way to the Virtual Console in the 3DS, which launches during late May. The Virtual Console allows you to download and play games from older systems in pretty much their original form (compared to the Classic Games feature which will offer 3D-ified versions of games). Sega has confirmed that they’ll be bringing five different Virtual Console titles to the platform:

* Sonic & Tails 2
* Sonic Drift 2
* The GG Shinobi
* Dragon Crystal Shirani’s Maze
* Columns

Exact release dates and prices are unknown at this point, but I suspect they’ll be available within three or four months of the 3DS receiving the update that will install the Virtual Console. Do any of these games tickle your fancy? What games are you excited to see on the Virtual Console?

**Update:** There are some sites reporting that these titles will be available at launch. This might be the case, but they’re using GoNintendo as a source, who used Famitsu as their source. Aside from GoNintendo never referring to these titles as the *launch* line-up for the Virtual Console, I’d definitely trust andriasang’s translation over any other site.

    It would be cool if the could make Sonic the Hedgehog 3D, but I’m talking about the newer ones not just the classic versions of Sonic, but those classics are good too. I really enjoyed Sonic on the PS3, and I was wondering if they could do that with the 3DS a while ago.

    These are launch titles with the Virtual Console service. SEGA announced that already.

    On a positive note, this looks pretty cool!

    So david have they confirmed if we have to use a 3ds points card or do we gave to pay with credit card to download from the 3ds?

      There’s no points card..it’s been said already.

      There ARE points cards. Instead of points,though, they will use real money. So it’s like an Itunes card.

    If my smartphone can run ps1,Gba, snes, and Genesis emulators, I think the 3ds can do better with VC

      It’s because they don’t want to over-saturate the market. We may not know it but I’m sure Nintendo is working hard enough porting GameBoy (Color) games as it is, and adding GBA games to that list becomes overwhelming. Not to mention support would be much greater for GBA games, so they wouldn’t have incentive to remake the old games. This way however, the old GB games are the only options, and Nintendo can still make a profit as they’re the only Nintendo games on the Virtual Console.

      The Play Coins are used to unlock stuff within games, not to buy stuff (unless they’re in the game).

      No it’s not free! silly goose! Where have I heard that before.. lol.. I assume you don’t have a Wii (or at least with the Shop Channel) or a DSi (or at least with the DSi shop) ? Am I right? Why would it be free anyway? However, some of the upcoming 3DS Ware might be free. I’m not trying to be mean or anything. Wow. I just noticed: I answer a lot of you questions! ^_^

    When they started talking about the “Virtual Handheld” back in the DSi they said that it would be only with nintendo titles… Now they are including consoles that aren’t even portable… There’s no excuse for not putting the GBA on this… U_U
    I want Megaman Battle Network 1-6 in my 3DS… U_U
    But if they do put games like Megaman BN series that have a good multiplayer system, they should at least give some way for us to play wireless multiplayer(as we can’t use the link cable from GBC/GBA in the 3DS)…

      No they said they’re releasing a new IP, or in other words a new game-type. And although the year isn’t over yet I think it’s Steel Diver. But the only problem with that idea is Steel Diver’s been around since 2004…. stupid loophole.

      They will make a 3DS Sonic game. It was on the list of announced 3DS games.This is what Takashi Iizuka(a member of Sonic Team) said:

      “At Sonic Team, we’re already studying the Nintendo 3DS. We’re very interested in the platform. We think the depth of 3D could really help the sense of speed, especially when you’re playing Sonic from behind-the-back perspective.”

      This could mean that the game will be a 3D-scroll game similar to Sonic Unleashed and Sonic Adventure.

      Sonic and Tails 1 is known as Sonic Chaos in the US. Sonic & Tails 2 is normally known as Sonic Triple Trouble stateside.

    Ahhhh man i love the game gear i own one with the suitcase lookin thing and in if i lived during the game boy game gear ant atari lynx i would chose the game gear cuz i loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee sonic and i thought the games were smother on the game gear than the game boy but i still love the game boy and im just exited for the virtual counsle in genural
