Ubisoft has a lot of dodgy ports on the 3DS during the launch, and there’s plenty of frame-rate issues to go around, but they’re still adamant to praise the power of the 3DS:
> The 3DS is powerful, and we are able to run the Unreal engine on this console, which is pretty impressive for a handheld machine, and the 3D doesn’t affect the performance (thanks to my amazing programmers). The architecture is different compared to a Wii or some other platforms that we had to work with here at Ubisoft Montreal.
Originally, I figured this disproved the theory of Mark Rein from Epic Games who said the 3DS couldn’t handle Unreal Engine. But according to KevBot (one of our many readers who are probably more well-equipped for running this blog than I am), this is just a bit of confusion based on the different versions of Unreal. Ubisoft is using 2.5, apparently, while Rein was referencing Unreal Engine 3.
Sorry, David.
The Ubisoft titles use Unreal 2.5
Epic said the 3DS can’t run Unreal Engine 3.0
So, no Epic wasn’t wrong. Ubisoft said they have “Unreal” running, not UE3.
Nicely pointed out. I forgot all about the version differences, myself…and here I was excited.
Bummer. Thanks for the clarification. Updated the post. Oh well, the momentary arrogance felt good.
yeah, i got all excited when I saw this lol I thought, “HELL YEAH!! Can you say bomberman 3DS is 3D running 60 fps” thanks for clarification.
David you are still right! According to what I have read, epic games had claimed the 3ds isn’t powerful enough to run unreal engine period. This is not the case if it’s any consolation keep in mind that both bioshocks one and two use unreal engine 2.5. It’s in developer hands now!; )
You are wrong,Ubisoft does use UNREAL 3!!!Brothers in Arms: Hell’s Highway,EndWar and the 2 Rainbow six Vegas games are all using Unreal 3.
@sa66o6 We are Talking about TITTLES FOR THE 3DS NOT OTHER CONSOLS
I know someone named KevBot… Odd name to have in common.
@sa6606 Yes, UbiSoft uses Unreal 3, but the 3DS is only powerful enough for 2.5, way to unsmart.
TinyCartridge post about the 3DS! Fishing easter eggs: http://tinycartridge.com/post/4023917625/hidden-easter-eggs-in-the-3dss-ar-fishing#disqus_thread

It’s still impressive that the 3DS can run Unreal 2.5. Several 360 / PS3 games still use that engine and look fantastic (Splinter Cell Conviction, Duke Nukem Forever, etc.).
Hopefully Ubisoft can make good use of the engine in future titles. They’re notorious for churning out bad launch titles (Red Steel, anyone?) but can do amazing things once they become familiar with a console – Just look at Red Steel 2.
Im done with graphics issues and stuff…just came from reading a review of 3ds against ngp (wich isnt eve available yet) and they all praised ngp graphics, hd, 3g, etc…sony fanboy page i guess…it all comes to this:
Sony fan boys arguments are: graphics and hd
Nintendo fan boy arguments are: innovation and creativity…make your choice!
Bioshock runs in Unreal 2.5
MY BODY IS READY
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bioshock
“BioShock uses Unreal Engine 3 as base technology. [5] In previous titles (including SWAT 4 and SWAT 4: The Stetchkov Syndicate) Irrational Games used their own engine which had its base in the Unreal Engine 2.5.”
Bioshock runs in Unreal Engine 3…
Why cant Epc use the 2.5 engne for the 3ds then?
3 is not gonna work but 2 wil run fine.
Bioshock 2 also runs on unreal engine 2.5.
Thanks for the shout out David. Believe me, I had a gaming blog of my own, and while I receive some mild recognition, it never got to the level you have this blog at.
Keep up the good work David, I love the site and I am anxious to see how it evolves.
Welp, 2.5 isn’t that bad.
Aren’t games like Killing Floor and Red Steel using that?
Ah, and I’m fairly sure Chaos Theory 3D uses that. Since it has elements of Splinter Cell Conviction, which was made on UE2.5
then i hope they will make Splinter Cell : Conviction 3D or no 3D for better graphics WOOO!!!
Actually a couple if years ago Epic made a comment about how one of their licences was trying to get unreal 3 up and running on the wii, and later singled out ubisoft as the ‘culprits’.
Moreover, when epic said unreal 3 ‘couldn’t’ run on 3ds, they were of course talking out their ass at the time (standard practice for them). They hadn’t touched the device at the time and were making a comment in relation to the machine’s still rumoured functions. Basically they heard “fixed function” anything and went out of their way to publically comment “screw that”, regardless of whether fixed function conversions of their sharer effects is workable or not. Frankly resident evil is already running more or less all the major modern effects, empirically marking them out quantifiably as either lazy or biased.
if anyone is talking out of their ass its you
its in epics best financial interest not to lie
you on the other hand, are just a fanboy who has just as much experience with unreal as you claimed epic has with 3ds
though epic only needs the spec list to know if their engine can run on hardware, 3ds’s paltry 96mb of ram was probably enough to tell them it wouldnt run it
That doesn’t negate the fact they were able to run Unreal Engine on the iPhone with 20MB of RAM. The iPhone has 512 MB, but Apple hinders usage of RAM to 20 so the OS doesn’t crash, multitasking, and other stability issues. 96 MB is more than enough for Unreal Engine.
They literally said, we haven’t seen the device yet but we’re pretty sure it won’t run. I have enough experience with Unreal (at least 5 games) to know its limits and specifications. Unreal released the engine they used on the iPod and the 3DS meets and goes beyond the specifications they required. If Epic actually cared they’d make a Nintendo 3DS game; however, it’s in their best “financial interest” to stick with Gears of War right now, as it’s receiving a lot of attention and Microsoft is paying them. If they developed for the 3DS they might do well, but not nearly as well as they would on, say, the 360.

Ubisoft Montreal? Sounds like Asscreed to me.
Assassin’s Creed? That’s one of the best games of this generation. Better than that cr@p Call of Duty. It’s like an HD Zelda coupled with Infamous’s climbing techniques and a spy-like flair. Awesomeness, in video game form.
@abujaffer
Woah, woah, woah, Assassins creed is good, but nothing in comparison to Zelda.
@ScaledDown and @abujaffer: before anyone gets pissed of, Zelda and Assassins creed are not the same. Assassin’s creed focuses on “parkour” and fighting, while Zelda usually focuses on using items and solving puzzles. Although they have several similarities both games are great and should not be compared in an “this is better than that” fashion.
I guess the next question now is: how popular is Unreal 2.5 with developers?
As long as it runs the same engine as Batman: Arkham Asylum I’m good. [derp]
Not much more I can say.
Hey guys, of course Ubisoft has games that use UE3. But not for the 3DS. Like how Red Steel 1 is UE 2.5 running on the Wii. And while some terrific looking games use UE 2.5 ( like bioshock) the question isn’t about whether the 3DS can run Unreal. Epic said it can’t run UE3. Ubisoft’s 3DS titles use UE 2.5. So both Epic and Ubisoft are correct. Ubisoft is simply saying the 3DS can run Unreal period.
@sa66o6
We are Talking about TITTLES FOR THE 3DS NOT OTHER CONSOLS
sooo, unreal 2.5 is really old or something? ill look it up
@sa6606
Yes, UbiSoft uses Unreal 3, but the 3DS is only powerful enough for 2.5, way to unsmart.
[...] Engine DOES work on 3DS. We are able to run Unreal Engine on the Nintendo 3DS, says Ubisoft I guess you guys were right about Unreal [...]
Well, Bioshock 1 was made on UE 2.5 ;3
Will this make Crytek mad?
Crytek already said seeing the spec sheet, CryEngine will probably run on the 3DS (unless there’s some unseen technical issues).
you know not much as changed to the unreal engine 2 and 3.
Hey Unreal 2.5 is still WIN!
So this is cool.
so is this good news?
Wow, this is great news. Unreal is amazing software, and the development kit is free to anyone. Running Unreal on a 3DS sonds like a great idea, and I hope to hear more.
why cant epic games use unreal 2.5?
Wait…Unreal Development Kit is available to anybody as a free download. So, does that mean there is a possibility of complete custom games put on the 3DS via an SD card? I don’t know about you guys, but I would love to be able to play a game that I made myself on a system in 3D.
I hope Ubisoft uses the Unreal Engine 3 for Assassin’s Creed: Lost Legacy 3D!
I will definitely buy the 3DS if Ubisoft will start using the Unreal Engine 3.
