Features (or lack thereof) for GBA and NES titles via Ambassador Program
169 Comments
Between September 1st and the end of the year, early adopters of the 3DS will receive twenty free games via the eShop. Half of them will be Game Boy Advance games and the others will be NES. It’s a neat offer, but there are some deficiencies with either set of games. GBA games have a bunch of missing features compared to the NES titles, while the NES titles are being labeled as the “priority delivery version” because they will lack certain features until after they’re updated at a later date. You can check after the break for the details.
Features of the Virtual Console Game Boy Advance titles
- Manuals will be available.
- Wireless functions and peripheral devices are not supported.
- When you press the HOME Button, a simple menu is displayed, and you won’t be able to return directly to the HOME Menu.
- Neither the “Restore Point” function nor the “VC Suspend” functions are supported.
- If you’re playing a game that includes a save function, you can select Save, and your data will be saved when you’ve finished playing the Game Boy Advance game.
- During gameplay, the Nintendo 3DS system will not enter Sleep Mode even if you close it.
- SpotPass and StreetPass will not function during gameplay.
- You will be able to “Transfer to another Nintendo 3DS” with the “System Transfer” function that will be provided in future system updates.
Features of the Virtual Console NES titles (priority delivery version)
- An electronic manual explaining game controls will be included.
- The official version* (which will be delivered at a later date) will include a full electronic manual.
- Alternating multiplayer modes are supported in some titles, but simultaneous multiplayer modes are not.
- The official version* (which will be delivered at a later date) will also support versus play.
- Does not include the “Restore Point” function (which allows you to create and load restore points at any time while gameplay) usually included in the Virtual Console Game Boy and Game Boy Color games.
- However, it will include the “VC Suspend” function (which allows you to save the game when you suspend play by pressing the HOME Button). The official version* (which will be delivered at a later date) will support the Restore Points function.
- You will be able to “Transfer to another Nintendo 3DS” with the “System Transfer” function that will be provided in future system updates.
Ah well,at least i get to transfer these to a different 3DS if i get a new color.
y wud u buy a new colour
He *would buy a new color *maybe* because it’s a lot cheaper and *maybe* because he FEELS like it?
I’d just buy another color to support Nintendo :D Plus, red looks awesome
or the 3ds xl
Funny because I think everyone knows about modding their Wii’s but I’m sure most people don’t WANT to do it. Personally I don’t understand why you’re on a website dedicated to the Nintendo 3DS, it’s like asking to be hated on.
oops wrong post sorry
Never mind
That’s annoying, my 3DS wont sleep if I close it during game play :(
Big deal. The GBA didn’t have sleep mode (only certain games could).
Yes but that was because the firmware on the GBA could not be updated to add new functionality after launch, plus it didn’t really have an OS like the DSi upwards has.
There is no excuse of not allowing sleep mode in this case as its an emulator, you could add any functionality you want to it. The fact the home button does ANYTHING proves that you could also detect closing of the lid. Its just bad programming, plain and simple.
It could be that it ISN’T an emulator. The GBA games may not be emulated; the CPU in the 3DS can run the GBA software natively. It’s the same deal as the DS / DS Lite running GBA games, or the Wii running GameCube games. The Wii example is particularly telling: Once you’re in GameCube/GBA mode, you can’t get out, due to security features keeping the Wii/3DS hardware unavailable to the older code.
If sleep mode is considered a 3DS hardware feature, then, the GBA code can’t access it. The firmware may be able to intercept the hinge-close and the Home button and execute GBA-mode code in response to them, but if it can’t put the console in sleep mode then it can’t.
piece of crap. the 3ds is so low tech man.
then gtfo of this site…
and please never come back
Bitch!
did you even read the article it doesnt even talk about the technology of the 3ds it just says how the ambassador program games will function on the 3ds
i think the piece of crap your talking about is your mind
i like it more than the ipod
and you are on this site, why?
Low Tech? HAH! the 3DS has more power then even the PSP,which was the highest tech handheld back then, the only handheld that surpasses the 3DS is the PSvita, which wont be out till 2012!and if your comparing to something other then handhelds, listen to this. The 3DS is handheld, and it should be compared to handhelds, not consoles.
@Some Random Guy
ur a idiot. are u really comparing the 3ds power the psp lol, ima 3ds owner and i will say its a shame how weak it is. things dumb to sometimes cuz i cant be online and playing zelda at the same time wtf. and honestly the things they just said disappointed me. 3ds is weak vita isnt out yet which is the only reason illgive it some respect. but really the resolution is smaller then a PSP a 2005 product vs a 2011 product. ill say netflix is good on it but messes up and makes me need to restart my system sometimes. but right now i have zelda till starfox then mario 3d land (worse name ever) and then mario kart 7. then mayb tales and paper mario if it comes out this year. but after that im not lookin for more then kingdm hearts and umm, nothing really. guys right even if he sounds like he’s so called trolling. im disappointed and will forever be jus nintendo has franchises i love
i dont care about the psp btw. but its stupid how the wii can pause and play later even N64 games, but the 3ds cant even do GBA games. not even dsiware games. i cant even play dsiware games on the sd card.

Wow. The amount of text/net speak with lack of grammar, along with the hate… Makes my brain hurt. Let’s be a little more civil, and brush up on the grammar a little. You’re using “your” improperly, and “Ur” is an ancient city that Abraham and his father lived in the Old Testament.
“the 3DS has more power then even the PSP”
Actually no.
PSP has 2, 333 MHz processors, a 166 MHz GPU
3DS has 2, 266 MHz processors, a 133 Mhz GPU
PSPs OS is vastly superior, everything is organized properly. Even it’s webbrowser can display sites 3DS’s cant.
@Neo 3DS has way better firmware than PSP. 3DS loads site better than PSP as well. I’ve played with my PSP a lot and the 3DS has a superior browser and you can actually access the Home menu while in game. The only thing 3DS needs is the option to group games in it’s menu.
Whatever,my statement is that the 3DS is not low tech, even if its outclassed by others, and its powerful in general, but maybe not in comparison.
OBJECTION! Take a look at this piece of evidence: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Megahertz_myth
The 3DS’s ARM processors and the PSP’s MIPS processors are from completely different architectures. Thus, it is impossible to compare their performance on clock speeds alone!
On a side note, many PSP games run at 222MHz (this was enforced by Sony for a time).
it doesnt even matter about power and crap. nintendo restricts everything. i bet most people here still dont even know that the wii can play DVD’s, and mp3′s from the SD card, and etc stuff like downloading songs on the SD card to the wii console itself. you just need to mod it. i bet no one here even knows about super smash bro brawl plus.
Funny because I think everyone knows about modding their Wii’s but I’m sure most people don’t WANT to do it. Personally I don’t understand why you’re on a website dedicated to the Nintendo 3DS, it’s like asking to be hated on.
Why do you keep coming here plaguing us with your trolling nonsense? Get a life, dude!
Trololololol
And “brawl plus” sucks; so you shouldn’t try to use that to make yourself seem better than someone else. Brawl; the way it comes on the disk, is perfect the way it is(aside from a few discrepancies).
i have a life, above person. thats one reason why i hate how nintendo chooses to be the way they are. i hate playing games that you cant even talk to the other player. nintendo games are always quit and gives you a lonely feeling. and im just speaking my mind, and what is true. why else is there a “post comment” application.
the only reason you cant do anything it says doesnt mean the 3ds is low tech its only because nintendo had about 2 weeks to turn 10nes games and 10 gba games into 3ds ones lets see you do THAT
*sigh Why. What has the website become?! It turned into a place for fan-boy wars. The shame.
So basically Greeg, you’re a whiner who, at the end of the day, will still buy everything you whine about just because in reality you DO have fun with it…
@ Neo Techni:
Actually, neither the PSP, nor the 3DS, have dual core GPUs. Both only have a single core GPU. You are correct on the PSP GPU’s clock speed, but not the 3DS’s.
The 3DS’s GPU is not clocked at 133MHz. That must’ve been taken from specifications before the launch of the system. After the 3DS launched, many have found that the DMP Pica is clocked at 200MHz.
Also, here’s some proof that the 3DS is more powerful than the PSP:
Processors get more efficient each year, meaning a 100MHz processor made in 2011 is more powerful than a 400MHz processor made in 2004.
The main CPU of the PSP is a single core processor that can be clocked from 1 to 333MHz.
The GPU of the PSP is 166MHz.
32MB Main RAM
2MB Video RAM
This technology compares to the home console, PlayStation 2.
The Main CPU of the 3DS has two cores that are both clocked at 266MHz, or 532MHz effectively.
The GPU of the 3DS is 200MHz
64MB Main RAM
4MB Video RAM
This technology compares to the home console, Wii.
And on another note, the Wii is way more powerful than the PS2. The Gamecube was more powerful than the PS2, and the Wii is twice as powerful as the GameCube, so the 3DS is quite the handheld.
okay forget about the psp becuz first of all, that was created ages ago. second, it really doesnt matter what is more powerful, nintendo just doesnt give you much content, and everything seems like nintendo isnt even trying. like the internet browser doesnt include watching videos, and it even refreshes the page against your will when you get on. thats stupid. you cant even use the home menu if your online, unless it dsiware or a ds game. i dont know why, i dont make the rules. so if i want to see what time it is, read a friends message (which probably wont happen for years!), change the brightness, or something else then i have to completely log off just to do that, then log back in etc if i still want to play. you cant even have your own wallpaper and the dsi can. you dont even have the same edit options for the 3ds camera compared to the dsi. i dont know how they couldnt just copy/paste the data. it has the same controls and everything. not ever dsiware things like photo clock can be used, becuz the 3ds doesnt support dsi pictures so photo clock is pretty much a application that if you find interesting, nintendi pretty much steals your money becuz your not going to get any photos on there. and seriously, ive tried using the slide show and out if like 50 pictures, it only shows like 4 photos every single time when i use the slide show. i dont know wtf is wrong with that. they might as well take the slide show off. OR, my system probably has a glitch thanks to nintendo becuz thats what happens to my 3ds. even if i take new photos, its only showing like 4 pictures i took months ago in the slideshow.
To David Hoyle: Nintendo might be bad about restricting stuff, but at least they’re not to the point of out and out -suing- people over managing a jailbreak, like a certain other company I won’t be mentioning. I do want to keep the flames kinda minimal.
@ryan
The 3DS actually has 128mb of ram and 32mb of it is used on the OS, so developers have access to 96 of it, also I’m pretty sure no one knows the exact specs of the 3DS yet, unless someone tested the clock speeds themselves.
David Hoyle doesn’t know ANYTHING about technology. As if it takes POWER for a console to be put in sleep mode. XD
Oh…Oh God…You’re bitching because you can’t see the /time/? That’s absolutely pathetic! It’s like you’re seriously trying as hard as you can to find something bad about it and that’s all you could come up with! It’s hilarious! And boohoo, you can’t talk to people (which you can in some games) that you know online? Maybe if you have friends in the REAL world, then you could talk to them in REAL life. Or, you know, just use Skype if it’s that big of an issue.
I was very happy and exited indeed with these games, but now… I feel cheated, disappointed, betrayed……………
Don’t get me wrong! I’m still exited about these games and I’m still happy about them, but damned… as the title says this is more lack of features than features……..
BUT…the NES games will get an updated version AND be happy that you become 20 free games.
at the ps3 pricedrop a few months after release what did the ps3-buyers get… nothing
Betrayed, isn’t that what day 1 PS3 buyers felt like? be thankful for what you get,we almost never get games for buying a console early
You’re right my friends, those PS3 buyers really get betrayed… However I’m a bit dissapointed because I’ve already played and ended every one of those titles, OK I’ll enjoy them of course but this lack of features in their emulators it’s frustrating, is’nt it?
You know, I enjoy the free games and such, seeing that the future updates won’t be necessary. They will just enhance the game play, not the game itself. But I also feel like Nintedo hasn’t learned their lesson about getting things out to us when those things are not ready. This scenario us different than the 3DS launch, but they still should be looked upon the same way.
@EpicLight the “priority delivery version” title for these games says it all!
PSVita and 3DS Are at a even match proven by science.
When the Playstation network was down. It came back up and u got free games for both ps3 and PSP….soooooo…….playstation does give us some free stuff. So Yeah. Its so gay how nintendo always has to add dif systems y a dsi XL? That was stupid. Now free games YAY. Oh w8. No sleep mode and bunch of other crap that is just lack of effort.
Nicollette, I HAVE. SSBB+ FTW. I love homebrew.
@ Nicollette
Wow. You are comparing getting two games after being unable to access a funcionality of a console for weeks with getting twenty games for buying a console early?
Then, explain me what’s wrong with the DSi XL. You weren’t forced to buy it or anything, where you? Many people enjoyed having a huger system, so what’s your problem?
As for the lack of sleep mode and other things, that’s probably because the GBA games won’t be available on the eShop for the newer 3DS owners for a while, so they just emulated the games as-is. And what’s wrong with that? You don’t get funcionalities that the original games didn’t have? Big deal.
Before you start ranting, I have a PS3 and a PSP as well, so don’t bother.
Is it really that hard to make the Game Boy Advanced games support sleep mode, suspending to go to the HOME menu, and being able to get Street Pass and Spot Pass content? To me, the Sleep Mode function is the biggest deal. Even though it is a small feature, It is very useful to me to save energy, especially since Mario Kart: Super Circuit will be my top application for a wile!
hell you can put gba games in sleep mode on the gba, why not the 3ds? a little silly if you ask me
If im not mistakened, not all GBA titles could go in sleep mode.
I think the VC games stop your 3DS from using wireless communications(I’m not sure since I haven’t bought a VC game yet in the 3DS) so that’s probably not anything new. The sleep mode thing is lame though; as some people would like to play a little and then put it into sleep mode instead of having to reach a save point first(metroid fusion anyone?).
nintendo we need SLEEP!!!
What about this official quote from Nintendo.
“During gameplay, the Nintendo 3DS system will not enter Sleep Mode even if you close it”
What a joke, cellphone emulators made by a guy bored in a basement can make a more user friendly emulator, in less than a few days.
You’re absolutely right. And that’s another problem: I’ve already played (and playing at present) all those games in my smartphone with emulators…………..
I was happy about these games but with this lack of features I’m so very frustrated,……………………….
completely right!
Ugh, you couldn’t sleep when playing on DS and DS lite either.
True, but those consoles ran GBA games in hardware emulation so had to remain 100% GBA compatible.
Virtual Console titles however as their name suggests, are emulated. With an emulator there is no good reason NOT to allow functionality than the original console couldn’t do.
It seems that perhaps the problem here is the 3DS is not powerful enough to emulate the GBA with its OS still running, so it shuts everything down and runs the emulator alone.
That would explain why it cannot save the game instantly (it would take more effort to write to the SD card while in-game as the 3DS OS would normally do that work for you) and why home doesn’t let you back to home (home is not running, although why they couldn’t reboot I do not understand).
These may be fixable issues but would require more time to optimise the emulator to either make it work with the OS still running, or add missing functionality that the OS would usually handle.
Alex is absolutely right. The 3DS has about the power of the Wii, right?
The Wii runs GameCube. But you can’t have wireless functionality, go to the HOME Menu, or anything. The 3DS runs DS, but with the OS and not without it like the Wii. Then we have the GBA. No wonder it can’t have any OS functionality.
it keeps talking about things coming on a later date? will we have to rebuy the proper versions? or do those updates come free? and if it doesnt allow vs play (gba games) then i doubt kirby and the amazing mirror
you dont have to rebuy the proper versions, they´re free
I knew it. Of course there’ll be no multiplayer with GBA games. What was I thinking.
That probably means there won’t be Kirby and the Amazing Mirror……………………
Yeh, but for a game like Mario Kart, multiplayer is kind of expected.
Multiplayer is impossible. GBA is extremely timing-dependent. To the point where even a link cable thats too long can cause enough lag to crash games. Wifi would make it even worse
So does this mean no Multi Player for GBA games?
Some of these things look like laziness to me. Why can’t you go back to home menu while playing GBA games. It looks like they just got lazy and decided to give us a bunch of old games qucikly to make some of us happy. I mean, we’re basically getting non-updated priority versions of the NES classics. Why can’t they just give those ones to us in September. I’ll still give them a try though.
What I meant by ‘those ones’ was the versions being released to the public later this year with multi player.
As some 3DS mates answer me, we’ll even have to be thankful they’re giving us something…. but of course you’re right. If only those were 3D classics………………………….
wow, these are such wonderful improvements to the game. [sarcasm]. ……..but i will still like to play these games. i just dont understand why the GBA games are coming out at the end of the year. go do we have to wait that long?????
pfff big deal…
i can play ANY cba game and ANY nes game on my PSP
……. FOR FREE
And that would be illegal. Or at least be against copyright laws. Some people actually like to legitamantly buy games.
hey look, its mozaki, the weed guy. I bet your being hunted down by the FBI right now.
Yup. Illegal. Oh, and
Illegal = bad
no it’s only illegal in the USA if he is in Latin America believe me it’s legal
Who gives a crap tht its illegal. Its awesome. A bunch Of People Jailbreak and that is technically illegal. I download illegal songs all the time i wanna. I will never get caught and I really dont give a crap
I’ve never heard of cba games are you sure your playing the right games :P
@Arturo what are you talking about? only if its in your country, I live in Latin America too and it is still illegal,of course many people do it, and none had been sued, nor I believe they will be sued, but its still illegal
@jester
lol
too bad there is no fbi in my country
and uh oh yeah
I HAVE SLEEP MODE WHAHAHAHAHA
@mozaki
But you can’t play any of the millions of upcoming 3D Classics of GBA games & NES games.
At least not without 3D & duo screens.
hey my 3ds says my friend is offline but he says he is online has this happened to u plz help!
wait like 2 seconds, he should pop up
i did still nothin
has this happened to anyone before? he says he’s online but the screen says he was last online 2 days ago is ther something wrong with my system??? plz plz reply i hope it’s ok i’m one of the guys who payed full price it would suck for somethin to be wrong plz help!
Does it say you’re online? If it doesn’t show you online, it won’t show anyone else online. And if its not logging you in, your internet might not be working.
ya it says i’m online
Well, is your friends wireless switch on because if its not the yellow blinking thingy will be off
Ok this might be a stupid question but did you both add each others friend codes? Made sure there were no errors when inputting the codes?
yes we both did it over the phone and his switch is on
hey thanks everyone get this his friend notifications said not to sho when he was on lol so it wasn’t anything bad sorry i wsted ur time guys thx for the help
Erm…. It might be just pure emulation, which might run into issues with the chips.
updated with
1. multiplayer local or online
2. 3D
3.allow sleep mode
It doesn’t say no multiplayer for gba games unless you count the link cable as a peripheral device.
it is and how would you connect it anyway?
I already assumed this when the ambassador program was announced. It’s the reason why I said I believe they’re making the free four swords game into a dsiware game. That way they’ll be able to incorporate wireless multiplayer into it.
I also had assumed this. It’s not that big of a loss to me anyway. I do hope Four Swords is as good as everyone said it was.
well, all GBA games have a pause button, so I guess you can just pause the game and close the system. No big deal
but sleep mode not only pauses your game, but also saves power
The only true winners here are those people who were lucke enoght to buy the 3DS today or yesterday and managed to buy the 3DS with the low price AND got all those 20 games. Those are the true winners CONGRATULATIONS IF YOU’RE ONE
That’s me:)
“You will be able to “Transfer to another Nintendo 3DS” with the “System Transfer” function that will be provided in future system updates.”
ok ok just wait a second
so they will FINALLY unlock this feature so we can move our software from 3DS to 3DS?
No… this is meant to the same ambassors but this feature will be available just in case you want to buy another 3DS console in another color, so you won’t lose those free games.
a bit confusing but not a major issue for me. I’ll still enjoy them!
Some good features. It looks like Nintendo are trying to do this right.
Extremely off-topic, but really important!! See what the ninnies are trying to make Nintendo do: http://mynintendonews.com/2011/08/11/nintendo-nintendo-are-being-told-to-bring-their-key-franchises-to-iphone/
look smb 3 is sorta confirmed http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.145793052171823.37088.119240841493711
Seems like an announcement to me! Just adds to the love. :)
Hello All, I finally got around to buying the 3DS. This blog/youtube channel and some of the commentators helped with that decision.
I want to thank:
Fwiller
symbol de Au
ABEzilla
Kaizar
BLACK POWER!
also, David Turnbull for the news as well as
Franco.
I also got the ambassador message and to be honest from what I had heard I though the games would be worth the price difference but I was actually excited by some of them as I never got around to beating metroid etc. on gba. So that’s always good. I was distraught when I first opened my 3DS because the screen hinge was much softer than the wonderful DS Lite hinge. However (maybe this is just mine) but it seems you have to let it lean back to a ~140 degree angle and you can just set it at arbitratary angles like the DS lite.
Also, I found that it was very much not like a nintendo device, which often seem “child proof” this one seemed more like a regular electronic product (maybe it’s the lack of a matte finish).
I didn’t get any games for it yet. I figure some of the four swords + online content + my bag log of DS games will tide me over for now. I am tempted to get OoT soon though.
Speaking of Ocarina of Time I am happy to report that the Gamestop in my area FINALLY switched their 3DS from a Streetfighter demo to an Ocarina of time demo. I must say I was a bit underwhelmed with the 3D at first. Having never seen a 3D movie or anything. But after playing it for moments till my eyes adjusted. I then turned off the 3D and instantly felt the difference. 3D is definitely an improvement. It’s not a game changer, but it is an marked improvement I would say on par with “good graphics”. Very cool stuff.
aww… no sleep mode, no multiplayer, no home button, that stinks for GBA, but, atleast we actually get them, plus were getting them for free. Im wondering, when you transfer GBA games from one system to the other, will they keep their saved file? they better!
I really don’t care how the games work or what features they have that weren’t parts of the originals.
The point is… We’re getting 20 free games!!! Why on earth are you still complaining? Haha
Because even with something as easy as that, they manage to find a way to screw up and send just about everyone into a fury. I’m slowly being convinced that the 3DS really is the Virtual Boy 2. Right down to ultimately being an utter flop that, unlike last time, really WILL kill Nintendo off.
the gba games should b the onoes given then on sept 1st cuz they clearly took noo effort to put on it, they prolly made a crappy emulator in it that they didnt get to support anything but playing. u cant even savestate whose heard of this. smh or atleast give us real vc releases then i dont want half ass games. i want the full thing
first of all, this is there first time trying to emulate a gba on a system that doesn’t have a gba slot, not even any emulator on the ds can get that connection for gba games. Think of it, it would be pretty hard to change wired connection into wireless connection from a source gba game.
The GBA wired connection was just a simple serial link, it should be extremely EASY to emulate it over WiFi.
But if they can’t even keep the 3DS OS running (no way to go back to home screen, no StreetPass, no sleep, etc) then its pretty clear the emulator is a very poor piece of programming so no wonder they didn’t include multiplayer.
Nintendo = FAIL :(
When you say the final versions will include versus play, do you mean simultaneous play?
save function in a gba game they note, I like where this is going :)
It’s only natural that you should be allowed to save.
They’re kinda cheaping out on the Game Boy Advance titles, aren’t they? No sleep mode, no restore points. Bah.
this doesn’t make up for the price drop Nintendo…NO IT DOES NOT!
Well if you remember with the original DS and DSlite, when you played a game boy game and you closed the system, they wouldn’t go into sleep mode either. it’s the same thing here.
Yeah but this is all downloadable software now so I hope Nintendo enables this stuff in the future… the 3DS needs energy saving mechanics
And I hope they allow at least Streetpass if they update it so they allow Sleep Mode at least
If they were looking for an authentic experience you can still have it while utilizing the 3DS for it’s unique features.
Pretty sure this sounds a lot worse than it actually is….
But Sleep Mode would have been nice on the GBA titles… Nintendo knows the 3DS’s battery life isn’t great…
No StreetPass or SpotPass either? Really? I hope they fix those at least in future updates…
I honestly don’t care =D As long as I get my promise. 10 free nes games and 10 free gba =D I hope some Bs story doesn’t come up and it has to be delayed! If it is, I will be really pissed!
^This guy is smart
No multiplayer on the GBA games? Darn… Why would they give us Mario Kart, then?
Yeah Mario Kart got screwed so far.
So.. Nintendo. Where is the magic list?
I swear, some people on here are being greedy.sure, theres missing features, but were getting 20 free games! be glad were getting free games, this never happened before!
Games not having sleep mode is the biggest for me, but if the home screen works like the dsiware home screen menu, then maybe you can put it in sleep mode in the menu and not the game.
Nope, because it wouldn’t be any harder/easier to put it in the menu vs automatic when you close the lid. It just won’t have it, period.
@NeoTechni: actually, the psp only has 1 333mHz that runs at an underclocked speed of 222mhz. And while the gpu may be slightly better than the 3ds one, raw power isn’t necessarily indicative of good visuals. The psp is running on relatively old architecture, architecture that is less efficient and advanced than that of the 3ds. It breaks down to this: if you’ve got a 300MHz chip that is older, less efficient, and uses, say, 50MHz on just maintaining communicationw with the rest of its ecosystem. Then, arguably, a 280MHz chip that only uses 10MHz (due to better and newer architecture) is better. This is obviously very simplified, but it communicates the point. not to mention, if your info is right, the 3ds has 2 cores which totally blows the psp out of the water by your standards. That being said, the 3ds also has to cope with essentially rendering everything twice (for the 3d effect) thus, when it comes down to it, the 3ds and psp pretty much level out, with the 3ds at a slight lead.
Ok, I won’t mind if the GBA games didn’t have the VC Restore Points, but I’m sad that it can’t go to Sleep Mode.
David, nobody gives a shit about those. We just want to play games and Nintendo knows that.
Seriously Nintendo, I get that you are rushing in an attempt to placate early adopters, but screwing up functionality to achieve that seems an odd way of doing it.
I particularly like the “GBA games save when you have finished playing” and “GBA games do not suspend”.
For example you are playing a GBA game and constantly saving throughout. You need to pause for a while so forgetting the lack of suspend you close the lid.
You lost track of time and come back later to find not only the 3DS battery is dead but you lost your progress too as of course you didn’t exit the game so it never actually saved.
I can only hope Nintendo thought of this and it gracefully saves before turning off the 3DS due to low battery, but the fact they couldn’t even implement a basic save state function (come on, it just dumps the game RAM to a file or reloads it) leaves me concerned.
Its just so confusing as the things they are missing are the ones that should take the least time to implement. Did they not buy the GBA emulation from anyone and instead waste money reinventing the wheel?
And there really is NO excuse for turning off StreetPass. Its bad enough you lose it on DS games rather than letting you choose to disable WiFi support in the DS game in favour of keeping StreetPass running. (likely the reason its so hard to get StreetPass hits as many people with a 3DS would likely be playing DS games)
Very poor show Nintendo, especially as it implies you won’t be fixing the issues with the GBA titles in the future due to no plans to sell them on the store. Makes it far too obvious this is a desperate attempt to placate early adopters rather than a REAL apology.
this is a lil disappointing, i didnt really mind when i found out the DSiWare games i downloaded to my 3DS wouldnt support Streetpass since there not 3DS software in the first place, but i was pretty suprised when i got a Streetpass Notification while i was playin Links Awakening (which is a Virtual Console game). Now tht im hearin this, i am kind of wonderin y Nintendo didnt just give the Virtual Console GBA games tht function to…couldnt really be THAT hard…its the lil shyt like this tht sloooowly get me disappointed in Nintendo…
Damn. I was really hoping that they would be able to throw in wireless to substitute the game link cable on multi-player VC games. It should be possible. But what do I know? I’m not a game programmer.
Of course, Nintendo aims for “accuracy” while adding nothing else.
Don’t get me wrong, these are free, but at this point it feels like the rest should be too, considering the lack of features. Who’s gonna play pokemon without a linking function? Darn, lots of GBA titles had a sleep function.
Aside from the Sleep Mode thing, there are not really anything of this that bothers me that mutch.
This ambassador program is like being slapped in the face with a limp cock and paying $80 for it. No new features and just a dusty line up in general. I guess ill just keep playing my acecard on my 3ds, and play the gba games on my cycloDS. fuck you nintendo you burned your own bridge. I hope piracey rapes the 3ds… and it will.
Feels bad that my phone can do GBA Emulation better than my 3DS.
Care to explain please?
Anyway, you know what? Let me sum this up here: Feburary – August 2011: RIP 3DS. Not our fault Nintendo keeps making no one want you.
LOL u mad?
Cuz it looks like.
It will not be dead until Nintendo say so, idiot.
BITCHBITCHBTICH NO SAVE STATES BITCHBITCHBITCH NO MULTIPLAYER BITCHBITCHBITCH NO SLEEP MODE BITCHBITCHBITCH NO MULTIPLAYER
RAGE RAGE!
Sums up all the comments on this announcement.
“Wireless functions and peripheral devices are not supported.”
Does this means the multiplayer function will not work?

Ambassodors.
kinda defeats the whole free games if nintendo isnt even including save state feature.
everybody needs to calm the f*** down
who give a monkey @$$ witch handheld is better
at this point its like its all ppl care about is the system’ and whats the point of the system?
to play f***ing games!
some ppl dont get y others like nintendo products
well ill tell you y its not about the f***ing system its the games they like!
OK EVERYONE JUST SHUT UP
we all know that david hoyle think he knows so much about technology like soft modding and Wii (my 5year old cousin can do that) and we all know that hes a guy who plays COD 24/7 and calls it gaming so we all know that and we should shut up and let hoyle say that gaming is all about “hardcore gaming” (COD) even though its not. gaming is all games Nintendo Sony AND Microsoft
i only play cod sometimes. and i only play it for zombies. and from what i seen in the history channel, and even the “Eye-fi”, im pretty sure i know what im saying. if a SD card, a SD card, can wirelessly transfer photos, im sure the 3ds could of at view photos taken on a different camera. but yeah, 1 SD card can put pictures you take, on the computer, through the internet. without doing anything. and its not even that expensive. and i can do it anywhere theres internet. i can be in another state, the SD card still can upload images back to home.
btw i dont care about any video game company. i just know if im playing a game, i want to talk to them, tell them what to do if were on teams, all that stuff. maybe even make a new gaming friend.
ok first bro im sorry for being harsh.
and yes i get what your saying you want to play online and talk to people while you are playing online.
the only thing you dont understand is that the 3ds CAN do that.
on starfox 64 3ds coming out in september you can play online WHILE video chatting at the same time
there is also a kid icurus online mode where I THINK you can chat.
but the other big point is that 3ds has NO good games right now,
SO in other words you CANT judge the 3ds by just looking at its games RIGHT NOW,
developers are just getting used to the system and experimenting it but i give them to about next year after next the 3ds will have a BURST of good games THEN and only then can you judge the 3ds by its games
if you want to judge it now then actually TRY the system yourself
again im sorry for being so harsh. after all guyz ITS JUST A GAMING CONSLE
i dont know why you mentioned its a gaming console. yes, it is. a Expensive one. and peronally i dont know why they have to experiment with anything. its the same thing as a ds, and dsi. maybe if they would have used my idea about w, z, 1 and 2 buttons, but no. they only added a circle pad and some motion thing. also they are working on wii u games now, are they not? so they been working on 3ds games probably 2 years ago.
AGAIN its not a dsi its a whole new system why don’t you go and try a 3ds before posting random shit.
and the department that work on console games is a whole different department from the mobile games the 3ds is mobile and the wiiu is a console
i want pokemon sapphire remakes
if you close a DS (original) while playing gba games, it wouldnt sleep neither anyway. i think they use the emulator from the old ds for the ambassador games. just shut up and be happy for being given 20 free games instead of complaining about not being .most people would be happy, not start a fanboy war for getting free games. some people will just never be happy no matter how much they get
So, is it possible that the wireless feature for the GBA games will come to us through a 3DS update? I can’t imagine playing Mario Kart: SC alone.
Free games are free games. Don’t start a fanboy war.
Yay? O.o
guys when gba is released to everyone they will probably patch the games.
so shut up and be happy after all YOU decided to buy the system early and nintendo doesn’t owe you squat.
Just save your game and reboot the system then close it.
My only question is the screen res for the gba games
So we can’t save our data on the Game Boy advance games?! That would be fine on the nes games but for game boy advance titles, which can be very long games, this is kinda demoralizing. I’;m sure no one wants to keep replaying the begginning of a game, and also they would have to not stop playing the game for the players to be able to get at all far into the game.
wait never mind. i commented before reading ahead.
