The latest issue of Famitsu magazine in Japan has revealed that Etrian Odyssey IV, the next game in the dungeon crawler RPG series, is coming to the 3DS. It will feature job classes such as sword man, medic, and dancer, and there will also be a “Casual” difficulty level for those new to the series. The game will be released on the 5th of July, and the official website will launch within the week. For the time being though, you can click here to view a placeholder. There are scans for the game after the break.

  1. YES. FINALLY.

  2. holonboy

    Woohoo!
    Hope it gets localized.

    1. Even Rodea the Sky Soldier is getting localized.

And the 3DS has already sold over 20 million systems in less than a year.

Which is gonna really increase the chance of games getting localized.

And 99% percent of 3DS games come out up to 2 months after Nihon (Japan) gets them.

      MINT BERRY CRUNCH!

  3. Keith

I never played this series so if this gets localized I may check it out.

  4. I3rok3n_sword

This game has caught my eye. I hope that it gets localized.

    1. I3rok3n_sword

I just checked out the GameStop website and the last 3 games in this series were localized so this maybe getting the same treatment.

Cool beans. There’s a tiny little place in my heart for dungeon crawlers like this, and Etrian Odyssey is one of the best I’ve played.

  6. YAWN! This game will be boring as hell. I would rather watch paint dry than have to play this garbage. I will be able to count how copies this game sells with my fingers, even if seven are cut off. So yep, this a fail, give us news we care about.

    1. JOSHUA

Maybe there’s a new black ops game coming just for you since your mind is the size of a walnut? This game is going to be epic!

    2. Joshua, shut the fuck up. I’ll have you know I’ve never even played a Call of Duty game. I’m just saying, this game will totally blow. You know this too, so admit it.

    3. Gastrogenous

Dude, are you serious? You obviously haven’t played the other games on the series so on what basis are you making that claim?

    4. Sarah

Don’t worry Dawsum. Halo 4 is coming for people just like you :) Leave all other aspects of gaming to the rest of us mmkay :)

    5. Gunner

      Haters gunna Hate

    6. Wow! Stupid Nintendo fags! I hate almost all FPS games!

    7. And i’m gay!

    8. ReallyWut

It seems you got one thing right at least.

    9. Belinni

Guys, he’s just messing with you. It’s dumb to assume a series with already at least 4 sequels will do poorly.

Also ironically enough Black Ops 2 was leaked by Amazon. Hopefully by the name alone people will start to realize that it’s the same game over and over seeing as how Black Ops was the second worst CoD.

  7. Outlaw

    Meh…?

  8. Dragard

Oh hell yeah, more RPGs =D

  9. Kape

Always with the big *** trees, sheesh.

It’s about time, I’ve been waiting for some information about this to at least confirm it’s development since launch.

Here’s a few things I note right away:
-Foes are actually visualized outside of battles now instead of glowing orbs, with any luck they might actually move on their own now and chase as well.

-Enemies seem to be 3D models now instead of flat art, chances are they’re all animated now too.

-While the first game involved digging deeper, the second climbing higher, and the third crossing the sea. This one’s theme while still a mystery still has art of the Yggdrasil tree in the first image.

If you’re a beginner to the series, here’s an overview:
You immediately form a guild without a ton of reading or cutscenes of adventurers that you create/pick the classes and abilities of yourself. You venture into a dungeon that gets progressively more difficult every floor you progress. With bosses every so many floors, loot and an extreme difficulty curve. Skill upgrades are handled via a skill tree and two of the same class can generally go different routes. Pay attention to it as it gets closer to launch or pick up the older games for DS as it’s a really great series.

THIS GAME IS ONE OF THE MAIN REASONS I BOUGHT A 3DS.
IF IT DOESN’T COME TO EUROPE (like EO2 and 3, which I could IMPORT), I’M GONNA BE SO FUCKING PISSED. BRB WRITING ATLUS.

  12. Belinni

I’m starting to regret my purchase of the 3DS…

… because it was my first great decision in many years!

Also it’s extremely hard to save money for clothes that I can wear in college when so many good games come out so frequently.

  13. milkybee

I have been waiting for this game since the the day it was announced! I don’t usually like these types of games but Etrian odyssey I never put down!

  14. EpicLight*

    More RPG’s, the better

  15. Sean

I haven’t played any games in this series but people seem to like them a lot….

What is it about them that makes them so well liked? There doesn’t seem to be anything that stands out about them. (This isn’t me attacking the game, I’m just wondering what it is people like about it)

    1. ladydias

That’s a difficult question to answer. It’s old school in that it’s a first-person RPG with a skill system that you build on. It’s modeled after old pen-and-paper RPGs and you create your own guild and characters with a number of classes to choose from. However, one of the games biggest selling points is the game’s difficulty. Anyone expecting to pick the game up and get their hand held like many RPGs do is in trouble. The game starts off pretty hard and keeps getting harder. Sounds masochistic, I know, but there’s nothing like the having the satisfaction of beating any of the games’ Dragon bosses after dying…a lot.

Anyways, I’ve played all three of the Etrian games and this one is a day one buy for me. They are very fun and addctive and you get your money’s worth for sure. Hope this was helpful to you. Oh, and apparently there is a casual mode for those who never play, I have no interest in the new mode, but it’ll probably be a good way to get the hang of the game.

  16. ladydias

When the 3DS was first announced they said there was going to be an Etrian Odyssey game coming to it. I won’t lie, that’s a huge part of the reason why I bought mine. Crazy hard, first-person dungeon crawling with and awesome skill system? Sigh…memories. Day one buy for me. XD

    1. Adam

Ya! Can’t find these types of RPGs anymore. I was hoping that they put out some with the apple and andriod, but it doesn’t seem to be the case.

  17. Adam

Yess, played it on the Ds. I’ll play this one too if it gets localized

  18. person

How about they show some of the male characters. I’m not a lesbian, damn it. lol

  19. VersaChaos

old news. It actually includes a remake or port of the last game too.

  20. Ygor323

    OMG!! OMG!! OMG!!! OMG!!!
