EDGE and Nintendo Power love Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D

Metal Gears Solid: Snake Eater 3D didn’t impress me a whole lot when I played it at E3. Even so, the reviews from EDGE and Nintendo Power are very positive, perhaps making it more worthy of attention that I thought.

EDGE rated the game with a 8/10 and said the following:

Packed with detail, both in terms of it’s environments and mechanics, this is a game that pays back investment in spades. MGS3 is a moden classic – the tighest, smartest and most emotional journey in the series – and even the HD update doesn’t look as good as this portable treatment.

Nintendo Power rated the game with a 9/10 and said the following:

A phenomenal game. Almost nothing was sacrificed in bringing the title to the Nintendo 3DS; from the opening scene to the powerful ending, every character model and every bit of excellent voice acting is intact, and the production values are sky-high.

    Metal Gear games are so strange, that I can’t resist them. They’re fun and well made, but it is their sense of humor that I find most compelling. I’m not surprised to see such positive reviews for this remake. Kojima is an artist. His Metal Gear games are without equal. I never played the original Snake Eater. I have been looking forward to finally playing this installment since it was announced for the 3DS.

      Bullshit, I just played the demo, it looks so pixelated on 3ds. The pixels sparkle like stars, worse than the PS2. Konami didn’t invest as much energy on this game as Capcom with RE:revelation.

      Anyway, MGS games are dated, it used to be fun but that was years ago. Kojima is beating a dead snake here, why they even bother with this lazy port? The 3d gave me headache in this game. The world has moved on, its now COD not MGS anymore.

      For me it’s the other way around, I felt Resident Evil was too hyped which gave me high expectations.

    The demo actually made me want this game over resident evil. I spent hours just shooting animals for rations, sneaking behind guards, and exploring the area just on the demo.

      My first time through the demo was a disaster as I haven’t played a MGS game since I was 9 (I’m 18 now, btw). My second time around I took it slow, learned how everything worked and interrogated/murdered everyone just for the lulz.

      Question though, do enemies spawn infinitely or can I go around slicing jugulars till the area is deserted?

      Yeah, the only reason enemies will respawn is if you alert the ones already there.

    I was impressed enough with the demo. Definitely going to pick this one up.

    Interesting, maybe they did smooth out the frame rates some. That was the biggest issue for me in the demo, but apart from that, I found it a pretty good demo. Even the controls w/o the CPP work well after a little time.

      It has been confirmed by another review that the frame-rate issue is in the final product as well.

    The intro to the demo was really laggy:S The frames were surprisingly low! 3D on and off.

    Even the gameplay seems like the frames are stagger around 30 but not always 30:S

    I honestly expected more from Kojima studios. I was waiting for this game since the 3DS launched!

    I might stick with RE and the HD collection.

    I’m honestly very disappointed! :(

    I’m still going to buy it, but whether I’ll play it or not I just enjoy it more with 60 fps ….frankly even a steady 30 (HD Collection)

      The demo is really old- just like the Resident Evil demo was. Both demos are from early builds of the game and were played by the press months ago. A lot of the issues were probably fixed- I noticed a lot of differences between the full and demo versions of RE. Still not sure if I’ll get it or not- already have the HD Collection, and kind of want to get it for the Vita too. This does have much better graphics and controls though

      I dunno, there is definitely more foliage, but the character models are washed out.

      I still think the HD Version is not only a better value but also better quality graphics at faster frames!

      Still i want to see what they implemented into this1.

      The HD collection has 60fps and better controls. Personally, the demo on 3DS didn’t impress me. When you aim in first person, the game switches into 2D mode which makes the 3D gimmick less worthwhile.

      For me it doesn’t matter if I switch between 3D or 2D in cut scene. It still lags the same.

      Gameplay though is just overall awkward and very none organic compared to HD Collection.

      Again, we have to wait for retail release.

      But I’ll tell you right now, if it’s like the demo, EDGE is full of Sh*t!

    I thought that the game felt clunky without the Circle Pad Pro, but the 3D looks great and I’ll probably eventually get it when there’s a price drop.

    im sure this going to be a great game!

    but when playing the demo, i found i was terrible at the controlling snake. the buttions where used to look up and down…..just like the original pc game “doom”!

    If the game works with the duel extra thing, then i think it might be more playable!

    How can I love this game with how chuggy the frames were in the demo? I really want to like this game, but with how amazing the RE demo was, I can’t put my money one the lesser shooter.

      I don’t understand why so many people are complaining about the demo, it was working fine for me. The framerate was smooth and the gameplay is what you’d expect from a half-remake of a well aged game.

      Either my 3DS is magical or there are some shenanigans going on with downloadable demos.

    Got the demo and really like it. It reminds me of peace walker (mainly because I didn’t used that foolish CPP) Still think the game is pointless though due to that MGS collection coming to vita.

    This is the part where I get bashed for not dedicating myself (lol?) to one system.

      It’s not really pointless for a MGS game to come out on a Nintendo console. It’s pretty rare when it happens but there is always something that sets it apart from the original/ports.

      It’s like Tales of the Abyss, some people haven’t played the game because they don’t have a PS2. The 3DS is their best option at playing these great games they never got a chance to experience because the games have never been on a Nintendo console before.

      and yeah, the odds of some people ONLY buying consoles from Nintendo are higher than the other two companies. Why? I dunno.

      Personally, I think playing the HD collection on the 360/PS3 is the way to go, but getting it on the Vita is great if you absolutely have to have this portable.

      @Belinni: But the main reason for this game is portability right? If they really wanted to play the games they could just get a PS2 and the game and probably for less than the 3DS version.

      If it’s portability you want it makes more sense to get the MGS collection as you’d get 3 games for like… However much it sells for xD (vita games don’t have a proper pricing system but the most expensive I’ve seen is $50)

      @TheEclipse: Agreed I’d rather play them on console.

      @JacknZack: “make more sense” That makes… No sense to me. I don’t see how it’d make more sense to try to fit 3 games on a 3DS if they can barely fit one.

    The 3DS version looks nice but it doesn’t look as nice as the HD remake.

      Keep in mind: you haven’t seen the final build. I wouldn’t be surprised if the released game has flawed graphics similar to the demo (not at all), but I wouldn’t judge it juuust yet.

      The 3DS has slightly better looking models, but the difference is so little that they don’t make up for the compromised framerate, controls and resolution.

      MGS isn’t a shooter, it’s a stealth game. COD has a totally different point. Approaching MGS with a COD mindset would essentially guarantee boredom.

    i played the demo and it really was bad. not to be rude or anything, but even with no 3d on the frame rate is noticeably slow and the controls were bad. either that, or i played too much metroid prime hunters in my life. but still, in the demo the alligators doesnt even come after you.

      yea! I totally agree with you man – the controls are awful and the AI appears very stupid – I crawled right in front on the enemy and he didn’t even notice me, and the alligators have suddenly snapped while i was like 1 meter away and killed me, almost like a glitch or something, either way I don’t know if im getting this game anymore – that demo has really put me off, and I was a big fan of this game

    If they said this then it must be nothing like the demo, because THAT was rather crappy. The FPS are low even with the 3D turned off, and the graphics aren’t exactly a marvel.

    I think I’ll buy the HD remake first, since I haven’t played MGS2 yet, and if I really like it I’ll buy it for 3DS as well.

    Well, I honestly don’t care for frame rates and all that stuff. I demo was fun I’ve played it a ton of times. I also found the controls to work, and not to awkward to use :)

    I don’t know if I’m getting it. After playing the demo I found the controls reallyyyy complicated to work with, especially when aiming – it was nearly impossible to aim and shoot while in alert mode. I played it over and over again and it just didn’t get any better/easier. However maybe the extra circle pad will help – but I don’t want to spend more money!!

    The only thing I didn’t like about the demo is that its hard to hear meaning that it has low audio but besides that the game looks great.

    dave stop thinking your opinion is our opinion.i personally, along with many others i’m sure, were stoked about this game from the start. it has always been worthy of attention regardless of whether you yourself enjoy the series.

    I have CPP and not impressed.. not bagging the game.. it’s not my cup of tea… but some of the controls and execution are pretty bad in this game…. I found RE:R with the CPP to take sometime to get used to.. but this game.. not for me..
