A firmware update for the 3DS is coming soon

The latest Nintendo Direct event in Japan has brought us some new details on an upcoming firmware update for the 3DS. The new features that will be added to the 3DS include:

  • The ability to organize you home menu using a folder system. Each folder can hold up to 60 items and can be given a custom name.
  • The ability to patch games. Games that will be patched include Mario Kart 7 and Kingdom Hearts 3D.

Nintendo of America has confirmed that the update will be hitting the 3DS in North America on April 25th. There’s currently no date set for other regions, but it shouldn’t be too long before we hear something about it.

      So that’s what it is.

      ^I believe they were talking about fixing it in new copies of the game. Now that they’re sending out an update that allows patching, they can fix it in all copies.

      You download the patch from the e-shop, and apparently you wont be able to play online again until you get the patch. You can still play the game’s none online features though without patching it…You just wont be able to play online modes without the patch. Ba-bang.

      They did that on smash bros mellee, when you zoom in close enough in the right angle on Daisy, you see a third eye. :D

      It still sucks thought that not everyone will download the patch, unless Nintendo can force every owner to download, I doubt this problem will be gone. I’m downloading the patch thought and I’m so excited that Nintendo put the effort to fix it.

      You must not have downloaded a patch for an online game before. If one person gets the patch but others don’t, it would give an unfair advantage to those without the patch. There would be no point.

      A patch for online aspects of a game is pretty much ALWAYS required to continue playing online. Everybody will be forced to have the patch, its not something you can opt-out of.

    mk7 patch is good but remember guys. the 3DS update is dated for us on the 25th. no other countries have been announced yet which means everyone outside of japan or america can use the Glitch at WUHU.

    Way to steal from the PSVita Nintendo! :v No but seriously, it’s great that I can organize into folder now, even with all my games alphabetized (3×5 panels), 45-someodd apps and games is a little much too scroll through.

      lol as if folders didn’t exist on computers/electronics since before Windows 95. It wasn’t stolen, it was realizied. There’s nothing wrong with realizing what’s there and what works, and implementing it. That’s how you improve. Patents and copyrights make it harder to improve, if everyone had the same things, new things would need to be created to make your products shine, patents and copyrights mess this up.

      I’ve got them organized, in a 3×5 grid, in order of: Game Card, Zelda eShop games, Mario eShop games, 3D Classics, Metroid eShop games, Kirby eShop games, standalone eShop games, standalone VC games and standalone DSiWare games, applications and finally demos. I have a LOT of games.

    This sounds awesome, it’s needed as well and I’m glad they’ve thought of it.

    Something else I want in the future is:
    - The option to set a photo you’ve downloaded, or taken, as the background on the HOME screen (possibly blurred to rid any pixelation, acting as a skin around the interfact). That would be awesome too!

    Am I the only person thinking about an update for ALL Street Fighter IV to disable the touch screen or set to Only Pro Controls. Cause it’s annoying seeing a B+ player only to see them do Hadokens, Shorukens, Sonic Booms, Flash Kick even just E.Honda ALL THE TIME. They made a good game that was so very broken. I just want to have a fair fight online!

    THANK GOD for that first point. My list was getting RIDICULOUSLY long between all the eShop titles (and most especially the ambassador games to which there are many). It was just getting increasingly unmanageable so this should correct it.

    In terms of patching, that’s nice and all but I really hope developers don’t start with that mentality again of “we’ll fix it later” that console and PC gamers alike have to deal with.

    Finally, folders. I always like to keep my games/apps organized. Like 3DS videos go here, 3DSWare goes in this group, Demos in another, DSiWare goes over there, and pre-installed stuff goes in another group. With folders I can finally download new things without going through the hassle of moving everything.

    I’m OCD and like to organize everything. Imagine my pain when I download a 3DSWare and have to drag it through all of the VCs (GB, GBC, GBA, GG and NES) titles just to reach the 3DSWare section.

    Folders for my Ambassador games, 3D classics, and 3DS ware.
    Plus patches for games (no more Maka Wuhu cheat yay)!
    The patching system will be useful for Kingdom Hearts 3D, since there is a game breaking bug that prevents you from progressing through the game any further.
