DQM is pretty much what I like to refer to as “Pokemon’s bastard cousin.” Not as many people know about it, but that doesn’t mean no one loves it. The battle system is very much Dragon Quest, but the monster aspect makes is have hints of Pokemon, if only in the aspect of catching, raising, and breeding the critters. In the original and Joker series (and I assume probably for this one, too), you didn’t usually control the monsters directly (there is an option for exact commands, but there were some battle modes you couldn’t use it in, such as tourneys); instead, they’d pick attacks and spells based on what fighting mode you have them in (such as aggressive, conserve MP, that sort of thing). I don’t recall this in the Joker series, but I remember in the original (what this game is based on), what moves your monsters would use would depend upon their personalities. There were even books you could buy in-game to make really aggressive mons more tame and vice-versa. There are many aspects of the DQM series that are much more in-depth than Pokemon, especially when you compare, say, the first GB DQM game to Pokemon Red and Blue.

Pick up Dragon Quest IX for the DS while you wait! You won’t be disappointed!
