I imagine some people will use *Nintendo 3DS Sound* as their MP3 player when they’re out and about. If that’s the case then you’ll be happy to know that you can use the buttons found on some pairs of headphones (like the latest Apple ear buds) to switch tracks and pause (and then un-pause) your music. Not a huge feature, but a nice addition nevertheless. Check out the video confirming this after the break.

  1. This will be extremely helpful; however, I’d better pick up better headphones. My Apple headphones aren’t very sturdy and I’ve had to replace them already, as the wiring is extremely delicate.

    1. Toko

But you should really use in-ear headphones. In any other case you loose so much sound to your sourrounding that it sounds like crap ;), Use your 3DS right with good headphones :).

  2. leo986

this is very helpful, trick people into thinking you have an ipod (so they don’t steal your 3ds).

    1. asapisaiah

I think people would rather steal an iPod than a 3DS anyway.

    2. Christeezy

I second that, although 3DS is definitly worth stealing.

    3. Bartek Sitek

      Haha, nice one!

  3. erickgm15

is the sound loud in the headphones? i remember the dsi xl had cazy loud speakers but low headphone volume.. and awesome theres no “1st” comment xD

    1. t depends on the headphone. Some headphones have much higher volume. If you want high-quality headphones, I recommend AstroGaming (astrogaming.com). However, it’s kind of overkill for the 3DS, so I’d recommend some Sony and/or headphones with Surround Sound. You can find good quality headphones with great volume for about $75 bucks, with some as low as $50 or $100.

    2. E.L.

@abujaffer ….WHERE do you BUY your headphones?!?!….I’ve never seen (Or heard of, for that matter) headphones costing more than $35…

    3. I don’t buy them; ASTROGaming headsets are the highest quality gaming sound systems available, is all. And there are some truly epic headsets for $300. But those are for musicians, people that need to hear those elusive footsteps in CoD, or simply a guy with cash to burn. I don’t spend nearly that much; $5 is considered too much for a normal headset. If it’s something exceptional I might pay more; but for now I’d rather save up as much money as possible. That car won’t pay for itself (if I ever get a job that is…).

    4. David Cecil

A truly good pair of headphones are going to start around $100. Mine were $300 and worth every penny. You can’t underestimate the power of a good set of headphones. Though, I don’t use them for gaming so much as just listening to music and, occasionally, movies.

    5. McCool

@David Cecil All those pennies could’ve been for your 3DS lol

  4. sammaster9

This would be really cool, but the music doesn’t play when the 3ds is closed, which means you can’t really listen to it normally… i dont want to walk around with my 3ds open in my pocket and listen to music.

    1. Deecast96

Actually you can listen to your music with the 3DS (or which i have heard) :D

    2. Deecast96

      *with the 3DS closed

    3. Where did u hear that?

    4. cobanermani456

It can. It does everything the old dsi music player did and you could close the dsi while listening to music through headphones

    5. SparktehFox

You can either close it after plugging in headphones or use a magnet to wake it up when it’s closed, either way it can play closed.

    6. tipsd9video

You can listen to it closed if there’s headphones in, but not when there’s no headphones in.

    7. Well… You could with the DSi… It would be dumb if you couldnĀ“ t with the 3DS… D:

    8. Joshua

As everyone else said you can listen to the 3DS closed with headphones in. Also, I believe you can switch the tracks with the shoulder buttons but i’m not sure.

    9. mike

      yes it can you idiot

    10. E.L.

      @mike That’s uncalled for…

  5. ceribee

    another gadget for the 3ds

  6. CamCam281

Also the headphone jack is in a position on the device that makes it hard to plug in headphones and put it in your pocket….. Something to think about when deciding If you really need headphones…… They do look very similar to the apple ones though!

  7. b2j135

    link to purchase pl0x?

  8. Han Solo

The PSP headphones had something like that, but much bigger. I used my DSi for music until I got a Blackberry. I don’t see myself using my 3DS as a music player because of my phone. Also, those headphones are crap besides the volume control.

    1. TheDeadHero

Yeah, the old PSP 1000 had an entire wired remote. Although it won’t work, though, as it used a proprietary connector. I’m not too sure about the newer models, though.

  9. An interesting concept, but I’d rather wait until someone comes up with the same concept for an audio jack. I’d rather use my own headphones; you might call me Kruai.mp3 though.

  10. DesignerNate

Do you know if you can use that same apple headset for mic input? I know the DS series used to have a seperate slot next to the headphones where you could by the Nintendo DS headset to work as such but does this mean the 3DS is going the smart way and simply incorperating it in the same 3.5mm jack like apple does? (crosses fingers)

  11. So…
Does the external mic of the Apple Headset work?

  12. james braselton

hi there your right but apple dose not have a browser king koopa as anti-thieft device the bad criminals do not have code king koopa jumps out of the screen and fry the crimanals just like e-3 video demo were king koppa frys the bad people

  13. R-Bit64

THAT’S why they got rid of the nintendo ds headset connector because the 3ds can handle 3 ring headphones (like the apple headset with buttons). This means that you could probably use the microphone on the earphones!

  14. Too bad my skull candy ones don’t have one of those control things.

  15. ObsoleteInfinity

Does this work in-game or in any other application?

  16. TheDeadHero

Good to hear my Microsoft Kin headphones will work with it, then. Definitely a very nice, if only minor, feature.

  17. Oh, that’s cool. Very handy.

  18. Yulaw

    Sweeeeet.

  19. Jivansuperdude

I wonder how people play the 3ds left handed…

    1. james_bond0014

lol the same way you do untill a mirror version comes outprays and gets ready for dissapoitnment

  20. magikarp

@E.L. Headphones over $35 are everywhere. In fact, mine cost 100-200$

    1. james_bond0014

dr.dre head phones cost from 80 to 300 $ but your an awesome dude if you buy just because of a name i find bosse to be better but the beats look cool :l either way indont spend more than 20 $ on headphones its madness

    2. Coldkick

Bose is a name, Monster is a name. Here is my take. Get Sennheiser. Sennheiser is brilliant. If you can afford them aim for Sennheiser HD555. Monster is too bass heavy and Bose just uses a Bose system sound, which is mediocre unless used with all Bose certified equipment.

    3. Perfection

Personally, I think spending that much on a pair of headphones is just dumb. But to all thier own, I guess.

  21. Wootah

    About time…
My DSi doesn’t work with my HTC in-ear’s remote control :(
